I've enjoyed the SW franchise since the first movie came out when I was in junior high; but, with Jar Jar Abrams involved I think I'm going to sit the new ones out.

Seems like Jar Jar Lucas didn't do all that well when he got back to them not too long ago.

I could see passing on it in the theater, but would be puzzled if you refused to rent/stream the new episode. You be gambling as low as $3.99 on something that could be very good. I owe it to myself to take a chance, and as I like JJ's treatment of Star Trek, it's a go! :)

Abrams "reboot" of Star Trek was utter tripe. It relied on the gimmicks of gratuitous violence and special effects; Star Trek has always been about the story (this coming from someone who watched the original series when it was first broadcast).

Not sure you can say much about story or anything like that about the last couple of movies before the reboot.

Maybe it's just me but it seems like Hollywood forgot about space after nasa scaled back manned missions. I'm so desperate for space anything these days, I'd sit through Gravity once.

Fun story...

When the 4th movie (EP1) came out I was with a top digital projection shop. We got hired to do the first digital projection of a movie (EP1) in a theater. HDD were still small and video big, so the RAID tower to hold it was the size and weight of a filing cabinet! Didn't get to play it in the in house theater but everyone did get treated to a private showing later on.

Seems like there have been a good few space movies recently, like Gravity that you mentioned, Interstellar, The Martian, some deeper Sci Fi ones like Promethius. Perhaps not as saturated as some other years have been, but some good ones have been out recently.

I did too. I guess we just differ on what we find entertaining and what we characterize as gratuitous violence and special effects. There was a story, IMO a good story that held my interest for both of the reboot movies.

Considering that all of the Star Trek films until JJ were somewhere between dissapointment and crap, there was only one way to go. IMO it's also hard to make a level comparison with a format where a story with one or two subplots, is told in 43 min as compared to 2-3 hrs. The earlier Star Trek films felt uneven, starting with a bang, then dragged, until the climax. Star Trek and Next Generation the only two worthy installments (IMO) and as serialized TV shows had the luxury of exploring all kinds of themes some low key and others exciting action. Unfortunately with the commitment of a movie, more likely than not for Star Trek, we will get big screen action.

Looks good. Let's see if Rey, Finn, and Kylo Ren can carry this movie. My excitement hasn't hit hyper drive yet but that's because it is still two months away. I like Carrie Fisher's regal hairdo in that poster. No Luke but I would rather see his twin sister as I miss her spunk. I can wait to see more of Luke in the next episode.

Mark Hamill has aged the worst among the trio. Unfortunately, he started to look worse than Harrison and Carrie in Empire after that car accident. Harrison still has got his charisma according to Anthony Daniels. Carrie with her personal problems like alcoholism and being bipolar still has her sense of humor and just needed to lose weight. She still has an attractive face for her age.

Maybe once I see the trailer tomorrow will I start to get a little more excited...

If you really consider Wrath Of Khan, Voyage Home, and First Contact to be "somewhere between dissapointment and crap", then I'm not surprised you welcomed the reboots.

Prime vs prime, I find Natalie Portman more attractive than Carrie Fisher. But Nat only beats Carrie in a general superficial level. For a peer who graduated Harvard, I find Portman to be a total ditz as Padmé and as Jane in Thor.

Leia destroys her mother as the superior female character in SW. I want to see Carrie b|t<h slapping other characters, cracking one-liners like the real Carrie does, and finally see Leia using those telekinesis powers she was born with. I miss those lines like "General Tarkin. I should have expected you holding Vader's leash. I recognized your foul stench when you were brought on board." And "Can you get this walking carpet out of my way?" Leia was the most sassy in A New Hope. She was never that spunky or cute with those cinnamon bun hairdo since Ep 4 even with that gold bikini in Ep 6.

