You may not like it, but you can shoot huge holes in all the films.

Why didn't the rebels make multiple copies of the Death Star plans and send them by different couriers? - They were under duress got them out as fast as they could

How fortunate that the escape pod landed somewhat near Luke. - Leia knew Obi Wan was Tatooine so she was headed there- it was the closest planet. Not sure how long until Luke met the droids.

How fortunate that 3PO and R2 were snagged by the same Jawas. - How man Jawas could there be?

What a stroke of luck that that sandcrawler just happened to stop at the Lars homestead. - Lar's is a frequent customer

What luck that R5-D4 had a bad motivator and 3PO convinced Lars to buy R2 (I think R2 sabotaged R5!) - Have you ever tried to maintain an R5 unit in a desert? The Jawas probably scavenge mostly cast off or derelict droids - not in the best state of repair.

Why didn't the Empire place a heavier guard on the Millennium Falcon? - It's in the death star, what could happen?

Why didn't the Empire launch a LOT more fighters to fight the rebels? The Death Star would have THOUSANDS!

Why didn't the rebels do an emergency evacuation of Yavin IV like they did from Hoth?

I try not dwell on plot holes too much, a movie can't show everything so there's things you need to assume. I TOTALLY agree on the last two. That's always bugged me.

So George Lucas is butt hurt now that he can't screw up Star Wars anymore.

Sorry George, you lost all credibility when you gave us Jar Jar Binks.

this really.

The only thing in the universe more vile and evil than even the darkest sith really.

Georges issue was he has full control for this. No dissenting opinion when you have the whole show. Jar Jar might not have happened of someone with clout was in the editing room watching the dailies and going George....this crap is not working. really its not. Sorry buddy but I am pulling rank. make this thing leave the film. Gracefully and nicely or slasher flick style I care not...next scene is his last.

well that his changes to the original stuff. bank of lucas took a big credibility hit there. Something's you just don't change. Han did shoot first (among other changes). Its on record.

I watched the George Lucas interview on Charlie Rose, and he's definitely got a unique perspective on the movie industry - - not many insiders have enough independence to tell the truth like he does. And certainly JJ Abrams has nowhere near his ability to create a resonant mythology. As he said in the interview: "They wanted to do a retro movie, I don't like that."

Agreed. Lucas did butcher the OT once (heavy) CGI was possible (but I guess that was super tempting back then) but I think of him as a brilliant ideas man that needs the right team to channel/question his stuff - if done right pretty unique things can happen.

JJ Abrams for example knows his craft (and effects) but lacks any originality. He plays solely by the numbers.

I almost cheered at Han's death scene which was the only thing that comes near to create some real tension. Btw I read it that Kylo wasn't torn one single moment but played his father - so that worked well.

I just started to watch the video (thanks for the link) and two things immediately jumped out ...

Charlie Rose doesn't do his homework. He didn't know that Lucas hadn't won an Oscar. (Thalberg excepted)

And that Lucas "they don't give awards to popular movies" will experience the greatest butt-hurt known to mankind if Star Wars wins this year.

I'm sure his bank balance will help soften the blow!

To be fair to GL he gets a lot of stick. But without him we wouldn't have SW at all, so I can forgive him for the edits and Jar Jar Binks!

I looked up his filmography on IMDB. Almost all of his work is Star Wars, or Raiders of the Lost Ark. It's pretty amazing when you see it listed. He found his niche ... and filled it.

That's the problem, he doesn't ask for help. He does what he wants because he can. He even said he can't let go of SW. So even if he was brought on as an advisor, he would have taken over production and most likely caused a riff that would have ruined TFA.

George might be very creative but he goes over board. It's like he just throws everything onto the screen and hopes it all works. Had he brought on a screenwriter for 1-3 and asked for opinions we might have had better movies.

Im sure Disney saw his treatments for 7-9 and thought, this crap would never sell.

Pretty much hypothetical. And SW is his baby, so that's understandable. I guess even he recognized the failure the PT was (be it in the closet only). The upside with someone like that is something radical can happen and a masterpiece as a result (downside: Indy 4 or the PT).

Upside with Disney: they know their 'customers' and how to cater to them, so all the upcoming movies will please a whole lot of people. Downside: no risks taken hence nothing out of the ordinary.

But I'm pretty relaxed, got my OTs in hd and the rest is just a bonus. All the people I talked to so far in real life (all 30yo+) were disappointed by TFA.

Snip...

Agreed 100% with this. It was all a ploy to get him in closer. He, being Kylo almost had a little snicker/smile creep up on him when he was finally able to do him in.

Yep, creepy (I like that!) he almost had an orgasm when he pene.. pierced him. Wasn't sure what to think when the one bad guy of the new cast of an extremely PC movie was given a slavic appearance - but whatever I guess.

