Please don't get too excited over nonsensical ramblings by a shrill journalist. I can remember all the high hopes for firewire that never came true. It was never used for anything other than disk interface and video, ThunderBolt will probably follow suit. Besides, Mac Minis are always going to be made with cheap laptop components and underpowered/obsolete processors/chipsets/memory, not exactly the best route to take for powerful multiprocessing.

So far my Mini Server has turned out to be a fantastic replacement to my Dell Poweredge 1600SC. I am running 3 VM's on it without a hitch. I also had 3 VM's running on my Dell with Xen.

You're comparing Apples and Loquats

Is anyone surprised that a new MiniMac with a C2D with 3 MiB cache and up to 8 GiB of DDR3 1066MHz RAM can match a 2002-vintage Pentium 4 with max of 4 GiB of 266 MHz DDR ram and cpu caches as small as 512 KiB? (Especially if you consider that the C2D has Intel "VT Technology" to accelerate VM performance.)

At least for CPU speed. The I/O bandwidth of the nearly 10 year old Dell would crush the mini.

And, by the way, your virtual machines are pretty wimpy if you could run three of them on a 1600SC. A few weeks ago I upgraded my home Core i7 system from 12 GiB to 24 GiB because of severe paging running two VMs.

Not to mention the fact that 10 years ago the Dell 1600SC was priced the same as today's MiniMac Server.

ps: How about posting the configurations of the 1600SC and the MiniMac?

*Cough* *Cough* Linux! *Cough* Xen!

Of course they would be wimpy if I was running inefficient Windows server on my 1600SC, but I wasn't. I had a production web server, a mirror server to another off site web server, and a development server. It was smooth sailing with Xen and better sailing now with my Mini server. :)

I can't help you friendo. That's the price you pay with Windows.

Take a look at market share and installed base, and you'll find you're doubly wrong, Blu-Ray is outgrowing DVD, which is (was) the most successful format introduction ever. Not too surprising, as Blu-Ray is simply a better DVD.

Don't Parents love BR as the discs are scratch-proof? I know kids would scratch up a DVD in a matter of days...

As I said, some pretty wimpy VMs.

No, that's the price I pay for running a database server with an 8 GiB shared memory database cache.

And who said that my VMs are running Windows? Postgres x64 runs fine on Linux.

Mind describing your Apples and Loquats, anyway?

Good lord. I suggest you look at where DVD was 5 years into its lifespan, back in 2001. I've heard this argument before (at the time it was DVD vs VHS) and it's WRONG.

Yes, these sorts of arguments are always wrong, because technology advancements have accelerated the adoption rate timelines. As such, 5 years today is not equal to 5 years back in 2001.

We see a similar slight-of-hand in performance metrics in Hollywood with how they market their alleged successes with each year's films: it is always expressed in dollars, not physical ticketed admissions sold. Since the price of a ticket goes up every year, it takes progressively fewer tickets sold to "Break the Record". Which is why that as per by actual customer attendance Gone With The Wind is still #1.

*SIGH* Here is what I remember off the top of my head regarding the Dell which is now in storage.

Dell PowerEdge 1600SC (2004)
Dual 2.4GHz Intel Xeon, 4GB RAM, (2) 18GB SCSI HD, (4) 36GB SCSI HD

Mac Mini Server (2010)
2.66 GHz C2D, 8GB RAM, Dual 500GB HD

The Mac Mini is serving well (web, mail, file services), is taking up a much smaller foot print , is quiet, and using less juice. Okay, I am ready for your Apple is crap rant. ;)

Interestingly this BD thread has squeaked by the Verizon thread. But then again this thread is 9 months old where as the Verizon thread surpassed it in a matter of days.

It's possible that the attention span of the average iPhone user is shorter than that of the average user of Blu-ray media. More likely, however, is that the "squee" factor was much higher on a new toy than the "angst" factor of being denied Blu-ray compatibility.

I wouldn't mind a BDD on my new iMac. Oh, well. I don't even own any BDs, so it's not that important to me.

I laugh at your feeble clairvoyance. Need I remind you of your failed January 2009 prediction where you never made it to the dance. Once again you will be wrong. Light peak equipped Minis will be here soon enough.

As to your even more feeble clairvoyance, I do to it what your avatar is doing.

Just like other "futurists" who, like in "Bladerunner" foresaw aircars by 2019.

Or by 1975 at the latest because of the Jetsons in 1961.

Mankind may well NEVER see aircars. Ever. Or Martian colonies.

Certainly not top of the line minis with all current technology save a BD burner and a BD-equipped OS.

I wouldn't mind a BDD on my new iMac. Oh, well. I don't even own any BDs, so it's not that important to me.

You will, and it will be important to you.

Just a little update -- I have a huge movie collection and I agree about the conveniences of ripping although I still want Blu-Ray not because it's physical but because it offers the best quality. After at least one aborted attempt to rip all my DVDs (when it was obvious I'd eat up all my disk space), I decided disk capacities grew to the point it was worth trying again. I've got 8TB of storage to work with and it's going to be close but my gut feeling is I'll come up just short.

But anyway, the point now being that even in a discless world the Windows HTPC shines. It easily rips BDs into unaltered ISOs, and strips copy protection off DVDs with AnyDVD. And copies them to my 4-bay RAID array via eSATA. And plays all said media over HDMI to my receiver where I can still enjoy the 7.1 channel lossless sound and 1080p video on my 65" THX plasma.

Even in this discless world, a Mac just wouldn't cut it. An HDMI-equipped mini would come closest, but there's no way to play Blu-Ray disc ISOs and I'd have to forego eSATA in favor of firewire. All other Macs won't do HDMI/multichannel audio even when you take Blu-Ray out of the picture. Tsk tsk.

Blu-ray Bag of Hurt For Sony Too - LOL

Blu-ray is a bag of hurt even for Sony. And they invented Blu-ray. I almost fell out of my chair laughing so hard!

You guys should be thanking Steve for saving us Mac users this hassle instead of wishing his early demise (not going to name names) or giving him monikers like the dark turtle necked sith lord (again not going to name names). Some of you really need to wake up and smell the coffee. Mmmmm, it's soooo good (linux2mac's favorite is the Wake Up Blend from Trader Joe's).

If a patent fight is a 'bag of hurt' then Apple has been a bag of hurt many times over. I'm also not sure how Jobs is responsible for saving Mac users any hassle when the suit isn't about the format itself but specifically about Sony.

With the same logics iPhone is really big bag of hurt (Apple is denying to pay pantent royalties to Nokia for the very old and basic cell phone patents) for Apple and Apple should drop iPhone for good.

I'm angry to Apple, because it makes me to carry around another device (windows laptop or external bd) to playback bd.
I'm paying Apple tax to Microsoft, because I need Windows license to playback bd.

Tsk tsk. I don't think you read the articles you linked to. LG is trying to stop the PS3. not Sony's other Blu-Ray offerings, and not any other company's Blu-Ray offerings. Don't let reality get in the way though.

How can you smell the coffee with so much brown on your nose? ;)

PC Mag calls the new 15" MBP "the fastest shipping laptop to date" and the only "cons" listed are that it is "pricey" and "lack of Thunderbolt devices to take advantage of the new interface." I guess Apple is still cutting edge without BD. ;)
