Oh I do agree that for it to be a phone it is rather an expensive one. But when it comes to it ... Even if Steve says it is NOT a widespread report and it is NOT an issue... As a consumer we all have the right to return our product 70% return on a new product isnt something that any company can really manange. that 15% restocking fee does NOT apply if at the time of purchase you were not informed about any possible "deffects" the new product might have. Even if it is 1 in 1,000 sold. As a consumer you can return that product and ask for 100% refund. There are laws to protect the consumer and most people that have dealt with the Iphone brand know them by now.
I personally don't see an issue return the phone and ask to have your money credited for when the acutal revised version comes out... and if they decline ask for Steve jobs or whomever is that manages AT&T this days... Again if the problem is as bad as i read on this boards .. I do not see why at least 70% of the people that has purchased this new phone havent actually returned their supposedly deffective product...
Steve Jobs is being nice and replying to soem letters at least trying to let people know that he is looking into this... Even if it is a non issue. He's answer are not followed by a $100 bill so not everyone will like what he says but AT LEAST he is trying. So people should just have a little more faith and wait a little bit longer OR return their iphone....

"It's just a phone" will be more true when you're grown up. In the end it doesn't matter, and you'll throw it out in a year or two for a new one anyway. Things like watching your kids grow up, providing for a family, being there for loved ones are what really matters. That's what Steve is really saying. No device like the iPhone deserves as much emotion, positive or negative, as the person emailing Steve had.

It is kind of scary that Apple is randomly contacting YouTube-ers out of the blue and telling to stop posting videos (as the article appears to indicate). No, not kind of scary. Real scary.

Is it a non-issue or is Apple working on it? Can't really be both can it?

Absolutely. What do you thing a lot of those engineers in R&D are paid to do? Unless you think that engineers won't ever be able to figure out how to improve anything at all about the i4, the users manual, iOS 4.0 (or any other device or product, for that matter).

Then go get your money back. You can still return the phone. He's right. It's a phone. Don't like it, RETURN IT!

I have had enough of this whining. Either deal with the problem and "stay tuned" or return the phone and buy another phone to your liking.

You can not always return the phone that easily .. at least in Europe you cannot simply walk up to the counter and demand a refund as long as Apple pretends the whole thing is not an issue. You signed a legal contract for probably two years and spend a ton of money.

Not saying the reception thing necessarily is an issue, I have no idea, just saying returning a product here is not as easy as you make it sound.

I've never seen the product of such hysteria. I believe part of the problem is the common misconception that ANY poor reception is in fact universal, or that ANY good reception is likewise. Personally, I've almost always had good reception with my iPhones. Better than any phone I'd ever owned... and when I was on Nextel/Sprint my reception was usually superior to other people I knew at the time.

I've had my iPhone 4 for almost a week, and it's reception has mostly been excellent. The only exceptions have been strange burps occasionally in the basement where suddenly it would say I had 3G and still wouldn't connect to the app store or a website. Very infrequent and irreproducible.

I feel like all the people saying their EVO battery life is excellent. :D

other shareholder are not as emotional? as we are and and slightly delayed reaction?

aapl shares sliding, but WTF, BP is up? what's up?

wait some more before before buying aapl......... what happened early june when prices were so "low"?
Mostly a variety of economic fears with a small side of antenna news.
Might be a good time to buy when it settles depending on one's perspective on where the market as a whole will go.

Apple surely lives up to its marketing, this phone changed everything AGAIN! especially the signal and service issue which already was a problem:eek:

I don't believe this because there was no screen cap of the e-mail on the original link from BGR. I seriously think this is just someone trying to add fuel to the fire.

BGR keeps pulling stunts like this and it will end up being as bad as Gizmodo.

Ah, to be young and right all the time - again.

Hey, I just bought a patio grill for $700.00... That I had to put together myself. And, it didn't even come with a grill cover or cooking utensils! So, I don't really get all the bitching about "the ****ing" price of the phone, etc. If $200/$300.00, and the "extra" pay out over the contract life is that BIG a deal for you, then you have more problems than any phone can fix. Plus, I had to change wireless companies a couple of years back because, imagine this, every company's coverage varies over a wide enough area - it even varies from month to month in the same areas.

