After 23 pages, I had to stop.

For a message board that is full of tech savvy people, there are a lot of people here ignorant on the subject of Blu-ray.

I'm not talking about the arguments about in being on Mac's or not. Just in general, there's a shitton of misinformation about the format itself.

Quite a few of you should do a bit of research before spouting off Jobs' bullet points like they are law.

Do I have to repost that graph from a few pages back ? 5-8 feet away, a 40" TV will have a very noticeable difference in quality between 480p, 720p and 1080p.
I've seen the chart before. You're right, I should have said a few more feet, although I think 40" at 8' is a bit small. ;) Point stands: I don't think the difference is quite so vast as people make it out to be.

But of course there are reasons beyond video for Apple to support Blu-ray. I personally don't really care (not going to use it for backups, not wanting to watch movies on my Mac instead of my TV), but it seems like they should.

The people I remember who hated VHS were all enthusiasts. Most average consumers didn't even know that films on VHS had been panned and scanned.

Well, of course, the enthusiasts were more enthused about DVDs, that's where their name comes from :) However, regular odd people simply hated VHS for the inconvenience: mainly the bulky tapes/fault-prone playback mechanism and the rewinding. Basically, the same reason why people hated audio cassettes. Do you remember, you had to pay a fee if you gave back your rented tapes and forgot to rewind them? What a PITA. DVDs on the other hand were "sexy".

I´m not buying an iMac unless it has a bluray drive.
I really want an iMac in the future, but right now, Apple are not bringing todays culture into their products.

Says who? Did you maybe just count the time after HD DVD died?

Are you really so lazy that you can't take all of 5 seconds to use Google and find yourself an answer?

Oh god! After reading through Steve's comments, I think he has officially reached that age where he doesnt give a crap anymore for what you think. "I am going to do s*** as I please. Its my way or the highway. I survived people like me, lets see if you can."

reminds me of my grandpa.

if i may also add, as though i haven't added enough already, anybody talking about netflix and their streaming in relation to what Jobs and Apple are trying to do, seems to have forgotten that they built their business on mailing DVDs and now Blu Rays, not streamed content.

streamed content is years away from changing the way we watch movies and tv on a daily basis. fact is, if you want to watch it now, you loose the quality, and if you want the quality, you'll have to watch it next week.

blu ray for the win!

I totally agree with Steve, I've NEVER needed a use for bluray, EVER.

The only reason I'd want a bluray player is really for a bluray burner since it can hold 20GB+. But then again, 3-4TB HDDS are coming soon, especially with USB 3.0/light peak.

Either way, I already have a PS3 for bluray playback and every movie I'd want to watch already is on the net in MKV format at 1080p that cannot be distinguished between a bluray disc and the MKV format anyways.

Steve isn't stopping you buying a BlueRay player or an 8-track or a MiniDisc player. Just go into the shop and buy one.

He just does not want to support a rival company's business model.
Sony did not produce any iPod accessories for the same reason.

Ah okay, now I follow. I don't 100% agree with your conclusion, but I do follow.

I remember enthusiasts REALLY hating VHS, genuine venom, you would have thought that a VHS tape had killed there parents when they were a child or something. Meanwhile most consumers griped about rewinding, broken tapes etc, but were overall accepting of it.

What I mean is, consumers weren't actively trying to kill VHS. When LaserDisc was around, a few people looked at it and went "meh, it's nice but VHS is good enough" even though LD would have solved all their rewinding problems.

From what I remember, complaining about VHS was for most, a minor gripe, like complaining about the weather.

However, once DVD came out and people saw the difference, they were blown away. It wasn't a strong hatred of VHS that made them switch, it was because once they had seen how much better DVD looked, they couldn't unsee that.

I might get flamed for this, but I was amazed at how good the recently release Toy Story movies looked on blu-ray, its outstanding, my dog freaks out when the Slinky Dog is the screen.

LOL, I would like to see that. Youtube it...;)

I somehow don't think that you and Steve are on the same page...

See, he doesn't pirate movies.

This is just Steve making more decisions for people instead of giving them a choice. He forces his customers to modify their lives as if it gives him some sort of credibility:

- "No one needs Flash because HTML 5 is better"... Apple doesn't implement Flash for iOS, so nobody can use it... companies have to go out of their way to develop HTML 5 versions of their services... Steve says. "Heh, told ya ;)"

- "No one needs to hold their phone in the lower left corner unless they buy a case"... Apple refuses to fix a design flaw, forcing people to either change the way they've been holding their phone for the last X years or purchase a case (which Apple conveniently happens to be selling)... Steve says "See? Not a big deal."

- "No one needs Blu-ray"... Apple customers don't get Blu-ray and have to improvise workarounds or use different (possibly inferior) technology until something Apple-supported is released in the future... Steve says, "I'm a genius! I knew Blu-ray was outdated and that something superior would come along someday!"

As others have said, we aren't forced to buy Apple products, but it is reasonable to expect them to perform relevant tasks that older, cheaper products can.

IMO netflix streaming 720p is just as good as a bluray movie. Unless you use a projector with 100" or bigger screen then I suppose a bluray player would be a lot better. But then almost everyone owns a PS3, so whats the big deal about blurays on macs anyway?

So instead of carrying your macbook pro or hooking up your mac pro to play bluray movies, you can just stick the bluray disc in a PS3 that already resides under your HDTV.

Also 1080p streaming is coming very soon. And I totally agree about the mp3 downloads which is here to stay and cd format that are dying basically. If mp3s and fast downloads existed at the popularity height of the cd format, cds would have lived a very short life.

What are you talking about? Sony DOES make stereos with iPod docks.

+1. Also, how is having a blu-ray player in your hardware "supporting Sony's business model"?
