At least now they still at least pretend that Macs and OSX matter, even a little.
that warm, fuzzy feeling of future debates with PC users is slowly dying :(

My latest Mac is sitting one shelf up from the BDp. Press one button on my remote to switch between them.
*shakes head in disgust*

Nor is it a particularly lively horse either, since the realities of history illustrate that there have been attempts made to converge TV and the PC for quite awhile now.

Looking just at Apple's retail offerings, LEM quickly reveals the Macintosh TV, from October 1993.

Yep, 17 years ago.

Sure, we can try to excuse this effort by saying that it was before its time, such as because media delivery required more computational horsepower ... but it ran on a 68030 CPU at a whopping 32MHz, so its easy to see that that technology impediment excuse was OBE'ed a decade ago.

So what's been the other hold-ups by which today there's supposedly "No Excuse" possibly remaining?

Even if we want to say that its just Steve Job's big ego, all that means is that Apple Inc. isn't willing to go that route. This still doesn't stop 3rd Party aftermarket offerings, such as Axiotron's Modbook. Since some adherents here have even stated that they're willing to paying extra for BD, then why hasn't some innovative businessman responded to that consumer demand by bringing that product variant to market?

-hh

what is interesting to note - is that SJ was not even in Apple when that awsome looking MacTV was bought out in 1993 ;) SJ rejoined Apple in 1996! so we can still see where SJ will draw the line or not.

i do not believe mixing a conventional computer + TV is a good way to go - its not worth mixing them, that is why the :apple:TV, etc has been produced (even if it is crap ;) ).

Well, I've mixed 'em. 2 Minis, 2 TVs, 2 EyeTV tuners, all sorts of cables. I need more tuners, though.

Statements of "success" will be withheld until I see how fast internet helps. Installation tonight.

Don't agree. People want physical copies of their media and the infrastructure for Blu-Ray quality streaming won't be around for another 5-10 years.

Also if you look at Blu-Ray sales they keep going up and up, for example Iron Man 2 took 52% market share for DVD and BD combined for it's first week. Blu-Ray is far from history.

i agree, books now are so easy to buy online, but look at how many book stores are still open? maybe in the FAR FAR future when internet connections are 10GBit BD's will be history but then we will probably have holographic cubes.

physical media will never dissapear

Hopefully this "Back to the Mac" event has a mention of Blu-ray. I'm not holding my breath but it'd be nice...
i am glad Apple have taken this initative - and the title "Back to the Mac" fills my heart with joy! tells me that their attention is still with their Apple computer line.

fingers crossed we hear about BD. (i am also hoping for 11.6" MBA)

But no one can tell you anything, Steve-O, because you know all, just like your little clones and shills on here.

Amiga kicked Apple's ass from day one until the last gasp years and it's long gone. Apple OS kicked Microsoft's ass from day one and it's almost gone.

The pity is you won't accept it until your own April 30th 1945 day in your Cupertino bunker. But such is the fate of all leaders who refuse to listen to their most vociferous critics and consumers.

:apple:

Hey, you need to warn everyone of Apple's demise in the thread about Apple's stock surpassing $300. Call Wall Street too and pass on your foresight. I believe you and I am in the process of selling all my Apple stuff including my iPhone 4 for the awesome looking Windows 7 phone. I am glad you post here so that I know what computing products to buy. Thanks Man.

Wow, now hp is incorporating 3d.

http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/01/hp-unleashes-envy-17-3d-hp-envy-14-beats-edition-and-specially/

Didn't think this would be implemented in a laptop so soon with the lack of content, but still pretty cool considering a sub 2k price.

are you kidding me? 3d laptops have been out for the longest time, FFS the G51 3D models (yes MORE THAN 1 on the same line) is DISCONTINUED ALREADY and replaced by the G53JW

http://www.excaliberpc.com/595465/asus-g51jx-3d-15.6-notebook-replaced.html

as usual HP is slow and stupid when it comes to the latest tech, they are always late to the game

First of all you need to calm the hell down. I think you've taken too many redlines FFS. It looks like those models were announced/released in nov09-jan10 with the new G51JX-3DE in July. I didn't realize 10 months ago was considered ancient. They are mainly targeting 3d gaming rather than blu-ray as a lot of those models still had dvd drives. I've also never looked at an asus computer before and don't pay attention to the latest windows machines since I've been content with my macbook pro. I just happened to stumble onto the envy from a youtube video. The craze for 3d has only started to became popular after ces this year, so hp can't be that slow. If hp moves slow by incorporating 3d blu-ray, apple must be moving at a glacial speed with their pos superdrive. Oh wait, physical media is dead and you must be one of the sheep who is completely satisfied with apple tv and 720p, right?