I'm an Apple stock holder and I expect the value of the stock to go up and down... Even for reasons that have nothing to do with a product or a spokesman's words. I also expect some people to be happy with a particular product and others not... You don't like the phone, return it. And, good luck with your next try. You don't like the company? Sorry, if you get out voted by people who do. It's a numbers thing, that's all.

Life is full of choices, even choices we don't want to make. If you wanted a better phone and were disappointed, take action to get happy and come up with a solution that works better for you. My phone works OK, and the extra features make it a great purchase for me even if the phone part wasn't perfect. I own the stock and generally like the products Apple cranks out, but I'm no slave to products that don't work for me.

Seek practical, not perfect.

Most things require balance. Ranting about your disappointment, after your disappointment is made clear, is just wasting time and energy.

Enjoy your weekend - you can't get the time back.

But, you can get another phone, if that suits you.

TL;DR

I wanted the time back before I even read this malarky!

My wife has an 8g 3G with a cracked front screen. It's slow and the silent button no longer works. I told her I would help her buy an iP4 this month so that she has a better phone, and so that we can video chat with FaceTime.

But now I'm starting to wonder if that is such a good idea. The normal way she holds her phone is with her left hand, which I'm worried will cause signal issues. My phone doesn't normally have the issue, but sometimes it does... although I never hold with my left hand. She also spends a lot of time holding her phone with her shoulder against her ear and every time I do that, my face hangs up on people.

I'm torn because at this point, I think her 3G functions as a phone better than the iP4 and she will be extremely disappointed.

Thers is a fix for iphone 4 the iphone 4Gs with 8mp cam non glass back and an unannounced antenna seam shift out the way of the hand! :D new contract anyone?

**This must be that dumming down of America I've been hearing about.**

Dumming? You are certainly part of it I guess.

No one knows how widespread this is. If I had one that was crap I would not be happy either. Apple needs to address it better. Free bumpers would be a first step.

I am no engineer, but since we didn't see the Monday software fix that was rumored, it sounds like it may not be software. When you have the Chinese pumping out millions of these, having some bad units is certainly possible. They don't take QC too seriously sometimes. I am sure Foxconn is getting ripped a new one at this point.

At this point I am pretty happy that I am not eligible for upgrade for another few months.

Not sure that Steve's responses to the dickwad were really smart. It is more than a phone for many of us. But we all have the option to return it if it's a bad unit. Unfortunately, this is always one of the potential problems with being an early adopter.

Steve is telling us a fix is coming, then when the return policy expires you will find out YOUR SCREWED!!!! There is no real fix it's a ***** antenna hardware issue!!!!

Did you?
I've determined that the iPhone 4 performs much better than the 3GS in situations where signal is very low, at -113 dBm (1 bar).

But the reality is you can have a 5 bar signal, pick up the phone and hold it normally and it will go even lower than -113, and drop the call. Consistently, reliable, in areas that previous versions could always make calls before.

As to the bumper talk who cares? It doesn't come with a bumper - it is sold to use 'as is' and so if it needs a case for functionality it would come with a case or cases would be free to those that were having problems.

Again, the article supports that the phone has defective levels of signal attenuation with normal holding, enough that it is severely less capable than the previous version. No matter what else it might do this is a defect pure and simple.

It is kind of scary that Apple is randomly contacting YouTube-ers out of the blue and telling to stop posting videos (as the article appears to indicate). No, not kind of scary. Real scary.

And unsubstantiated.

If it's just a phone, then why didn't SJ just dropped the case regarding the lost iPhone 4?

Haha - very good point.

"Relax, it's just a phone" - I wonder how SJ would have reacted if one of his staff had said this to him after he found out about the Gizmodo leak...

Not without imperfections, but what doesn't?

The iPhone antenna flaw is a minor issue that can easily be remedied with a small piece of Scotch tape. While some people will bristle the thought of having dropped $200 to $300 on a device completely free of issues out of the box, it is fixable. I cannot remember the last time I saw an iPhone sans case or Gelaskin (and thus will eliminate the possible issue).

Until there is a design fix, Apple should be willing to take the phone back, thus avoiding a class action lawsuit and promoting goodwill. I doubt many people will bringvthem back.

What apparently isn't fixable? The pathetic UI responsiveness on my Android 2.1 phone and its tendency to dial numbers I don't select.
