It's not a sin to have ports in the back, at least outside of the Apple religion.

And like I said, the design of the laptop prevents ports from being placed on the back. I for one am grateful that Apple doesn't use those crap-hinges PC-manufacturers use.

The professional and high-end consumer market for audio equipment will never eliminate FireWire and just use USB 2.0.

And that is why the Macbook Pro has firewire and the macbook doesn't.

The macbook is like a small macbook pro, this would eat macbooks pro sells, what can do apple against that fact? remove firewire from the consumer notebook, and left it only on the prosumer notebook.

This way prosumers would buy macbooks pro and consumers macbooks

FireWire isn't just about video. In the pro audio world the new MacBook Pros aren't a proven choice at this point in time. Why? Because Apple has apparently used the same crappy FireWire chip in the latest model that exhibited severe problems earlier this year:

Who in their right mind would seriously consider buying a MBP that might not work 100% with their "pro" equipment?
Is it possible that apple success the last few years have been a coincident and pure luck? Or when do they release the real PRO machines?

Because smartphone is not a replacement for a computer (or vice versa)?

You mean: "A smartphone is not a replacement for a laptop" - USABILITY

And I say: "A pretty slab of aluminium is not a replacement for a real computer" - USABILITY

Excuse me, but unless I'm mistaken (I'M NOT!!!) a lot of Apple computers have ports in the back. The only ones that don't are the newest Laptops (last couple generations)!

Even now, the Mac Mini and Mac Pro have ports in the back. Why don't you try saying stupid stuff somewhere else?

... FW does have lots of hi-end uses. Which is why their hi-end laptop still supports FW. ....

And if that FireWire doesn't work 100% on the MBP what FOOL is going to buy it to do "pro" audio?

See my previous posts. The MBP is not a viable option for FireWire audio at this point in time. Give it up...

The MacBook "Pro" is just an expensive consumer computer.

I'm seriously beginning to think that these people aren't just someone whose opinion differs, but they have set a goal to be apologetic and defend anything apple does. Including re-introducing sub par FW chipsets.
They really don't have a clue, but think that it's okay, as long as there is a single, sub par port, that looks "sort of the same".

*Sigh*.... phones and computers are two different things with different uses. You might as well whine because an axe is not a replacement for a fork, or vice versa. It would make about as muh sense.

And what is your definition of "real computer"?

And if that FireWire doesn't work 100% on MBP what FOOL is going to buy it to do "pro" audio?

So, how exactly would a MacBook then be a viable option, if MacBook Pro is not?

Show me the Apple laptops with ports in the back. (not OLD!)

Check this stuff out (in general) and tell me USB is used on modern cams.

If you didn't know i-link is same as FW... Anyway, Steve Jobs would sell his soul to devil to cover up their screw ups. Its your own fault if you believe him. Please show me even a prosumer cam or deck that uses USB and works with mac.

1. The MacBook Pro is way over priced. There is nothing "Pro" about the MacBook Pro over the MacBook apart from it has FireWire.

2. The MacBook is more than powerful enough to do video editing, rendering and audio editing. Everything a Pro would do, they could do on a MacBook.

3. The MacBook is smaller and more portable.

4. Consumer level equipment has FireWire - whether it is a consumer video camera, hard drive or audio equipment.

Just because something has a "Pro" tag on it, doesn't mean it is a professional laptop.

The MacBook suits my needs perfectly - I'm a student. I need portability. But I have a FireWire 16 Channel mixer for doing demos with my band. The new MacBook won't allow this.

Same applies to GarageBand and iMovie - consumer equipment for these applications is generally FireWire.

Just another opinion

IMHO Firewire is definitely not dead with Firewire S1600/3200 just being released to compete against USB 3.0. I think :apple: just looked at the MB market and realized the MAJORITY of MB owners do not use/need Firewire, hence its removal. While I do sympathize with those who use the MB as a lightweight replacement for a MBP, I sincerely think :apple: thoroughly thought this decision through. Yes, :apple: may lose a few customers, but the MAJORITY of MB users will barely know it is missing.

So how exactly would it be one bit better in MacBook has FireWire? I mean, it too would be using that sub-par controller? And I have not argued about MacBook Pro's FW-implementation, I have argued about removal of FW from the MacBook.

They really don't have a clue, but think that it's okay, as long as there is a single, sub par port, that looks "sort of the same".

But all would be fixed if that same sub-part port was slapped on the MacBook?

You going in circles? We already know the new MacBook isn't an option since it doesn't have FireWire.

Any other questions?

The TI chipset is pretty much a standard, but Apple is apparently to cheap to use it. The earlier MBs and MBPs used them...

Why do you insist on using pro-cameras on a frigging CONSUMER-laptop? Sheesh....

So to summarise the impeccable logic of the Apple apologists on this thread:

- firewire is old technology, so how come it's on the more advanced laptop

- according to Jobs, all camcorders these days use USB, which is demonstrably untrue

- buy a USB-to-firewire lead, which doesn't exist for macs

- firewire is for pros only, which contradicts the 'old technology' justification and ignores those customer segments who aren't pros or are poor pros

- this is transitional pain like the switch from floppy disc to cd-drives, except those with firewire haven't been offered any alternative (let alone superior alternative) unlike those who had floppies but switched to CDs

- not enough room for a firewire port, but there is in some equally small-form PC laptops

Have I missed out any?

Why can't the anti-firewireists just admit the plain and simple truth?

- this was a marketing decision to differentiate the Macbook from the Macbook pro and drive more sales to the latter
- they could have opted for much sounder means to differentiate the two (adding more features like eSATA to the Macbook Pro)
- they didn't because that would mean a lower profit margin
- Jobs' factually incorrect riposte shows how out of touch they are with significant sections of their customer base

IMO, with a severe global recession about to happen, this decision will bite them on the as* and deservedly so. Will look into hackintosh for my next 'mac' purchase

I think the last Apple notebook to use ports in the back was the PB G4 Titanium—something like 5 or 6 years ago.

In case you didn't know, we are discussing the removal of FW from the MacBook, not MBP FW-implementation. When I said that "get a MBP if you want FW", and you whined how "MBP is not an option since it uses a crappy controller!". Well, how exactly would it help if MB had FW then? I mean, it too would use the same crappy controller?

At least try to make sone sense here.
