i normally don't hop on ppl for this, but troll a little more why don't you?

Yes, Apple is controlling THEIR app store.

Why? YES, they are a business and are in it to make money for their shareholders.

Also, they want the user to have a great experience and sometimes, you have to control certain aspects to ensure the user experience is what you set it out to be. Look at Flash, Apple didn't allow it for a number of reasons (one of which was a lack of security) and now there was an article 2 days ago which talked about how hackers used flash to get into people's gmail accounts.

Imagine if Apple had allowed flash on their i-devices and someone hacked it? THEY would have lost money, would have spent THEIR time and energy fixing it.....and it's not their product!

So, i'm all for them keeping strict guidelines.

Don't pick on him. Can you blame him for hanging out here? Think of how boring it must be at winrumors.com.

With every passing day (and now with the imminent launch of iLion) it becomes more and more surreal to answer to my PC-using colleagues, when they ask why the Mac doesn't support BD.

There are many bad reasons for it, many fringe reasons for it and many AppleUniverse-centric reasons for it, but no real reasons for it.

Apple is now supporting cut&paste files in the Finder. How about some BD support then?

I would have considered the Wii U as a BD player, but as it seems it won't play movies, I'm not interested anymore.

Of course, I wouldn't get it unless it were multi region, the downfall of the PS3 and all BD players.

I am still waiting for a cheap multi region 3D BD player (with HDMI DSD).

I don't think the Wii U uses Blu-ray. I'm pretty sure it's a proprietary format that Nintendo created

A couple of years ago I bought a BD burner with HD DVD ROM support just because it was the last chance to get something compatible with everything even if faster burns were forthcoming and I don't own any HD DVDs.

I never use it because there's no playback software for the Mac.

What the **** does Jobs expect us to do with our ****ing HD video from iMovie and Final Cut

You can burn a blu ray via Toast or FCP. Few other programs as well. Viewing it is obviously the biggest hurdle. Have to take the disc to a blu ray player to check it out, like the PS3 or whatever you have.

It's weird that DVD studio doesn't support blu, unless I am mistaken.

Haha seriously. Except I thought the bill gates quote was even smaller like 256k.
Wikiquote tells that Bill never said that, it's just urban legend.
But seriously, for small scale indie videomaker bd is the only option for HD.
Once again couple weeks ago, I had a client, which I asked what format they want the final product; disc or files?
They asked what file format would work in every computer.
I had to say none.
Maybe flash would be the best option, but as a standalone file even that has problems. And how big percentage of macs can play windows media?
Does all versions of windows play h.264 without installing anything additional?
Then we decided to use dvd, since so many their clients would watch it with their laptop and so few have bd.

Once again this reminds me the good old days when we had standards that you could trust to work anytime & everywhere.
Now it's all about formats, regions, drm's etc.
Jobs said that 2005 was the year of HD. Wonder when it is that again...

It's not that no-one wants standards though, in fact I think almost everyone does. It's that everyone who can help towards making a standard wants the standard to be their standard!

I'm not sure how that problem is going to go away.

Macs not being able to play Blu-ray discs after five years is what's disgusting.

:apple:

Steve had a vision. No ports, no disks, no usb 3, no flash, he has so many marvelous things that wouldnt matter one bit if he used them. But he has visions. Amazing ones.

Being sarcastic of course : )

Visions, or delusions?

Well he is the genius of our time, they have to be visions. Apple could be so much more with an even higher market value, if he wasnt in charge, I guarantee it.

EDIT: I do not think he is a genius.

This is true. It's just a shame that his visions blind him to the needs of so many otherwise happy customers and exclude so many other potential customers.

To put it another way, removing sensible options removes the customers who need them, and irritates the customers who would like them, whilst making little or no difference to those who 'share his vision'.

They could be, but I'm not sure they would be. The best situation in my view would just be Steve Jobs and his visions but tempered with a little more humility and a little more willingness to quietly give options to those who desire them. It wouldn't mean destroying his vision, on the contrary it would be expanding the reach of Apple's products now in a way that would support his visions for the future. Instead he seems to want the future delivered prematurely at the expense of anyone who can't keep up. Which is almost everyone, because he's so visionary.

Steve Jobs is a bit like George Lucas, in the sense that both can do wonderful things as long as they have some serious adversaries and people who dare to say "no" to them.

Then when they are surrounded by "yes-men" and are basically indisputed, well.. they're not all that hot any more and we get a lot of revisions, special editions, new paradigms, CGI and laziness - but with plenty of vision.

Agreed on everything you said. Man I like the later parts of threads when the iSheep are mostly weeded out. You guys still use your brain.

Flash: Would make no difference if they offered an option, it IS going to be around for awhile. It DOES limit you sooner or later on an iDevice. Hence I would never own one again. Ports of course are lacking, and why only 1 phone? BS, they could offer 3 versions and each would sell in high numbers and they would make more money.

USB 3: Apple charges premium prices and it saves them a few cents probably by not adding it. Awesome. Jobs says USB 3 not taking off at this time..... uhhhh thunderbolt still has nothing for it I believe.

Blu ray: I mean 5 years now? What happens when the next format comes out? There will be another. Don't have these problems on the Windows machines since they are staying cutting edge and keeping up with tech.

Lion as DL only is disgusting, of course excuses are made by the mass of Apple fans and there lies the problem. Honestly no one should buy sh** from them. 2500 for a 17' laptop with those specs?? Well its thin I guess... iMac is decent but again no blu ray. Mac mini is niche, why not have a tower with a normal i7? Can't because you need to pay 2500 for a wretchedly overpriced mac Pro.

If he had someone to control his vision and temper it then they would be phenomenal, sadly I bet everyone at Apple is about brainwashed into his way of thinking. Sucks. :( in the post PC era since he got destroyed in the PC era with that rad strategy that a few high priced machines could take the market vs. everyone else. Someone needs to pass him a note that he will lose the post PC era as well with his strategy. It just fails.

He really does create a reality distortion field. Kudos on that.

I guess if you are perfectionist with a vision and too much power, it's pretty hard to leave your vision half way.

But since he can execute his vision (and have bigger profits) so much better with iOS devices, I just wish he would leave macs or at least OsX to some others to look after.