*Rumor alert*

Ok, I probably expect a flashback sequence. But Kylo Ren (not his real name) could be Han and Leia's son? So basically a Vader fanboy who isn't fully developed when we see him and is like Anakin in Episode III not sure which side to take? Rey is the female Luke in the story while the new Obi-Wan is Luke who is MIA until the very end. Luke is the one who decides to train Rey since he saw the darkside of Kylo Ren at an early age? I saw the rumor where we see Luke's hand in outer space after the opening crawl and how he could be killed off in this trilogy. Some of these leaks and many theories will probably be true like the latest iPhone rumors.

For generally a Luke-less episode, I am still lukewarm about it until I see the trailer. That, and I still didn't enjoy Star Trek (2009) very much after seeing its amazing trailer. And that Star Trek is the higher regarded JJ one. A Star Wars OT rehashed story with a dab of PT (Ep 3) but using different characters and names like the Starkiller base to replace the Death Star. I still have 8/10 anticipation for it. But I will still pay to watch in the theater maybe multiple times like I did with the PT just to see Harrison and Carrie again. Nostalgic reasons on a much higher emotional level than watching the real Arnold in Terminator: Genisys after 24 years and Harrison and Karen Allen reunite in Indiana Jones 4.

Revenge of the Sith is still my all-time fav SW but at least this SW ST won't have cheesy delivery like "From my perspective, the Jedi are evil!" and "Hold me like you did by the lake in Naboo." Glad to see you back, Han and Leia. Even if those rumors could be true that they probably reproduced another Anakin Skywalker who probably goes Luke (good) and becomes the secret hero at the end. Watching Harrison and Carrie together is like watching our parents up there for one final curtain call...

I always held the Star Trek movies, when the actors come directly from the related TV show, up to the TV show, and I found none of those movies to be as satisfying as the TV version.

I've said this in previous discussions, these movies always felt like a poorly written version of the show which a bunch of filler added to plump it out to 2hrs, although I'll concede, Wrath of Khan was decent, but I did not like Ricardo Montalban as Khan. I've found I can disconnect the TV shows from Abram's movies movies which have both been entertaining (for me). Benedict Cumberbatch plays a most excellent Khan. He has a significant on-screen presence. :):)

I love Jane in Thor. Portman had a real on-screen presence. She was in the zone. I disliked her in Star Wars but I blame the Director and writers. An actor can only do so much. ;) But it could be during V For Vendetta and Thor she has found herself.

I did not know, just wondered why he had aged so poorly... For anyone not familiar, see the personal life section of this link: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mark_Hamill

Looking forward to it, and I'm going to see it of course. Heck, I'll probably watch the other movies again just for kicks before I do...but I don't quite get the hype train surrounding this.

I'll catch it a day or two after release in the morning at a quiet cinema. Like an old person :p

Good thing my enthusiasm has been poured into other things because this trailer that just hit is not doing a thing for me. I still don't like Rey (nothing to with Daisy Ridley; the character just does not appeal to me), but that's where Finn, Poe, BB-8 and Captain Phasma come in. Definitely not taking off for opening day now and I'll wait a bit to see it (probably Christmas week or thereafter.)

I still have a slight glimmer of hope that the film will make me feel like I am back in the Star Wars universe (and the dog fight in the trailer gave me a little tingle); but I suspect I'll get the Star Wars fix I want with Rogue One. And if that happens, I will be 100% fine with that.

Think of it as the hype for every Assassins Creed game that comes out. Even the bad ones like Unity do well.

It's like that, but 1000x the people care.

I can appreciate that. The franchise has enough goodwill that fans are willing to give this one a shot despite the last trilogy not living up to the originals.

Advance tickets for SWVII go on sale tonight.
The post-10pm launch apparently briefly crashed both Fandango and MovieTickets.com. Most of the tickets for IMAX screenings on opening night are practically sold out already. I'd say Avatar better get ready to hand over the box office crown by early in 2016.

I think you might consider revising your videogame/movie sales ratio somewhat. For example, Grand Theft Auto V grossed $1 billion in just 3 days. It's a whole new world in the entertainment market.
