Actually, my calls drop all the time. When I am on a phone call while holdin the phone at the top, very uncomfortable, I start to relaxe and my hand slides down to it natural holding position and before I know my hand is covering the antenna and I get the three beeps of frustration.

However, just yesterday I was in a different part of Chicago, and everything was just fine, so it's definitely location specific.

So why have you not exchanged your phone? Or have you. Also odd that in some areas its an issue, other not. I forget, does ATT use several frequencies? And if so, could it be frequency related? Just a thought.

Ok, you're a fool. Anyone that holds their phone in their left hand will have this problem.

I must have two right hands then, because I hold my phone (and my girlfriends phone) on my left side and don't have this problem.

Just because your unit does it, doesn't mean every unit does. Some do, some don't.

I have lost all respect for this man and his company as of today. I love my Macbook, I love my iPad, I've loved many past iPods, and I love my iP4... this is ******** though.

He is not only insulting customers he is taking us all for granted. My iP4 will be returned on the last day of my return window.

Take his email account away!

EDIT: I can't believe some of you still think this is a software issue. I can stand directly under an ATT tower or beside a Microcell and lightly touch the side of my phone (with a bumper on) and lose 4 bars. Sometimes I can even make it drop calls if it's resting in my palm. This is not software - a hand shorts out the damn antenna and it's time you defenders of Jobs know this.

I'm really not buying that you can stand next to a tower and lose 4 bars with a bumper on. The bumper seems to be solving everyones issues, especially if you're right next to a tower. It definitely doesn't allow me to bridge the antennas through the rubber and plastic, and my phone does do it without the bumper. Right now I'm more pissed about this yellow spot that's there on my phone most of the time. Went to the apple store and of course it wasn't there then so the "genius" didn't believe me. I'm just waiting to find out if it's gonna go away bc I have a zagg invisible shield just waiting to go on with the bumper.

MacRumors, please ban this user. They have shown time and time again that they are not putting in a honest discussion, just trolling and trying to agitate.

You have to admit that this thread is about another email from the leader of Apple Inc that doesn't provide any solution or hope either. The poster suggested an insulting term for Jobs on an internet forum. Jobs, on the other hand keeps insulting their own customers. Can you ask him to be removed too?

Besides, what kind of "non issue" needs any work on it? This whole fiasco is getting ridiculous.

Like I said in another thread:
Steve Jobs would NEVER say the iPhone is "just a phone." Steve is a chairman and the CEO of Apple. Saying "it's just a phone" is basically telling the person that they can go out an get any phone, and it doesn't have to be from Apple. He would never do that, as he knows many of his email replies are made public within a few hours.

Yeah, I thought the exact same thing. The web gets flooded with fakes!

retire, relax, enjoy your family. It is just a phone. Not worth it:cool:

(i'm sure i'm wronging but doesn't seem a little intimidating here?)

Then ,how can they work on something they ! tell that don't even exist?
And more...yes i fell the irony behind the "Jobs advice "to "stay tuned".... .
Bu what i see,,is a great risk for Apple to make a gift to Android..
hurry Steve,,,,its time.:apple:

instead of tape you can try this..

Jobs also sent one final message, encouraging the customer to "retire, relax, enjoy your family. It is just a phone. Not worth it."

If its not worth it i think everyone with this problem should just return their iphone 4s until the issue is resolved. 1.7mil iphones sold? 1.7mil iphones returned! NEW RECORD!

I'm surprised that MacRumors is passing this source off as legit, when we don't have a blessed clue if the exchange is bona fide or not. It's amazing what the blogosphere does with no standards to speak of anywhere...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A293 Safari/6531.22.7)

People are overreacting to the "just a phone" comment. You have to read the whole exchange to get it. The guy works himself into an absolute frenzy over this. Jobs is saying it's not worth it to make yourself crazy over.

A little bit confusing on Jobs part.

Is it a non-issue or is Apple working on it? Can't really be both can it?

Also, anyone see the irony in "Stay Tuned" for antenna issues? I think it's funny as hell.

Agreed. Steve-O, who I greatly respect, needs to 'relax' himself. He's behaving oddly out-of-character on this issue, and I think that speaks to some underlying frustration over this issue at Apple.

Especially bizarre was an Apple rep telling a customer not to put up videos on the issue at YouTube! I mean, who do they think they are, telling the PUBLIC what it can and cannot say about Apple products!!

Jobs needs something to work on

Steve Jobs has been answering a lot of email recently. He rarely answered email when Apple was deep in iPhone and iPad development. It makes me worry that Apple doesn't have much in the pipeline to wow us.

Maybe he's just relaxing for a few weeks after the iPhone 4 rollout. I hope he stops answering emails soon, it will mean he's driving his team to develop the next great Apple product.

I can't believe Steve's attitude. I am definitely not buying another iPhone. I can't understand how people defend Apple over these issues. I hope people sue the crap out of Apple and I reckon AT&T should offer free contract cancellations for unhappy customers that are experiencing issues. Screw you Steve Jobs I'm going Google from now on. Stick your POS iPhone up your ***.

I have never had this issue with any other phone so there is NO excuse for this. Who wants a phone that looses reception when holding it in a NORMAL position. NO I will not learn to hold it a different way, I'll buy an Android mobile and hold it the way I want.
Yeah I'm mad. With good reason too.
Screw you Steve Jobs.

