My thoughts exactly and one reason I am really excited to see this!!!

I'm almost definite that relying on good old practical effects is the major reason why the new Mad Max turned out as awesome as it did. I'm not against CG at all, but I think movies have become over reliant on it over the last decade and a half. At its worst, it makes it feel like there's a disconnect between the actors, and the action you're seeing onscreen, which was a huge, HUGE problem for the SW prequels. It didn't feel like any of the characters were really and truly there in the scene. More like they were in front of it somewhere, between the world onscreen and the fourth wall.

You could write this off as a failure on Lucas' part, since his love of technical wizardry eventually came to override everything else he does as a director. But still, it's better to have your actors playing against reality.

I've been interested, but not exactly biting at the bit over the new Star Wars sequels. Something I'd watch in the theaters, but wouldn't line up for on Day 1.

This video changed my mind. The simple fact they're doing some things oldschool rather than making a green screen cartoon makes it look and feel more like the original, good old Star Wars.

I think we (the group of readers) mostly agree that Episodes I-III left everyone with a bad taste in their mouths from a story and CGI standard.

I agree that SW I was weak, but I loved II & III.

If you watch the original version, set in the Tokugawa period Japan, you would see what the first Star Wars movie could have been. At least he choose a good actor to play General Rokurota--I mean Kenobi; and he kept the spirit of the two peasants alive in 3PO and R2. I'll give him credit for that.

Huh? Star Wars Episodes I-VI. If you are referring to my "readers" comment, I meant readers in this thread/forum. Is that it? :p

I believe they are referring to the 2nd trilogy Lucas wanted to make with characters like JarJar, Padme, Darth Maul...o_O Personally I hope that second trilogy never sees the light of day. Although that Darth Maul and General Grievous are pretty cool characters. Maybe they can be part of VII.;)

Oh, lol, I got it... Finally. :p:p

Realistic anticipation and expectation. I don't want this to be like The Phantom Menace all over again.

It all depends on the value of the newest characters and what they will bring to the franchise's future. JJ Abrams said his fav new character is Captain Phasma. I have some higher hopes for Kylo Ren and him being deeper than the puddle depth of Dark Maul, Count Dooku, and Boba Fett. Kylo isn't a Sith but he could be the best SW villain since Vader. And Finn looks promising.

Personally, I love the Star Wars and just saw The Empire Strikes Back a few days ago. It is my 3rd all-time fav movie franchise behind Back to the Future and Indiana Jones and my #1 fav that is currently still running along with Marvel Cinematic Universe. I would love to see SW regains its throne at the box office by snatching it from MCU and re-establish itself as the most popular movie franchise again. But I also would prefer if the quality of films improves than worry about box office revenue which seemed to be the case with the prequels.

My expectations are like this -

Some analysts are hyping that it can cross $600M in one weekend. I don't buy it. Piracy can ruin it all. I say it won't explode that much in December but it will have better longevity than Jurassic World and might even surpass it as the 3rd highest grossing ever. It all depends on reviews and word of mouth to sustain its stamina. It has no competition the first few months of 2016. Star Wars isn't popular in most of Asia esp in China.

The NT (new trilogy) will be much better than PT but probably still below OT. The new characters will be a shade below in appeal next to the OT cast but way better than Hayden & Co.

The standalone films might surprise too. The Force Awakens might just be an 8/10 at best similar to Age of Ultron with expectations never being reached. I didn’t expect Captain America: Winter Soldier to be my fav MCU film but it did. And I am not much of a fan of Cap. I hope Iron Man kicks his *** in Civil War. I didn't like Richard Alpert much in LOST but Ab Aeterno became my 2nd fav episode behind The Constant. Perhaps Rogue One or a standalone Han Solo or Yoda origin story can surpass our expectations and majority of the main SW entries. Yoda and Han Solo are two of the top 3 fav SW characters for me next to OT Darth Vader.

I actually think December is the PERFECT MONTH to show a Star Wars movie based on merchandising and lack of competition except for some Oscar-nominees. James Cameron figured it out and succeeded twice. And neither Titanic and Avatar are considered franchises with a single film for each. Cameron is trying to emulate Lucas by creating a universe and mythology with Avatar sequels but the characters lack any appeal compared to SW and Marvel. And a Star Wars in December can reignite the toy industry and hobby collecting which peaked during the 1980's before Internet.

I wouldn't argue if some people say Star Wars is an overrated franchise. I actually think The Lord of the Rings is a better trilogy than the SW OT. I saw the extended version of Fellowship and starting to like it again. Of course, I will still love the SW characters more than TLotR cast. No matter how lame Luke Skywalker can be, he is still way better than Frodo Baggins and all the Hobbits. But SW can be overrated. ANH didn't age well. They partially blow up the Death Star, get a medal for it, and it divided a timeline. The Clerks (1994) commentary on ROTJ about Ewoks is all you really need to know about its flaws. TESB is really the only great SW film and featured all the major players in the series. The rest ranges from awful to very good. I only keep coming back because I love the characters so much and curious what new planet will be introduced.

