What crappy networks do you have in the US. This is ridiculous.

Well in the US's defense it really is much easier to get good coverage of a country that is smaller than many of our counties inside our individual states.

aapl

I hope it drops $20. Would be a great time to buy.

Anyone outside these forums doesn't seem to know or care. Minneapolis news had a story on how "apple may go to verizon" yesterday. Nothing about reception. Over-played.

other shareholder are not as emotional? as we are and and slightly delayed reaction?

aapl shares sliding, but WTF, BP is up? what's up?

wait some more before before buying aapl......... what happened early june when prices were so "low"?

"It's just a phone" would ring less false and hypocritical if Steve himself actually considered it just a phone, but given the fact that he markets it as the second coming of Christ and puts an asking price on it that's higher than other phones except ones customized with 24k gold, diamonds or Svarovski crystals, I'd say he's resorting to revisionism now. If it's just a phone, here's an idea, Steve: Remove all apps except SMS. Remove the iPod and video playback functionality. No bookstore. Sell it for 50 bucks unlocked. Then it'll be just a phone.

You are intentionally misinterpreting what was (allegedly) said.

Obviously he's not referring to the capability of the device when he said this. In the grand scheme of life, it's a phone. It's not worth losing your sanity over, as the (alleged) customer that (allegedly) e-mailed him seemed to be doing.

Not gonna get worked up about this

You know, I was reading this article and looked down at my 3GS sitting there with full bars. I picked it up and held it so that my hand was at the bottom of the phone, where the antenna lies. Immediately dropped a bar. Move my hand away (either to the top or in a more more natural phone-to-the-ear position) the bar came back. I've never noticed that until now. And I've never had dropped calls or poor performance outside of being outside of AT&T's network. I don't have an iPhone 4, and maybe it's a much bigger problem now, but based on my experiences and what I've read... I think this has gotten blown way out of proportion.

I respect the right of those who have an iPhone 4 to feel differently, however. :)

EGOMANIAC OF THE DAY!

Thanks :)
No. In all honesty I'm sorry for anyone having issues with this thing. I would be angry, too. But I really think this is more of an ATT issue:

I've had the iPhone 4 since launch day and I am using it without a case/bumper and have had ZERO dropped calls and superb call quality all the time. It's as good as the 3G/3Gs and better than the original iPhone - and I've had them all.

Remember that the five bars on the iPhone are logarithmic in showing how good the signal is. In Germany with T-Mobile - NO problems with the iPhone 4. Best phone I've ever had the pleasure of owning.

At this point in time it'll never fly, as I said before.

6 months down the road? Maybe, but still not likely.

The most that will happen is apple will be forced to provide bumpers, and that's about it, except for the cancellation of restocking fees. I'm not a fan of class action suits either, only the lawyers see the benefit. Especially over something so inconsequential as this. Don't like it, return it. That's liable to be the outcome of any lawsuit in this manner; there's no safety issues, false advertisements, or misleading statements.

In fact, its comparable to you buying a router and it sucking. Do you sue the manufacture of the router? No, you return it, and get another one. If your wifi card sucks, do you sue the makers of the card? No, you return it. Does the phone function as advertised? Yes. Therefore lawsuit = fail. It's just a bunch of ignorant and greedy people grasping at air.

If this lawsuit DID win, it would be a very, very bad year for all manufacturers, because that would give the consumers credence to sue anyone just because they don't like the product or how it performs, irregardless of the fact that returns are readily available. Which is another reason why this lawsuit will fail.

I also agree that this is being blown out of proportion; it clearly isn't a blanket issue and I want to see more data on it. Especially issues vs carrier, more specifically issues vs carrier and frequency. Without a large amount of aggregate data they really don't have much to stand on.

I bet Mr Jony Ive is regretting the words in his video of iphone 4! "Iphone 4 is so much more than just a new product, It will have a lasting impact on the way we communicate."

No joke! a lasting impact on the way we communicate Mr ive i cant see this ever being fixed!

you mean.. "the way we don't communicate"?

iphone4= the best ipod to date! love the camera!

:D

"It is just a phone. Not worth it"

Interesting, and a good point from Steve Jobs. Funny, though, I don't remember him saying this when he announced the iPhone 4. You have to love the duplicity. It is just a phone. Not worth it. But go buy one because it's the most amazing awesome magical bla bla bla product.

On the other hand, the guy who bought the phone hasn't returned it yet. Apple will do something about it when it affects sales. Return the phone and wait until Apple fixes the problem before buying another iPhone. If enough people do this, Apple will get the message.

To me, the reception issue is not too bad since I have a case. The really major issue for me is the proximity sensor malfunctions which cause my face to mute people, hang up, and start face time. I'm really disappointed that Apple put out such a buggy product. I had similar disappointment with my i7 iMac and the video problems, which was eventually fixed with firmware. I'm giving them about a week to address the iPhone problems then I'm returning it and taking a look at droid or something..

