Out of curiosity, I wonder how many of the trees will be apricot, how much they’ll produce, and what they’ll be used for. Some CA towns are known for avocado festivals and others artichokes.

What if there was an annual Cupertino Apricot Days. That would certainly give back to the community by giving the city back a part of their identity and history.

I think they really intend to plant hemp in the courtyard.

You would think they would have planted Apple trees instead.

I thought the "we pay taxes, that's enough" bit was quite arrogant. A better answer would've been "this extra building capacity will enable us to hire more of your citizens to our corporate positions, which means decent wages and job creation for the city. Sure, we could do free wifi, but we'd rather keep a few more of the citizens of this region employed."
.

Take another look at the video. He covered that. Plus, moving all those satellite location employees (not all in Cupertino right now) into Cupertino and increasing numbers to 12-13,000 is not a bad deal for having them spend their own money putting up a building on land they already own, that is already zoned for that purpose, and is currently largely vacant.

I do share your distaste for billionaire team owners wanting the public to buy them a building and let them get all the proceeds, but that is clearly not the case here.

Because there are alot of Asian people in Cupertino. Seriously, what is up with people having an issue with this?

Seriously. These are also the same people I have seen who support Wiki leaks and were critical of Arizona immigration law. Lots of hypocrites.

Moving employees to one central location would be amazing. Going from Bubb to Infinite Loop is a pain in the butt.

Don't you think they've considered this? Design materials? Mounting systems? The myriad of engineering details facing such a complex project? Don't you think they'll adhere to the California construction codes relative to earthquakes, probably going above and beyond? Good grief.

There will be more to worry about than Apple's new facility should a magnitude 9.0 earthquake ravage the area.

I guess you aren't aware that this type of glass panel design are one of the most earthquake proof building architectures that exist. There are many of these types of buildings in Japan, and they've all survived the recent earthquake without any real damage. The concrete/bricks buildings however (like the type of structures many people in the US work in), developed many cracks and became unsafe (even if the exterior looked okay).

This was unveiled last night.

Council packets were compiled on Monday. This likely went through the P&Z board before it was presented to the council. City governments are required by law to have open meetings and records. In other words, even if Steve presented it last night, it was distributed to the council before hand and the information easily could have leaked out from there.

jobs is building a glass palace, nice...until the 9.0 magnitude earthquake hits right after it's completed.

brilliant steve.

you are not an engineer, dont worry i ll sway by your trailer park and explain it to you..

...what is it with the ****ed up comments here on Steve, jesus...

No, they are elected to govern equitably not try and extort free WiFi out of a company.

A company that is a constituent.

Then again, this is America where I have to "get mine" at any cost.

Cupertino is *lucky* that Apple isn't extorting the town for perks... most companies - especially sports franchises - would go to the government and ask them to pay them (tax rebates, building them new infrastructure) to locate in their city or county.

The city where I live just bought 2/3 of a *stadium* for their losing football team and gave them massive tax rebates for the next 50 years (yes, 50 years!) to stay.

It reminded me of that cheesy movie Aeon Flux.

Are they going to have razor grass and trees that shoot needles to keep spies away?

Hrm, better be careful there. You might be scheduled for dna recycling if you say too much about the office defenses... :p

Just a minor correction...

The current campus has quite a bit of underground parking, and their emergency power generators are down there as well.

This is because the land was so contaminated by the previous owners (Motorola, I believe) that they had to truck out an enormous amount of contaminated soil in order to make the place safe. So they just stuck in a parking garage under the IL1-4 buildings.

The Natives really need to get over the fact that they got conquered without ever having a chance to fight a war over their territory. English and the Europeen colonists are now the natives and the natives are just some ancient relic of a long disappeared civilization.
.

These datacenters will conquer the most knowledgable among us, reducing them to ancient relics. Incidentally, Sitting Bull temporarily escaped to Canada before he was driven south to die.

HAHA welcome to the internet, where everybody's a architect, civil engineer, electrical engineer, software engineer, patent lawyer, criminal lawyer, doctor etc...

Solar for sure, but there's little wind in Cupertino - wind generators would be inefficient.

If you believe some MR posters here, Steve is a blow hard and Apple makes too much wind about itself.

So, should be plenty to get those windmills going!

Also, in case of an earth quake this thing may just take off into the icloud
and land later.

Good for Apple and especially Jobs, I think they deserve a new campus. Great to see him so healthy too! :)

I'm sad to say he looks weaker and thinner than ever. His voice sounds tired. I wish him to get better really soon.

Love how in these artist rendered pictures there are tones of trees all around. The building is surrounded by miles of the forest primeval and yet when the actual thing gets built those wonderful green trees will never exist.

Free WiFi

"what will you give us? i want free wifi"

typical political whore. i want to take and offer nothing.

"will the building be to code?"

no, we want people to die.

are you serious? these are the people in charge?

Does it mean that Apple's address won't be 1-Infinity Loop anymore?

That was a damm cool address name.

I think you misread my post. You are agreeing with me.

Not as mature trees, no. That's obvious.

Likely and could have don't support the OP. Read his post about falling stock prices, which would have gone back at least a week.

I agree 100%. Steve is absolutely right in saying that Cupertino should be the ones providing the free wi-fi with all the taxes Apple must be paying.

How typical of a government body to ask its people "what's in it for us?" instead of "what can we do for you?"

Yeap. Because for all business people local communities are top priority. Thats why they all moved to China.