Memorable characters and decent story. That's all I expect a very good SW film to excel at. The PT failed at those areas. The prequels were like The Godfather Part III. Vito, Sonny, Fredo, Tom Hagen, Fat Clemenza, and Hymen Roth were not there for Part III. They were DEAD by that poimt. We were left with Michael, Kay, Vincent, and horrible acting from Sophia Coppola. PT didn't have Han, Luke, Leia, and Lando. We were left with Obi-Wan, Palpatine, Yoda flipping around, and horrible acting from Hayden Christensen. Any franchise or future entry loses its luster if the cast and story weakens.

"The force is strong in my family"- if that's the trailer its old news, but still love it and still gives me chills when I watch it! :)
The more I hear it the more the grammar annoys me. He says "my father has it". Um, no, your father had it, he's dead.

Well, now that I've read a bit more about Star Wars Rogue One I am more psyched for that film than VII. Sounds like it will be very focused, suspenseful and exciting. I like people on a mission films anyway so...

Anticipation Rating

Sequel Trilogy
VII - The Force Awakens (2015) - 8/10
VIII (2017) - ??
IX (2019) - ??

Star Wars Anthology -
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016) - 6/10
Untitled Han Solo film - 8/10

Hey, Donnie Yen is in Rogue One and we will briefly see Darth Vader in it.

I ranked my Top 100 favorite films of all-time. On my 32 gb thumb drive, I put 35 of my Top 40 favs which included all Star Wars, Indiana Jones, and Back To The Future. I couldn't put all 40 favs because I added non-favs like TPM and AOTC in it to complete a series. I was asking myself if The Force Awakens will ever be added onto it? Will the Sequel Trilogy ever surpass the Original Trilogy for me?

My prediction is I believe the ST will be as good as the best MCU films but probably NOT in my Top 40 favs. Even the LotR films aren't in my Top 40 but I rank them high for quality. The SW ST is like the Final Fantasy VII Remake. Maybe it is part being jaded and part nostalgia, but alot of newer action/adventure movies never really make my Top 50 cut. There is something about the originals that can never be surpassed. A magic and charm even with its visual flaws. We are also older now. These newer films will talk down on us like we are all still 12-year olds. Back then, we didn't mind it because we really were still kids.

Prior to the TFW trailer, Age of Ultron was my most anticipated for 2015. Then I watch it and it kinda disappoints because of my high expectations were. I still like it enough though but not a Top 40 fav. I have to also consider the SW directors. JJ Abrams is pretty good but NOT that good. His body of work can be questionable at times. I liked Looper, Godzilla (2014), and Jurassic World enough. The latter being a Top 100 for me and my 2nd fav JP film. But I am still unsure how well Rian Johnson, Colin Trevorrow, and Garreth Edwards will do with these stories.

There is a reason why the Batman films can be so inconsistent with the different writers, directors, cast, and crew. I can imagine these future SW will be solid, solid movies. Maybe not all of them. A couple stinkers. A few making my Top 100. The cast could be fun enough but perhaps lacking some of the magic of the OT cast. But the ST surpassing the ones written from the original SW & Indiana Jones creator, George Lucas? Nah. It would be like The Hobbit trilogy never really surpassing The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

We have to be unsure because it is still frickin' DI$NEY! They will alter things to their liking. Lessen the creative freedom. Something Lucas always fought for! If some think the Ewoks in ROTJ or those MCU films are silly full of WWE-style posturing, imagine how silly it might be for future Star Wars franchise becoming DI$NEY-fied? They can milk a franchise just like what Sony did to Spider-Man and what Disney will still do to Pirates of the Caribbean.

"The other one — what happens to Luke afterward — is much more ethereal. I have a tiny notebook full of notes on that. If I’m really ambitious, I could proceed to figure out what would have happened to Luke" (Lucas in 1980).

Interviewed in 2012 after the announcement of the new trilogy, Lucas biographer Dale Pollock said that he had, in the 1980s, read the outlines to 12 Star Wars episodes planned by Lucas, but had been required to sign a confidentiality agreement. Pollock said: "The three most exciting stories were 7, 8 and 9. They had propulsive action, really interesting new worlds, new characters. I remember thinking, 'I want to see these 3 movies.'"

So many people are excited about the new Star Wars trilogy. Geek auteurs are excited. Boys and girls across America are excited. Harrison Ford is not entirely anti-excited. One person, however, is definitely not invested in the latest extension of George Lucas’ star-hopping franchise. At last night’s Britannia Awards at the Beverly Hilton hotel, EW asked honoree Quentin Tarantino if he was interested in the quickly-developing sequel trilogy. “I could so care less,” he responded. So he’s not fan?

“No, sorry. Especially if Disney’s going to do it. I’m not interested in the Simon West version of Star Wars .”
