There really is no point to physical media. And no point to offer dead technology as an option.

Honestly at this point i am sure you are just posting in order to annoy people. No person on the planet could possibly be such a fanboy, uninformed, or flat out ignorant to think, that as of today their is no need for physical media.

But "SSD" is a subset of "HDD", not a distinct category.

For example, to find SSD at Newegg the path is "Home > Computer Hardware > Hard Drives > SSD":

theres also a Solidstate Hard drive (hybrid HDD)

Sitting on plane at gate. Getting ready to watch The Town on my iPhone. There really is no point to physical media. And no point to offer dead technology as an option.

Why fly on a plane at all? Streaming your body's particles is the future. Oh, yeah, no-one can do it now, and it'll cost more per mile when everyone can do it, and there will be tight restrictions on how and where you can go to places, but why are you wasting your time on dead technology like physical vehicles!?

Just ignore him.

Momentus XT - Yeah!

Actually, I've upgraded two of my laptops to 500 GB Momentus XT drives - hybrid 500 GB rotating media with a 4 GB SLC self-learning solid state media cache. (They were $85 at Newegg recently.)

Helps boot times a lot (not as much as a real solid state disk ( ;) ), but helps). Everything's pretty snappy if you use the same set of applications, but if you switch workflows you notice that it takes a while for the new workflow to get snappy.

Just started a download of that Nine Inch Nails farewell concert given away for free, cobbled together from three concerts and edited together by fans. Probably a lot of them on Macs. It's well known Trent Reznor himself uses Macs.

Only I won't be able to watch it on a Mac (at least not in the highest quality).

Thanks for the link - time to load a VM with a torrent client and do a 25 GB legal download!

Glad that my ISP doesn't have a GB/month cap. :D

Its obvious after 4000 plus pages very few people still don't get it. I like to embrace new technology and not latch on to old technology. Selecting movies from an on screen menu and streaming them to any display in the house is much more attractive than a pile of jewel cases on a desk, a wall, or on the floor. Not to mention it looks pretty cool when entertaining/hosting house parties. It has nothing to do with being lazy or fat and not wanting to get up off the couch to insert a disc. (Speaking of "fat," I am fortunate to not have any weight issues and its really sad that others here have made comments about fat people. I have overweight colleagues and associates that are the best human beings I have ever met. It just goes to show you how insecure some people really are which is typical of self proclaimed "know it alls." I have had a few "know it alls" work for me and I really enjoyed telling them I no longer needed their services - that's one of the perks of being the company owner. I often wondered why these "know it alls" are employees if they really know so much.)

That is fine, you can enjoy your inferior product while the rest of us will enjoy the highest quality video and audio available. Some people want macs to be the best of the best with the highest quality. Others are just fanboys who will recycle what ever Steve tells them too like little lap dogs.

The highest quality video and audio "looks pretty cool when entertaining/hosting house parties.". I guess some people are either easily impressed or don't actually know what they are missing and will enjoy the lower audio and video quality that streaming has to offer.

I didn't realize a Draper Onyx set up was an "inferior product." Perhaps you should write some reviews for Home Theater Magazine.

Stop being obtuse, don't you get tired of it?

Let us know when the new tech comes, then, will ya? Because it is NOT here, yet.

Be the bleeding-edge beta tester all you want but the end-is-near hyperbole w/regards to physical media is ridiculous. And this is coming from someone who probably streams 90% of the content I watch.

How does Home Theater Mags rate the quality iTunes streams vs BD? It doesn't matter if your home theater is the best money can buy 'cause if you put inferior quality into it you'll get inferior quality out of it.

I took my niece and nephew to see Narnia over the holidays. I don't go to the movies much because I prefer to watch them in the comfort of my home theater sans noise of others and people forgetting to turn off cell phones. Anyways, aside from the fact that my Draper Onyx setup was dwarfed by the three story AMC screen, I was surprised at the similarities in image quality. In projection home theaters, the screen that the image is projected onto plays a more important role than the projector. A high end screen like an Onyx will make an image from a low end projector look good, but a high end projector with a low end screen will look like dog doo doo. When I stream HD movies onto my Onyx, people cannot believe I am running a projected image. So I am not sure how I am getting the inferior quality that you refer to. I suggest you take a trip to your local home theater specialty store and witness first hand the visual quality of a top notch set up. And I am not talking about some pop up fold away screen you see vendors toting at a trade show.

Seriously, what does your projector have to do with the source anyway ? A BD would look that much better than an inferior stream, even on your Onyx Draper except if your setup has poor quality to begin with. Is that what you're telling us ? Ok, now I get it, you bought a poor quality setup, so you're telling us BD would just be wasted, iTunes quality is the best you can hope to achieve.

Ah, everything is clear now.

Obviously you don't get it. I really wish you would stop assuming what others are saying. Seriously, get over it. This thread is like people who argued cars would never replace horses. And great job at keeping your word.

We do get it - in spite of spending a lot of money on your home theatre, you're content with downloading and watching over-compressed content on it.

We're fine with that.

But why argue that people should be denied the ability to watch the best that's widely available now, and for the next few years at least?

That's what we don't get.

I never argued that people be "denied the ability to watch the best that's widely available now, and for the next few years at least." The reality is, (drum roll please) YOU ARE NOT BEING DENIED! Say it, "I AM NOT BEING DENIED!" Again, "I AM NOT BEING DENIED!" Everyone, "WE ARE NOT BEING DENIED!" I'll say it,"linux2Mac IS NOT BEING DENIED!"

Is SJ standing guard with an AK-47 ready to gun down anyone that dares to cross a bridge over a hot lava pit to a stock pile of all the BD players in the entire world ? (BTW - that's a rhetorical question. And if anyone has trouble with that word like they did "harbinger," feel free to post the Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition for all to see. Thanks.)

If you have that set up then you would benefit even more than others using blu ray instead of streaming media. Second the inferior product is not the theatre set up but the media being played on it. Any author or contributor to any decent home theatre magazine or even a best buy employee with basic knowledge would laugh in the face of anyone claiming streaming media was as good as a blu ray.

With such a nice setup it should be able to resolve the difference in quality between a stream from iTunes and movie on Blu-ray shouldn't it? I'm not saying the iTunes stream has to look like crap on your setup I'm just saying that the BD should look better because it's a higher quality source.

As for going to a home theater store to see a proper setup? I don't need to. I've been working w/production quality HD material for a number of years now so I know what it looks like before it gets crushed down into a distribution format. Not trying to sound snobby or anything but that's just the way it is. My first time seeing HD on Sony's top of the line production monitor or 4k Red footage projected in a production quality screening room put my jaw on the floor and there just isn't anything on the consumer side that can match that, IMO.

This thread is more like people saying if you want to buy a car *today* you should buy an all electric car because the internal combustion engine is old tech and on its death bed. While a replacement to the internal combustion engine has to come about eventually that doesn't mean that buying a electric vehicle today is inherently the better choice.

I do have a BD player hooked up to it. And I do not deny that BD's look phenomenal when I watch them. When I am waiting to receive new BD's from Netflix I watch streams - and those are pretty darn impressive too. I do not own one BD and refuse to invest in BD's after losing a lot of money invested in my DVD collection. Remember, SJ is not denying me the ability for playing BD movies in my home theater. I have options. I am free to choose. I choose Apple for my headache free computing and not for my home theater needs.

Like a few other posters here have said, "let's just agree to disagree." :)