Actually pr5owner has been one of the few complaining about the lack of BD on Macs.

Laptops are actually a halfway-decent place to put 3D, unlike large screen TVs. One user, small screen, static positioning....means they can more easily incorporate 3D that doesn't require glasses. See the DS-3D from Nintendo.

yes BD Rom's (if not BDRW drives)
+multi card reader
+eSatap
+USB 3 (and more than 2 freaking ports)
+Decent webcam (the isight is 0.3Megapixels, most new laptops are 1.3-2 and are capable of 720p video)
+FW
+replacable parts

i guess the line of apple laptops just isnt made for productivity

its hard to find 9.5mm BDRWs for a reason ;)
+multi card reader
you have SD readers, what more do you want :D
this will never happen. adds extra costs, more space, and direct competition with Light Peak that will be out VERY soon.
+USB 3 (and more than 2 freaking ports)
when the time is right - i believe apple will put it into the mother ship first (i.e. MacPro) then go down the line. because there is no Intel specsheet for it for the MP thats what the wait is from

MB & MBPs have had 1.3MP webcams for quite some time.
FW vs USB (page 6) - there clearly has to be 1 winner. obviously that is USB, no need to support the general consumers with something that only <10% will need. there is a MacBook "Pro" for that.
+replacable parts
RAM, HDD, CPU, SuperDrive, LCD Panel, logic board, battery, all replaceable - what else do you want?

USB 3.0 first on the MP when the time is right?
LOL! This would mean USB 3.0 will not be available on any Mac for the next one and a half years!

You realize that the Mac Pro just has been updated in August?
But the thing came without eSATA nor USB 3.0, despite that the space excuse has no merit on this beast.

18 months passed since the the last MP refresh, and all what they came up with, was plastering new processors into the same old architecture with the same old interfaces and programming drivers for exactly two graphics cards! That's how deep Apple's Mac Pro commitments go...

I remember a time not long ago when Apple was THE industry leader when it came to implementing new interfaces into their flagship desktop line.
Now we are lucky if we are getting the new technology within three years after introduction...

dont you think that they would have already done it by now if they were serious? i am not stating that it will happen, just putting ideas out there. another possible scenario is that there are not that many users who would benefit from USB3.0 (and the amount of available USB3 HDDs is not that great)

apple has changed, they are now consumer based - no longer prosumer based. :( it sucks

I don't think it is a big deal not having Blu-ray on Mac. If it is a must have one can always run Windows in boot camp and use an external drive. Or just use a Windows machine. I think it is hardly worth knocking Steve over it. His company, his way. Not much to do about it. I can see his reasoning and is it that hard to think that if the company was yours you would do it different? From his place is is a savvy business move to keep Blu-ray out. It is always all about the money is it not? Why make less when one can make more?

Who needs BD now. Netflix will be streaming 1080P and 5.1 digital sound on the PS3 beginning October 18th. Roku Box also has 1080P streaming. And everyone thought Steve was wrong - LOL.

http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/10/14...coming-no-disc-1080p-51-dolby-surround-sound/

I use Netflix too, and, I have high-speed internet, and, I still have trouble streaming at the required rate. I'm not sure whose fault it is, but, my session always ends up down-rating to lower quality when I run out of buffered movie. Fact is, BD looks great, works, and is cheap now.

Other comments: OWC has some external BD drives. Anyone know if they play average protected BD's?

You will be able to watch SOME titles in 1080p with crap bitrate. Of course these 1080p movies will be like 5 years old or something since there are ZERO new releases on netflix streaming.

Oh and FYI, Steve wasnt right about crap. Apple owns ZERO content and as long as the movie studios decide to keep BD around streaming will always be second rate.

Bitrate is key.

As long as the number of consumers with sustained 50 Mbps internet connections stays an infinitesimal percentage of the overall population, BD has a bright future.

Note that "sustained" means that you and all of your neighbors can simultaneously maintain a 50 Mbps stream without dropouts. For many families, it would mean that two or more 50 Mbps streams for different televisions could run at the same time.

I do. I want to burn high-def movies on my imac easily. I don't want a third party burner hooked up to my imac and use some other program to burn my imovie. Just import, quick edit, add titles, pop in bd disc and burn. Just like I can do now with regular dvds.

Well with iDVD said to be axed from iLife 11, you'll need third party burning software so might as well use the stuff thrown in with a third party burner. ;)
