Until then I have duct tape on the sides to make it functional and when asked I let people know that's what you have to do to make the iP4 function reliably.

That looks stupid because duct tape is too thin of a dielectric. Holding the phone properly (don't block the antenna portion) will usually work much better.

Geee, I wonder why apple decided to release their own bumper covers. Very convenient Steve. Let's make an extra $30 because we know our iPhone 4 customers will need it.

This seems true. But shouldn't ATT be able to install a better antenna network with all the capital?

No, it's AT&T. They just put out lofty press releases talking up how they plan to expand their 3G coverage in 28 areas by a specific date, then fail to follow completely through. AT&T spend money on enhancing network? Only in NY and Cali.

I'll continue to stay in a holding pattern to see how all this plays out. I'm not buying until then.

Besides, my 3GS still works for some odd reason, even after iP4 came out. I thought it would stop working, forcing me to upgrade immediately.....

Guess we will have to disagree - I think a phone that when normally held loses almost 10x the signal of the previous version and consistently drops calls in places previous versions never did is a huge enough step backwards as to be considered a defect.

Agreed.

Let's face facts -

It's a phone, many are having problems making calls - that's a serious defect.

(those not - just **** off, the design is faulty, you will experience it differently in different locations - you can mask it with a bumper, which should be free if that's the solution).

"Quirks" were the crappy camera on the earlier iPhones, the lack of Flash etc - people didn't mind and put up with it, no problem you know what you're getting. The phone having poor call quality or dropping calls due to design is a recall issue if software doesn't fix it, many companies have recalled for far less.

I normally hate Steve's email responses, because he's usually so rude, but he really got it right this time. Everyone is too obsessed with this thing, it's just a phone. Get over it, nerds. Get outside and do something useful.

Get over the fact that a phone has trouble making calls?

Intelligent responses apparently aren't your forte.

Haha - very good point.
"Relax, it's just a phone" - I wonder how SJ would have reacted if one of his staff had said this to him after he found out about the Gizmodo leak...
Because running a business requires attention to matters of this nature, while pissing over a personal cell phone which isn't, at heart, much more than a toy—the position many whiners here are in—is just inane.

Well, it is THE number one accessory for cell phones, high markup, and perhaps Apple felt it was time to get in the game?

I'd bet anything that there is going to be a change in the way the iPhones are manufactured. In a couple of months, all new iPhone 4s will have some coating on the metal antennas, or something like that. Some sort of fix that is not visually obvious, but will mitigate the problem.

My wife has an 8g 3G with a cracked front screen. It's slow and the silent button no longer works. I told her I would help her buy an iP4 this month so that she has a better phone, and so that we can video chat with FaceTime.

But now I'm starting to wonder if that is such a good idea. The normal way she holds her phone is with her left hand, which I'm worried will cause signal issues. My phone doesn't normally have the issue, but sometimes it does... although I never hold with my left hand. She also spends a lot of time holding her phone with her shoulder against her ear and every time I do that, my face hangs up on people.

I'm torn because at this point, I think her 3G functions as a phone better than the iP4 and she will be extremely disappointed.

Does your wife have and normally use a case on her 3G? If so, problem solved.

As usual you don't know what you are talking about. Without the duct tape a 5 bar signal goes to dropped call when the iP4 is held normally. With it, only a bar drop. Duct tape works excellently.

Holding the phone properly (don't block the antenna portion) will usually work much better.
Holding the phone normally (which is always properly) blocks the antenna, if it must to be at the bottom of the phone it should have been inside the phone like the 3GS.

Again, how much is  paying you to be their shill?

What's the alternative? To work yourself into a frothing mess like the customer allegedly did to prompt this story?

In regards to all the people on here that are posting that their phones are just fine, and that this problem does not exist. Give it time and do some traveling. This is not an issue relating to a batch of phones etc.

From my experience. At home my phone is perfect, I can wrap my hands around it, hold every which way and it will not budge from 5 bars. Even Running speed tests using the death grip results in almost no variation.

At work, I can replicate the issue with ease. Just like you see on youtube.

At the local Apple store in west london, I have replicated this on all the phones i tried in store. I very much doubt they would keep bad phones as display models.

My conclusion is that where i live has a very strong signal (probably a tower on a building nearby), where i work the signal is weaker and a lot of phones competing for reception.

So if you think your phone is one of the perfect ones, be prepared to be traveling one day and suddenly realize that you suffer from the same issues as others. Mine is perfect.... if I am in the right place ;)

I feel for the ones in low reception areas that have bought the iphone, its an awesome device, but foremost, it must fulfill its primary purpose that of a phone.

Reasonable, and makes sense.

Could everyone that post a response include whether you have an IP4 or just piling on. If you don't have one then posting about a reception issue is kind of moot.

I don't have one yet.

It's not just dropped calls. Please stop saying this. The real problem for me is trying to use data over 3G. I can't do it unless I hold my phone in a way that makes me think I'm going to drop the phone. When I hold the phone exactly like folks do in Apple promotional materials (and like Jobs did in his keynote), i lose connectivity and can't do anything on 3G.

I did the trick of reseating the SIM and that seemed to help for a while, but I can now recreate the problem again.

completely agree

It seems I can place and receive calls showing no bars inside buildings, so that seems better. But, I'm having a terrible time connecting to the data network.