Capt. Phasma was totally wasted btw, so much potential. That general (forgot the name) should have been older, heck after so many heavy nods to the past who would have cared if there is a Tarkin reprise in there as well.

Snork (ridiculous name btw - unfortunately the names given were all pretty...underwhelming) is the Emperor, right?

To step away from the new Star Wars movie itself for a moment, one thing that's really bothering me is the merchandising. #WheresRey is real. My wife and 6yo daughter went to Target to buy a Rey action figure. They didn't have 1. None. The main character and they didn't have her on the shelves. They weren't sold out. No wall space was dedicated to her.

When my wife told me this, I didn't believe her. I even called Target myself. Thought she either missed her or they were sold out. Target said nope. Said they really didn't get many in stock and had no orders coming. I was and still am livid about this. This is out and out sexism. I've heard about it, sympahized with it, but never truly felt it until I saw my daughter's face and the impact it had. Screw Disney. Screw Target. Screw everyone associated with the merchandising for this movie.

Rey figures exist, apparently in small quantities. But they also excluded her form the character pack. THE MAIN CHARACTER. EXCLUDED. What galaxy is this OK in? Disney has said they were avoiding spoiling the movie so there will be more coming. Puh-lease. Having every other figure out there is OK, but not the main one?

It's just really sad and upsetting that we had to explain this problem to my daughter. We took her to see the movie the day after Christmas. The theater was packed. She was the only one dressed in costume as Princess Leia. Couldn't have been more excited. The Force is strong with her. I pray she grows up strong enough and wise enough to help destroy this kind of BS from the universe once and for all.

The force is strong with her?! :D Princess Leia ftw!!! Coolest female heroine there is..

Give her a jedi-hug and cheers to you too, Tilpots!!

Some backpedalling by George.
The complete hour-long "Charlie Rose Show" interview, which aired Dec. 25 and surfaced online this week, starting gaining traction, prompting Lucas to clarify the statements he made to Rose in a statement released via Disney:

"I want to clarify my interview on the Charlie Rose Show. It was for the Kennedy Center Honors and conducted prior to the premiere of the film. I misspoke and used a very inappropriate analogy and for that I apologize. I have been working with Disney for 40 years and chose them as the custodians of Star Wars because of my great respect for the company and Bob Iger's leadership. Disney is doing an incredible job of taking care of and expanding the franchise. I rarely go out with statements to clarify my feelings but I feel it is important to make it clear that I am thrilled that Disney has the franchise and is moving it in such exciting directions in film, television and the parks. Most of all I'm blown away with the record breaking blockbuster success of the new movie and am very proud of JJ [Abrams] and Kathy [Kennedy]."

If you listen to the Charlie Rose interview, George comes off as bitter and shallow.

I gave up on listening to Lucas interviews some time ago.

I am still baffled by the disparity between Lucas' mediocre mind and the fantastically entertaining OT that he helped to spawn and oversaw.

Perhaps he was one of the first or few to utilize Joseph Campbell's brilliant ideas on collective archetypes? Was it the novelty of the sfx of the first SW? The likeability and easygoing charisma of it's stars?

I don't know. I just know that SW4 had a sense of fun, novelty, freshness and even innocence that made the film a joy to embrace.

Therefore, I must conclude (for now) that the addictive pull and fun of 7 must be due to extracting at every last opportunity, the high points of 4, with a new 2015 CGI varnish.

Abrams may be embarrassingly derivative, but he is SMART enough to know what audiences want.

Lucas may not impress with his verbosity, but he struck a universal chord with his story of the hero, now set in outer space.

Now, where did Lucas get his astrotheology. From Campbell as well?

At the very least I understand my own fascination with SW; it is an exploration of the human psyche more than it is about just a run of the mill sci fi film.

I hate to tell you both, but as an avid SW fanboy as a kid, who had all the action figures and second gen GI Joe figures, female figures don't sell well.

It has to do with the fact a Darth Vader/Kylo Ren will sell literally hundreds for ever one Ren figure. Princess Leia was a key hero in the OT yet her figure was always harder to find. Don;t even get me started on the GI Joe Baroness figure.

Action figures appeal to a majority young male audience. It's economics, not sexism.

Getting close to PRSI territory.

macbook_21 nailed it:

If JJ made it too different people would complain.
If he makes it too similar people complain.

The film is an entire shambles as a sequel. It is a whole heck of a lot of fun as a remake thinly veiled as a sequel.

If you're a die hard sw fan there are always areas of the movie to criticize(Luke's beard should've been longer, the movie sucked). That being said I also agree as a remake it was great and in that way it was an excellent movie. I am extremely pleased they reduced the amount of CGI used for featured actors(jar jar). That was extremely distracting for me in the prequels.

My 7 and 13 year old loved it. Isn't that the age range of some of the biggest critics when they saw the original?