It's not a defective product. Just one with a few quirks. I've always had quirks on all my other phones. It's a fact with technology.
Guess we will have to disagree - I think a phone that when normally held loses almost 10x the signal of the previous version and consistently drops calls in places previous versions never did is a huge enough step backwards as to be considered a defect.

By "not worth it" I assume he's offering a rebate then?? Steve Jobs' famous dismissiveness may start to become a liability now that he's increasingly using it against customers with a legitimate gripe.

I've read on the Apple discussion boards that reseting the phone's preferences fixes the proximity sensor issue for some.

I have lost all respect for this man and his company as of today. I love my Macbook, I love my iPad, I've loved many past iPods, and I love my iP4... this is ******** though.

He is not only insulting customers he is taking us all for granted. My iP4 will be returned on the last day of my return window.

Take his email account away!

EDIT: I can't believe some of you still think this is a software issue. I can stand directly under an ATT tower or beside a Microcell and lightly touch the side of my phone (with a bumper on) and lose 4 bars. Sometimes I can even make it drop calls if it's resting in my palm. This is not software - a hand shorts out the damn antenna and it's time you defenders of Jobs know this.

I don't know why everyone is making a big deal about if the problem is true. It's easily repeatable on many, if not all phones. True it doesn't drop calls, but it will kill your data. Try downloading speedtest or some other app, turn off wifi, and run the test with the iphone on the table, and again with it in your hand. It will happen every time. If you're lucky data will still go through. If not, bye bye data connection. I've done it on multiple IP4s in different locations (read:states). It sucks it happened, and hopefully Apple can and will fix it. It's a shame they have this issue, but it's real.

Maybe I should Keep my first generation... I emailed Steve and asked what h meant by "stay tuned" and asked if he was going to give out free bumpers. He replied with "You don't need a case. The iPhone 4 works just fine" and it was sen from his iPhone, which I see as a smug way to make it seem like the iPhone 4 works. I emailed him back asking if he denies there are significant problems with reception, and he didn't reply...

Jobs Perspective

Keep in mind that Steve Jobs almost died of cancer. He looks at life differently now hence the "it's just a phone" response.

He was not being egotistical or sarcastic.

Relax and be happy. Stay tuned. I am sure any problems will be resolved.

I agree with Steve. It's just a phone. I've had 1 dropped call that might not even have been from me. Buy a microcell or get a case. It's not that big of a deal people.

Did you even read the article?
Did you?

From my day of testing, I've determined that the iPhone 4 performs much better than the 3GS in situations where signal is very low, at -113 dBm (1 bar). Previously, dropping this low all but guaranteed that calls would drop, fail to be placed, and data would no longer be transacted at all. I can honestly say that I've never held onto so many calls and data simultaneously on 1 bar at -113 dBm as I have with the iPhone 4, so it's readily apparent that the new baseband hardware is much more sensitive compared to what was in the 3GS. The difference is that reception is massively better on the iPhone 4 in actual use.

With my bumper case on, I made it further into dead zones than ever before, and into marginal areas that would always drop calls without any problems at all. It's amazing really to experience the difference in sensitivity the iPhone 4 brings compared to the 3GS, and issues from holding the phone aside, reception is absolutely definitely improved. I felt like I was going places no iPhone had ever gone before. There's no doubt in my mind this iPhone gets the best cellular reception yet, even though measured signal is lower than the 3GS.

Ah, to be young and right all the time - again.

Hey, I just bought a patio grill for $700.00... That I had to put together myself. And, it didn't even come with a grill cover or cooking utensils! So, I don't really get all the bitching about "the ****ing" price of the phone, etc. If $200/$300.00, and the "extra" pay out over the contract life is that BIG a deal for you, then you have more problems than any phone can fix. Plus, I had to change wireless companies a couple of years back because, imagine this, every company's coverage varies over a wide enough area - it even varies from month to month in the same areas.

I'm an Apple stock holder and I expect the value of the stock to go up and down... Even for reasons that have nothing to do with a product or a spokesman's words. I also expect some people to be happy with a particular product and others not... You don't like the phone, return it. And, good luck with your next try. You don't like the company? Sorry, if you get out voted by people who do. It's a numbers thing, that's all.

Life is full of choices, even choices we don't want to make. If you wanted a better phone and were disappointed, take action to get happy and come up with a solution that works better for you. My phone works OK, and the extra features make it a great purchase for me even if the phone part wasn't perfect. I own the stock and generally like the products Apple cranks out, but I'm no slave to products that don't work for me.

Seek practical, not perfect.

Most things require balance. Ranting about your disappointment, after your disappointment is made clear, is just wasting time and energy.

Enjoy your weekend - you can't get the time back.

But, you can get another phone, if that suits you.

With all due respect, I feel that your argument/metaphor may be more appropriate if someone was upset with iPhone 4 because it doesn't support flash, or some other ancillary feature. People are upset because in several instances a premium phone is not completing one of it's core functions: successfully making a phone call.

Forget the utensils it didn't come with, what if your $700 grill didn't light properly? Would it be wrong for you to be disappointed then?
