With a campus like that, why not have plant "mini tours" (where mini tour means a tour with zero chance of showing any new technology) attracting tourists to "come and see"... then the "Apple Store" would simply be the one on site at the new campus.

Of course, allowing a bunch of non-Apple people into their building is a major security risk and decidedly non-Apple (more like a Hershey thing to do) and would thus probably never happen. Also, it would likely frequently be a huge distraction to Jobs and the other Apple employees and thus a bad idea... oh well, I guess I just shot down my own idea :(

I'll bet the guy asking for an apple store, and the lady asking for wifi both felt pretty stupid on the car ride home...

Sure, cover the entire facility with solar panels and get maybe 5% of your energy needs.

If you listen to the actual video, he says... 'natural gas and other sources'.
I'm sure it will be able to use/convert to solar as it becomes more cost beneficial.

This is pretty cool. I always loved the Main campus anyways. Walking through the main lobby into the huge courtyard is pretty amazing.

yayuh. The Cupertino Channel. As a resident of Cupertino, this sounds cool. I welcome free wifi though I'd probably take my Comcast internet anyday. However, it's nice to have free wifi when AT&T sucks balls around here.

BTW, I still can't get it out of my head that HP is leaving Cupertino. That means there's only 2 tech giants here, and I've always regarded that land as HP-land simply because my mom worked there for 20 years as I grew up.

And the battle with Google continues! They just announced their new building!

Poor Steve just has to stand there listening to these Council people grovel, sleaze and weasel Free Wifi, Apple Stores and money out of him.

Poor Steve, are you freaking kidding me?
AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHA!!

I think that's the funniest ironic thing I've read in years! Thank You! :D

Hell, free WIFI or an Apple Store for a city the size of Cupertino is CHUMP CHANGE to Apple or compared to the cost of this massive project.

How embarrassing for Apple to be so CHEAP with billions of dollars in the bank while I'm sure there are still tons of unemployed people even in Cupertino.

I'm not saying Apple owes WIFI to Cupertino by any stretch and I'm sure it will get approved anyway, but I don't blame the politicians for representing their constituents and asking the question, "What's in it for us?" That's what they're elected to do, not to lick Steve Jobs boot, bow before him, and stand there slobbering over his City Council "keynote."

By the way, the design looks amazing. My first thought was that it almost looks like what would happen if Apple re-built the Pentagon! :)

They should do a combination of solutions.

All that roof space would be good for the solar panels and all that land would be good for a few windmill generators as well.

And let see how ugly we will turn that campus into...

If you all do a little research the free wifi deal would be in exchange for tax breaks at the local level. It's not, "free."

Michael - As a suggestion, not a command, I would let the conversation go with KnightWRX. He/she woke up on the wrong side of their french canadian mattress. From my experience (and this is not a generalization, but simply a recap of my experiences), my interactions with french canadians is that they love to argue for no apparent reason. I don't know if it's because they are the red headed stepchild of canada (their two failed referendum attempts), or they speak quebecois (slang) vs Parisian French and they find this insulting somehow. I have yet to arrive at any definitive conclusion that accurately encapsulates their argumentative nature.

None-the-less, take his/her drivel for less than it's actually worth and carry on with your day.

Too funny! It's amusing to see people get so worked up over nothing.

Wish I was young enuff to work for Apple; that would be a great place to be.

Oh yeah, Cupertino LOVES this deal. Let's reap all the tax money and fame, but be happy that it is on the other side of 280, 5" from the city border. Let Sunnyvale deal with those 12,000 people and get nothing in return!

I do wish Apple would quit playing all these silly artistic games (i.e. almost unfixable iMacs) and give us useful products.

Totally dude.

iphone
iMac
ipod
ipad
MacBooks
icloud
itunes
Time Machine
Airport Express

Nothing on that list "useful" and silly artistic games!

No there are not "tons of unemployed people" in Cupertino, very few infact, the city is just too expensive to live in.

And more importantly do we really all think Google is providing "free" Wi-Fi? Yea, free so we can eavesdrop on everything you are doing and better refine our algorithms/revenue enhancement streams.

Remember anybody who has to claim to "do no evil" must have thought about it a lot.

I worked in a nearly circular building, and while they look great on paper, in practice, they suck. It was a cool building, until I had to interact with different groups and whoever they were, the next meeting always seemed to be at the other side of the ring. Running around like that gave the place the charming title of 'Habitrail', and people, when being urged to 'dress up/down' would sometimes showup with whiskers glued under their noses.

Nice place to work. Got my exercise... The 'courtyard' there wasn't a place to hangout though which would have been great... Oh well...

Sometime, doing things just because they look good isn't worth it. Take the iPhone 4 and the metal ring/antennae idea...

Anyway, you go Steve. Hope you are around to see it finished.

Verging 1 billion+ upwards probably.  will still have lots of coin left in the purse afterwards

(Haven't read through entire thread, so not sure if someone's already mentioned this).

They'll have plenty of coin left plus the fact that they would no longer be renting out a bunch of office space in the surrounding area. And one day, they may sell the original 1 Infinite Loop and even further along after that they'll sell this new place when they have a orbiting headquarters around Earth.

Buying > Renting

I enjoyed my time at Apple but it was just like every other job I've ever had.

I hear it's not if you're part of teams that fail. MobileMe for instance got their asses torn a new hole. Now, to be at the top of Apple, in that core team of engineers, that must be nice life...but still under huge amounts of pressure.

thank you! As much as I use Google's services, I know they're plotting something, lol. With so many services that are free, they're just tying us into their ecosystem and then they'll pull the nice comfy rug out from under us. Maybe that or maybe they just envision a future where ads are everywhere...wait a sec...
