Steve Jobs is a bit like George Lucas, in the sense that both can do wonderful things as long as they have some serious adversaries and people who dare to say "no" to them.

Then when they are surrounded by "yes-men" and are basically indisputed, well.. they're not all that hot any more and we get a lot of revisions, special editions, new paradigms, CGI and laziness - but with plenty of vision.

Yeah, whilst I think George Lucas gets way too much ridiculous criticism and I love all the Star Wars films (even the prequels and the cruelly-released-theatrically-Clone Wars 'pilot' eps-as-movie), I think one of the most valid criticisms against him is that he doesn't keep the original films out there a the same standard as the re-jigged ones. There would be far less hate out there if the 1977-1983 editions of Star Wars were included on the upcoming Blu-ray set, even with visible matt-lines and flakier effects.

I think it's a good analogy - an interesting footnote is that it was, of course, Lucas sold Pixar to Jobs. And as has been noted many times, Pixar release really some nice Blu-ray movies (it doesn't get any less ludicrous the more times you read that).

Blu ray: I mean 5 years now? What happens when the next format comes out? There will be another. Don't have these problems on the Windows machines since they are staying cutting edge and keeping up with tech.

I have no problem saying I love my mac. It's a great computer with a great OS. I love my iPad too, for what it is (which is nowhere near a replacement for a full desktop machine). They could just be that little bit better for a wider range (and number) of people with the kind of options you describe.

It's just what I say in my signature.... "I really wish Apple would use the option key a little more, and the command key a little less." If Apple could just replaced their tendency towards *compulsion* and replace it with encouragement instead, they'd make the likes of us so much happier at little-to-no cost to any of their other customers.

I love my MBP 13' as well. Fantastic computer, doesn't feel skimped on anywhere in quality. OS is fantastic, I like it far more than windows, but I dont hate on Windows by any means. Your sig is pretty much spot on and I believe the same. I really dislike a lot of what Apple does, and it downright makes no sense, almost as if it is run by mad scientist.

I like em 50% hate em 50%. Its a struggle lol. Hopefully one day they open the playbook up a little. Anyway well said sir.

I don't get it, why apple doesn't raise the pixel density of that to par with Airs.
Do they get bigger margins on Air or just simple want the customer not beeing able to playback dvd's if they want better resolution?
My step/half-father-in-law struggles in reading digital newspaper with his 13"mbp, but he needs dvd for his work and doesn't consider external dvd as convenient.

Great analogy. Both fear that by giving a customer an option, would somehow dim the greatness of them and their work
Maybe it's just a sign of low self-esteem deep inside...

I find it hard to believe Steve suffers from low self-esteem considering the company he founded is now worth "as much as Microsoft, HP, and Dell combined." Looks like lack of BD support isn't hurting Apple's growth.

Many people with low self-esteem "shouldn't" have low self-esteem - in fact it's sometimes what drives over-achievers.

Just like many anorexics think that they're fat - mental issues sometimes aren't aligned with reality....

I already have a PS3. That is my Blu-Ray player so its exclusion is not a deal breaker for me. I do wish Apple would add a HDMI port to their iMacs and Cinema Displays.

BD Is 'Bag of Hurt' for Nintendo Too!!

Wii U passing on DVD, Blu-ray
http://www.gamespot.com/news/6319615/wii-u-passing-on-dvd-blu-ray

"Wii U does not have DVD or Blu-ray playback capabilities," Iwata said. "The reason for that is that we feel that enough people already have devices that are capable of playing DVDs and Blu-ray, such that it didn't warrant the cost involved to build that functionality into the Wii U console because of the patents related to those technologies."

That's why I don't need BD in my Macs!!

I think that's also why the Wii didn't play DVDs. So it's not like it's a Blu-ray specific thing. Nintendo are being cheap. They probably want to reduce the likelihood of pirated games being distributed on BD-Rs too.

The Wii U's disc media does appear to be a blue laser based media but still proprietary.

I do agree with Porco though. It is more about piracy.

Agreed. Putting this in the any sort of "win" category just shows a lack of understanding Nintendo's history, IMO. This is just one of the things Nintendo has a long history of doing. Last console to ditch the cartridge. Last console to go HD. Last console to embrace online. Etc.,.

Lethal

And not ever, especially with the way they are promoting their online store. And not only have I not used any blu-rays on my MBP (which I couldnt anyway), but I havent inserted a CD in there since the first day I bought it. I download blu-ray movies, put them on my flash drive and hook that to my HDTV.

Anything to praise Apple and bash MS.
You're too predictable.

Too bad Apple hasn't been free of Windows like you have been..
Wonder if this will make you not use iCloud if it's still on Windows Azure.. Hmm

But Microsoft has multiple datacenters larger than Apple's North Carolina center, and a distributed fault tolerant system for both computing power and data storage.

Kudos to Apple for choosing to go with the "best in class" rather than trying to roll their own - even when the "best" is Microsoft.

Why

I do not understand, why only Apple is behind when it comes to Blu-ray technology. I am sure they are upto something innovative on this.

Apple 4G Networked Gaming Console

Can anyone else confirm rumours that Steve Jobbs is inviting stakeholders to consult on the development of the Apple gaming console? Sources in Australia Indicate he us working closely with a concept development Corp known as Eleven on the release to be timed with the 2014 Brazil world cup. Apparently EA sports will develop exclusively for the console which will integrate with a networked home entertainment unit

The Wii was the only console of its generation that didn't support HD. Don't need that in your Mac, right? Also incapable of playing DVDs. Quick, delete DVDPlayer.app pronto!

As was said they are being cheap, which was also their strategy for Wii. They can shave off a few bucks by not paying the various license fees to play DVD and/or Blu-Ray.

The only thing that saved their bacon in the current gen is the innovative controls. Now that the PS3 and XBox have equalled or surpassed it, they're back on the hot seat. I gotta say, XBox Kinect is terrific.

So now they grudgingly support HD in Wii U. The only hand they have left to play is the race to the bottom on price.

It's so cool to rely on Windows users to pirate your movies for you ;)

Apple was set to innovate in 2005 when they joined the Blu-Ray Association's board of directors.

http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2005/mar/10blu-ray.html

Steve Jobs said:
“Apple is pleased to join the Blu-ray Disc Association board as part of our efforts to drive consumer adoption of HD,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Consumers are already creating stunning HD content with Apple’s leading video editing applications like iMovie HD and are anxiously awaiting a way to burn their own high def DVDs.”

But then the iTunes Movie Store came out in late 2006 and all has been silent. It's been 5 years... But I'm sure they're working on it ;)

Maybe Apple is having a hard time getting BD-J and BD+ working reliably...

Don't get it...

Apple seems quite adamant that we can create / burn Blu-ray's with Final Cut. Where is the drive to do so?! Can sort of understand if it's not available on the entire range but maybe Mac Pro at least or something somewhere?

http://www.apple.com/finalcutstudio/specs/

Create Blu-ray Disc..., H.264 multi-pass encoding for Blu-ray discs and files, Apple-designed menus for DVD and animated menus for Blu-ray discs.....
