Actually older models have this too, I listened to my old 5s and 5 and they also made those sounds.
The whine is much more pronounced on the 7. I compared on my 4s, 5s, and 6s and while all displayed a small amount of his when the audio was at max volume, the 7 had a very audible whine around 8000 hz

He's probably referring to RETURNING versus warranty exchange. If you return, you can get a brand new boxed unit, otherwise Apple may give you a refurb.
Also wondering if it is returned when I go Saturday, since I have already turned in my iphone 6 to ATT, how will that affect the promotion they are doing.

Does anyone have issues with the front camera having the lightning constantly change (guess its the sensor that determine how much light to give?)? I noticed this the other night when I was Facetiming.

I just tested this again after doing the 10.0.2 update and making a "finger snapping" video on both the 7+ and 6S+ and comparing. I also used the MoviePro app which allows you to reduce the record volume level.

What seems to be going on is that the mic gain on the 7 Plus appears much higher than the 6S Plus. There is a small burst of white noise after staccato sounds on the 6S just as with the 7, but it is not as loud. The mic on the 7 is so hot it is even picking up my footsteps as I walk across carpet. I guess you could reason that the hiss is a product of the mic gain.

Whether or not I would do a return over this would be a matter of personal preference I suppose. I doubt I would do a return over this issue if I have an otherwise perfect phone. I would also doubt that Apple will publicly address this, last year they never said anything about the "pressure point" screen defect which was much more serious.

But I hope there will be a patch coming that will help deal with this, it seems like it could be dealt with in software.

Oh bugger.

Just listened closely to my iPhone 7. It has this high-pitch whining coming from the back of the phone. My iPhone 6S does not have it.

Also, static noise when recording videos. I recorded some video with both my iPhone 7 and iPhone 6S, and the video from the 6S does not have the same loud level of static noise.

I listened to both videos also on my computer, just to make sure the static was not produced by iPhone 7's speakers. It's definitely in the video recorded with iPhone 7.

As I do not record video that often, I wonder how long this would have gone unnoticed if I hadn't tested it.

Is this different than the hissing/buzzing? My first unit had terrible buzzing but my new one is perfect. Only some normal mic noise and that seems to be it.

Yes it's different than the buzz from the processor. This is an audible whine, a high pitched note audible during video playback that is otherwise silent.

It sounds like white noise when recording a video.

Do I get call this the "WhiteWhinnyCrappyStaticNoiseGate"???!

No.

It is interesting though, there seem to be two issues here. Some are experiencing a white noise hiss and some are experiencing a high pitched whine. I assume they're related?

I'm going to Apple tomorrow with no appointment I'm hoping I can walk out with a 256GB iPhone 7 Plus in Black, or at least the 128GB I need replaced.

I just buy phones I don't run diagnostics :)

Week 38 here... bad mic for sure... a lot of white noise in video! I will have to talk to apple about exchanging it.

Also, static noise when recording videos. I recorded some video with both my iPhone 7 and iPhone 6S, and the video from the 6S does not have the same loud level of static noise.

first of all, i dont think we have defective units - i guess it's kind of normal on iphone 7.

second, i tested too and found static noise on my 6s too but not as high frequent as on the 7.

i will not contact apple as for now, too much hustle to wait for a new unit to find out then it has the same static noise...

We do have defective units as not everyone is having this issue.

tried my 6S+ and it has this noise too and quite loud... iOS10 bug? Nope, just checked some records taken with ios9 and the same background noise is there...

Exactly the same as in this vid
Just captured a video with this issue.

I think that is normal for mics in phones.

This was the straw that broke the camel's back. I have returned my iPhone 7 and will stick with my Galaxy S7 for a while longer. Lovely phone but didn't feel like a true upgrade over the Galaxy, more of a sidegrade; with some things being better and some worse. Couldn't justify the £500 expense. Especially not when there's a widespread major issue like this.

Good luck everyone, hope you can exchange yours for working models promptly.

I am hearing similar feedback while recording silent videos and voice memos on my 6s Plus. Had it since launch and just now noticed the noise. I wonder if it's iOS 10 related. Didn't hear the noise on videos and voice memos recorded on iOS 9.

I've done a test, while recording slow-mo the static is at the beginning but then it stops. But the front camera and back camera has the white noise static

I found the same noise in ios9 records too.

Just left Apple Store. They are mailing me a replacement. Said I was the first one they said reporting it in store. Said it wasn't normal.
