Steam for Mac Client Available for Download, Service Not Yet Active

TF2 is not even showing up in my game list. I got it through Orange Box, but I also received Portal and Half Life 2 through Orange Box, and it's showing up. But Portal is downloading extremely fast for me, 1.8 MB/s

Agreed. It hasn't worked for me for 1/2 hour, but I just quit and restarted Steam and now Portal is downloading. :)

I wonder how other local users with Steam accounts will be treated. What happens when someone else logs in and wants to play a Steam game that's already installed but with the executables in another user's ~/Documents?

That is a good point. I guess the login is user specific so they decided to install to the current users home folders. Maybe the save location can be edited at some point in a future release.

Because when something is released, I expect for it to work correctly. Something can be a pain whether or not I have a need for it at the current time.

Seriously? First round tech & software is always prone to bugs etc.. intitial Users (read guinea pigs) feedback helps work out kinks..

Thats why many wait for second revisions..

I can understand having the game state and saves in a user's home directory.

It's just that the executables should be accessible to all users with Steam accounts and that have purchased the game(s) as well.

/Library/Application Support makes sense. Otherwise you're asking users to have multiple copies of the same files to run the same application. I haven't had a chance to play with any symlinks yet.

2pm CST...

i hope later tonight i can download and play cs. lol til then its starcraft 2 beta!!

I can't remember any of the credentials I need to use this game, other than having the serial number on the box. Is there any way I can add this to my library to play on my Mac or am I SOL?
If it matters, I signed up with a new steam account.

Many thanks,
Neil.

Edit: Is it even possible to add any of my games? Esp. the one I havent opened (for PC).

If you have ever used that serial on another steam account you are out of luck, however steam support can maybe help you find your old account...

If you haven't used the serial, you can open up a new account and add the serial to it from within steam to get access to the game! (Menu, Games -> Activate a Game on Steam)

That does make sense. Maybe they think having to enter your mac user password is not very practicle. But I think you are right I would prefer it the way you suggested.

Will see when it is finally working. I did check preferences but no way to change the save location that I can see. Surely that would be an easy modification for Valve.

Help !!

Mine just keeps telling me to check my internet connection and try again :(
btw, check who submitted the article :D

HELPPPPPP

You can always click on SHOW>Mac Games on the library page to see which ones are available for the Mac.
I own the orange box so it should work. I downloaded portal, but when I try to launch it I get that error. I think I might have fixed it by right clicking on portal, properites, verify game files, then tried to launch it. It seems to be downloading more files now.

So Portal is downloading. It says that 400 MB have been downloaded so far, but then in the details it says that about 800 MB of 3,873.6 MB have been downloaded. Is this a Steam thing, like the 3,873.6 represents uncompressed data, but the 400 MB downloaded represents compressed data?

On my Macbook Pro the performance is ... well, little choppy. I can't wait to get home and try it on my Mac Pro. Just like the Starcraft 2 beta, works awesome on my Mac Pro and so so on my Macbook Pro.

Apple really needs to get off their arse and work with these companies to do some optimizations ... stat!

I was in the beta and the beta page is now gone check out the full steam store with mac demos and games ready to go

The Steam Homepage now actually has a link to the Mac download, though they aren't exactly massively over-advertising it at this point.

Is there anyway to save download time by copying over the GCF files from my windows partition?

I realize the code will be new to support OpenGL, etc. But it seems like most of the texture and graphic files will be identical. Seems like a lot of time and bandwidth could be saved if we could copy over the files and then just have the needed Mac updates applied.