Haha. Steve Jobs is the man. Tired & sick of catering to all these stupid grown up babies. Stop whining because the world doesn't revolve around you.

No offense but i find this hard to believe. Sure, i can replicate the issue in places where i have weaker signals, but many places i try to replicate i can't get a single bar to drop even if i place the phone in a kryptonite and lead-lined box (ok, i'm exaggerating on the kryptonite). And just about everyone out there says this problem completely goes away with a bumper on. Yet you lightly touch the side of the phone, with bumper on, directly under a tower, and drop 4 bars?? right...

Couldn't agree more. Everyone is in their return window. Buy a bumper or take it back and get a refund.

Absolutely, which is exactly what I will do. I agree with other posts that it is embarrassing after the 3rd time a call drops to tell someone "I am sorry it's my phone."

I am right handed but hold my phone in my left hand. I am very careful not to touch the bottom left corner, but it's nearly impossible. I also find the phone dropping calls when using Bluetooth to car (so not Antenna issue).

I am not putting on a plastic bumper to make it work. I am going back to the 3GS. But as a longtime Apple user I have always liked their commitment to making technology work well, whether in UI, design or reliability.

This and the iPad WiFi issues have created a big dent for me in that belief. It is a phone first, and if it doesn't work as a phone the rest doesn't matter.

It's not just a phone. It's my sole means of communication with my clients everyday. Do you think SJ can sympathize that I drop VERY important calls daily here in NY. It is embarrassing as a professional and pathetic that I constantly have to make excuses..."it's the ****ing iPhone...sorry". Really if I wanted just a phone I would buy a POS CrackBerry.

Well, it's "not just a phone;" it's all those other things as well, like it's an iPad and a game device and an app store "whatever." Sometimes it's a phone...just not always when you want it to be one.

I don't have an iPhone because I live in an AT&T vortex. When Verizon has the iPhone, I will too. So I fiddle with my 4 year old flip-phone and wait for the Andriod Incredible that I ordered to arrive. First and foremost, I need my handheld device to be a phone...like you, I need it to be a reliable phone more then I need it to do all the other things it can do.

I think when Steve Jobs says "retire" what he means is if you'll shut up, he'll send you enough money so you can retire.

In the grand scheme of things Jobs is right. It is just a phone and not worth getting worked up over. It's not like oil contaminating the gulf or anything. Even so, I think there is a real problem (whether or not it is widespread is another issue) and I think it should be addressed promptly.

It could bear some significance if said phone were being used to coordinate Gulf Oil disaster relief. I'm sure one would want as many bars as possible while doing that...j/k

fixed that for you.

You mean the same Droid that can't make calls either. My wife is on her fifth Droid and has the same muffled/digitized voice problem. Motorola isn't admitting fault but Verizon is keenly aware of it. The noise-canceling microphone is to blame. But yet that story doesn't make headlines.

I wouldn't wish Motorola's shoddy quality on anyone.

I'm not sure if anybody posted his theory here, but, the Tech Blogger at the NY Times thinks that all the phones that were sent out in the field for testing had cases to disguise them and make them look like 3G Phones, if so then nobody's skin touched the antenna during testing, obviously the ones tested on campus had great signal strength and worked fine, but, Job's Paranoia and the unfortunate Gizmodo "scoop" may have resulted in Apple releasing a couple of million phones that don't work properly...i'm in New York, I still get about one in three calls that fail to connect, but, what else is new...

I bought a bumper case on day one to protect the glass so I never actually made any calls without it and can't be bothered to try and replicate the problem...unortunately, both the best and worst things about Apple are Steve Jobs...

Who's the idiot that said everyone should get a refund?

You want a refund? You can have it. It's called RETURN THE PRODUCT.

I don't know what the big deal is. Yeah, you paid $200 for a phone that you are demanding works with however way you hold it. Oh what, it doesn't work the way you want it? What, you paid 200 bucks (you people make it sound like you bought a yacht) and you are entitled to have it make you breakfast in bed?

Return it. Get your $200 back. No contract termination fees within the first 30 days. And buy a stupid Droid.

I paid more than USD $8400 for the 12 units I bought, plus two flights tickets to to London to pick them up. A little more than $200, right?

Jobs also sent one final message, encouraging the customer to "retire, relax, enjoy your family. It is just a phone. Not worth it."

First correct statement Jobs made. The phone the customer bought was not worth the price -- since it can't be used as a phone...

Relax is right.

Ask yourself this:
Is it more important to you to make a major purchase on the first day and have headaches for weeks because of unpublished issues with the product or to wait a few weeks and know that the purchase you are making is truly worth it?

If you like having things on day 1 and are that tight with money, these things might happen. Get used to it. Be more responsible with your purchases and stop b!tch!ng about every little thing that you didn't know about because you couldn't wait. You are needlessly stressing yourself out and pissing everyone else off. If there is a major issue, they'll fix it.

For those ready to complain that it should work perfectly on day 1, welcome to the real world. Everything is made by humans. Mistakes are made. You ever make a mistake or not notice something that was wrong? Thought so. Grow up.
