The city I live in ( Favre country) is up to speed with current technology and I never have any lag with streaming video via Netflix and Amazon on Demand. I use Macs for work because it's the best OS on the planet. If I need BD, I have a PS3.

Please SJ, stick to your guns and don't announce BD availability on Oct 20th.

Since when did you become a troll? I thought you were one of the good posters. :(

Good for you if DVD is good enough. I don't like installing software on 5 discs, nor do I like having to burn content onto several discs to make archives.

My PS3 won't help in either of those scenarios.

At the very least, we should have Blu-Ray BTO. (And 15" expresscard, FW3200 and USB2 for that matter...)

Sorry, bad choice of words ( I edited original post). It just gets frustrating listening to all the whiners dissing SJ because of this BD issue. True, people should have a choice. I understand that Video professionals could use the larger capacity storage of BD. However, for me and my business colleagues, we use our Macs for work and are just happy to finally have a system that "just works" ( I hate to use the phrase again but its true for us coming from a world of let down after let down with windows). At the end of the day if I want to watch a BD movie, I do so on my dedicated BD player in my home theater. I spend so much time working on my Mac that the last thing I want to do is be in front of it for games or movies. So we'll see come October 20th. Maybe SJ will have some good news for people in this forum :)

Well with iDVD said to be axed from iLife 11, you'll need third party burning software so might as well use the stuff thrown in with a third party burner. ;)

Man I am behind in burn rumors. If they remove iDVD then how will u even burn DVDs? Or will u not be able to and that's the point? What the heck is jobs problem with physical media?

No need for language. Chances are the disk burning capabilities will be integrated directly into iMovie. It's just not going to be a separate app anymore. If they do drop any burning capabilities, I'll be upset too, though I rarely have used it. Apple knows better than to do that unless they're ditching optical drives altogether, which I would like, but I think it's too early even for Apple to do that probably.

Well thats ok, then. Even better. Never understood why imovie just wouldn't burn the movie itself and why we had to switch to idvd to do so. No offensive on the "h" word, its not much of a swear where I come from but will edit anyway.

P.S. Why do people in general hate optical drives. You wrote you would like them to drop it. I can see why in a notebook, more room for bigger battery or just make it lighter, etc. But why not have one in a desktop?

I don't hate optical drives-- they will be around for a long time. However, I like the MBA approach of having an outboard optical drive instead of wasting space and weight inside the notebook/laptop computer, for something that I use on maybe one out of every 20 days or so. For an MBP-sized device, I would much rather have two drive bays, one for SSD and one for high-capacity HDD.

Or swappable with a second battery, like many other laptops.

id agree with that - i only use optical media now for ripping movies/audio to my computer, or burning windows based programs. which isnt very often ;)

not going to happen IMO - apple put in the new non-removable batteries to allow for bigger capacities, adding the ability to add in another battery probably isnt optimal in their eyes. besides, 10hrs is enough :D

+1. I would like to have the option of replacing the optical drive with a SSD and having a slightly larger battery. Make Blu-Ray an option as well and everybody would be happy :D

While I'm exclusively editing in FCS (iMovie became pretty useless after Version 6...) I'm still heavily using iDVD to produce proof DVD's for my clients very quickly.

If Apple is going to restrict DVD burning to iMovie, I'm seriously considering to abandon the insanely neglected FCS for good and make the Premiere switch (Adobe Master Collection since I haven't upgraded my Design Premium yet).

I have no patience waiting for FCP 64-bit and DVDStudio BluRay support any longer! These Apple editing and authoring work flows have become way too cumbersome to bother with.

It's time to kiss Final Cut Pro goodbye and move on!

Blu-ray in Lion; now or never.

If Mr. Jobs finally realizes the necessity for Blu-ray implementation in Lion, I'm immediately buying another tower, only not a late 2009 nephalem quadcore like my purchase a few months ago but a top of the line 2.93 12 core.

If not, as soon as my current rendering project is finished, I'm divesting my company of everything Apple on eBay.

Hours away will tell.

Who needs BD now. Netflix will be streaming 1080P and 5.1 digital sound on the PS3 beginning October 18th. Roku Box also has 1080P streaming. And everyone thought Steve was wrong - LOL.

http://www.slashfilm.com/2010/10/14...coming-no-disc-1080p-51-dolby-surround-sound/

The average bitrate of the Netflix streaming is probably going to be 10mbps MAX whereas Blu-Ray bitrates are usually at least 20 mbps MINIMUM.

Resolution doesn't mean crap if it's compressed. You could stream 1080p with 5.1 over dial up if you compress it enough

Netflix and AOD movies still look great on my Draper Onyx screen and plasma displays. I have no issues with streaming here in Favre country. If I want to watch a BD I will simply play it in my PS3 or dedicated BD player. Physical media is an eye sore for my contemporary decor. I can't wait for PS3 games to all go the route of digital download. It's been so long since I bought a spool of blank DVD's or CD's. Face it, physical media will be a thing of the past soon.

Favre country, eh? How does his junk look in 1080p HD? :p

Lion and Apple Mac Air- Massive Fail

Now I've got to look for a 12-core PC tower (or better) and Apple just lost $10,000.

Lion? Lipstick on a pig. The iPadification of Mac OS.

Mackbook Air? Jobs attempt to make notebooks into a toy as useless and thin as he is.

And of course, his fetish with Blu-ray comes complete with no optical drive whatsoever to deliver content to clients. Useless.

Now we pro content creator users can finally leave. All several million of us.

The era is finally over. The mac, as far as creating pro content, is dead. I'll be divesting my entire company's mac inventory as soon as my current rendering project is finished.

Buh-bye.

:apple:

P.S. What did I expect from Willie Wonka? Sanity. Way too much to ask for.

Oh no Apple is going out of business like Amiga - LOL

Time for me to trade in my 13"MBP for 11.6" MBA.

Why do so many twist things so that any complaint is turned into "OMG, Apple will go out of business" - and then the twister argues against the twisted complaint and ignores the original.

Apple the "gadget maker" will continue to have huge sales at obscene profit margins (at least until the turtlenecked overlord does something that turns the tweens and teens against Apple).

Apple the "professional's choice" for audio/video applications is sounding its death rattle. When the obituary for Apple pro apps is written, 2010-10-20 will be the day that Apple pro went into a coma.

On the other hand, the new x64 support and native BD authoring in Final Cut Studio, and the new release of Logic Studio look very good for the pros.

Are you driving on an icy road, because you just did a 360.

"Apple the "professional's choice" for audio/video applications is sounding its death rattle. When the obituary for Apple pro apps is written, 2010-10-20 will be the day that Apple pro went into a coma."

then....

"On the other hand, the new x64 support and native BD authoring in Final Cut Studio, and the new release of Logic Studio look very good for the pros."

Pot, meet kettle.

[Aiden says:] "On the other hand, the new x64 support and native BD authoring in Final Cut Studio, and the new release of Logic Studio look very good for the pros."

Once again, I'm amazed at how some MacRumours readers can look at the most bald-faced satire or joke and take it literally.

- There is no x64 version of Final Cut....

- There is no native BD authoring in Final Cut....

- There is no new release of Logic Studio....
