You don't think it's anything to do with one having a desktop-class GPU and the other being a laptop?

At least you got to download it. For me, clicking on "Get portal now" always throws me back to the same exact page.

FAIL! But hopefully it'll work tomorrow...
 
Somehow mine keeps saying "Steam needs to be online to update. Please confirm your network connection and try again"

And no its not cause of MY connection ;)

Yeah... you guys are totally right. It looks like I'm going to have to lower my expectations a bit here. I guess I just forgot this is a first release. I've just been so anxious to finally not have to reboot anymore that I was kind of irritated when it didn't work.
 
Once that thread is updated to show that the service is now online this thread will be redundant, until then First to post, First to point out. YOUR WELCOME
 
Okay this time it didn't crash, it even tells me that I should switch graphics cards for best performance. Haven't played yet because I can't switch cards just yet, got too much to do, and I don't want a bad first impression :)

I understand that ... however, from what the Blizzard devs have been saying they can't push any more performance out of any of the GPUs without the support of Apple.

Now, I want to also point out that I have played both SC2 and Portal on this same laptop using Windows and the performance was much higher.

This is all on Apple directly related to software optimizations.
 
Anyone else getting this when trying to install Portal?

Solved

For anyone having trouble with "invisible" network connections and steam, app zap the app ,but be careful not to empty the trash as it will trash all your windows files as well.

Pretty sure its not ... they said they will be releasing new games every week.

I am willing to bet this is to give them extra time to finish testing all the extra games. Well, its also part business and marketing reasons. But ya, if they gave us everything today ... we wouldn't get it until next month :D
