I'm gonna predict that we'll see less of Jobs on stage than in the past. No one can give a keynote like Jobs, but it has been made clear that Apple wants to prepare for "life after Steve." One can infer that includes preparing everyone else, too.

So I won't be surprised to see him announce something with his usual flair but let others do more of the actual detail than they might have done in the past. Nothing new in this, but I'll really be interested to see how much time he's actually on stage.

He rarely does software demos himself anyway, so there would be nothing out of the ordinary if we didn't see him on stage that much during an event that is focused on software.

Always to have a nice laugh in the morning. No one goes for hardware related news, hence what WWDC actually stands for... developers = software. It sold out ridiculously fast, like always.

Let's differentiate between developer attendance and media attendance/coverage. No one doubts that it sold out in an hour, and will be a delight to watch for all the hardcore Mac fans, developers, accessory makers, etc.

But for Monday's evening news? A newspaper? It's much splashier to headline with "Apple Unveils New iPhone 5" than "Apple Releases Annual Software Update, As Expected".

Considering that WWDC was sold out after about seven hours, I don't think they would have any problems filling seats if some developers don't turn up. And please note that WWDC stands for "World Wide Developers Conference". The "D" stands for "Developers" not for "Rumour whores". That's people making a living by writing software for MacOS X and iOS devices, not people desperately lapping up the latest rumours.

This is a Developers conference. iOS 5 is important for developers. iPhone 5 isn't.

I'd disagree with that, considering that Apple has used WWDC for the past 4 years straight to unveil new iPhones. Obviously, devs work mostly with software, not hardware (except for accessory makers). But it's the "iPhone 5" that grabs headlines, sells units (AKA customers for devs), raises awareness of the platform, etc. Only CNET, Engadget, etc. will give the software/API/UI updates more 5 seconds coverage. When you watch cable news, the local news, or even newspaper, they will spend most of their time showing off the new hardware.

can't wait for ios5! :D

gonna make my beautiful ipad 2 even better. I really hope it's a complete overhaul, gingerbread on my android devices makes the current ios feel ancient lol

Can someone explain to me what's the point of an Apple music streaming service? (Of course I could save space with it, but with storage prices falling constantly it's not a major issue.)

Streaming would only really be useable over WiFi (3G with my carrier performance and high prices? No thanks), in which case I could just do it locally at home. And if I'm away from my home network, I'd still rather have the content with me which would be more reliable.

I'm happy to be corrected, but I just don't get it :).

I've also thought at times that the whole "Cloud" thing was over-hyped. Google's Chrome OS, for example, is a solution looking for a problem. But I have to admit, when I see my laptop, smartphone, and tablet, they don't exactly talk to each other very nicely.

A MobileMe subscription gets my calendar, contacts, etc. synced up. Plugging my phone/tablet into my computer and syncing for 20 minutes is a real hassle. The limited storage capabilities keeps my mobile devices from being full-fledged computers.

I would love to be able to use my iPad to access ALL my documents on the go, come home, and find them all updated. Seamless integration, that's what Apple is all about. As they currently exists, there are way too many work-arounds, exceptions, etc. to get everything to play nicely.

You mean like the last several keynotes?

Another dump on Apple post by you. You're as prolific as the guy on the other side of the table.

honestly I see iCloud being DOA big time if apple charges 1 cent for it. Reason being is it will be limited to only Apple devices, More then likely only work threw iTunes on computers. Both are huge deal killers for a lot of people. A lot of Apple fans have moved over to Android for their cells phone so that kills it. iTunes required is another deal killer.

Lets compared that to Google Music or Amazon Cloud player. Both of which work on Android phones and have a web browser interface so that allows it to work on iPhones and any computer as well with out extra software installed.

Oh please. Of course it will only be for Apple devices, Apple is in this to move hardware. As for deal killers, stop projecting tech geeks wants/needs to that of the general buying population. Lastly, where is this evidence that iPhone users have moved to Android?

As for features of the service, how about we wait until Monday to compare?

im more exited for ios 5 than anything else, we have seen lion and there are things still secret about cloud but its a pretty general thing. but ios 5 will be awesome i can taste it i cant wait till the 6th.

Yes, I meant to say FaceTime.

P.S. iChat is more than just an AIM client; it's also Yahoo and Google Talk.

I wanted to say "But I'm missing ICQ at iChat", to be sure it doesn't work I googled it, but it works (Just use an AIM Account and your ICQ Number as AIM Account Name). Testing it atm.

iCloud announcement makes sense as everyone pretty much knows it's coming. It's the thing that will bridge iOS and Mac OS (and finally sort out iOS' lack of proper filing). Perhaps it's the interoperability between the OS' that's only really hinted at by apps like Things or Evernote that's the big news here?

As for one more thing? I'd like to see them discontinue the Macbook, drop the price of the Macbook Air by a £100 on each model and shift that into the Macbook space.

If the MBA really is the future of laptops then Apple should put their money where their mouth is and make it a first choice buy in the bottom end of their laptop line (and dump that awful looking plasticky thing that bears the Macbook name)...

Like I said, nothing new in the concept.

True, and I expect to see people like Scott Forrestal. However, as others have pointed out, historically Steve likes to announce the new stuff and has demoed new software, including OS releases.

The question is the amount of time compared with previous years.

How much do you guys think Lion will be?

I have a SL-powered, 2010 MBP. Will I be able to get Lion as a "doscounted upgrade"
How has this been in the past, for older mac users?

Also, syched that we will get a new iOS without having to buy a new phone, just love my iP4

Hmm. Snow Leopard was $29, and Leopard was $129. It's somewhere in-between in terms of features, so I'd say $79?

I'm reeeally looking forward to a more in-depth, polished, gee-whiz presentation of Lion, whether it is at WWDC, Apple.com, or even commercials. I remember getting so excited for Tiger and Leopard. So far, Lion has lacked that punch. It's got really cool features, but I just don't think they've given it that certain level of excitement. I'm also holding out for one as-yet-unveiled feature of Lion!

iOS 5 should be sweet. With advances from Honeycomb and webOS, I don't think they will let iOS' weaker areas go undefended for any longer. This should be a great WWDC!!

my favorite was trying to get to me.com with my android phone to check how the location finder for my ipad 2 worked. works on lenovo laptops but not android phones

I have the same rig. Usually Apple only gives the discount upgrade to those who have purchased a new computer or copy of OS X within 30 or 60 days. Your one year old computer would almost certainly not apply.

Last time (when SL was released) they gave everyone running leopard a discount so the upgrade was only $30.

"Oh, and one more thing. Starting this July, we will be shipping a new iPhone model called the iPhone 4S. It will retain the same design and features as the iPhone 4, but it will ship with iOS 5.0, and it will be faster and will be a world mode phone for both CDMA and GSM 3G networks."

I don't believe breaks in release cycle until I see them.

That wasn't a discount, that was the price. It was cheap because there were no major new features.

The discount price was 9.95 via the Up-To-Date program, for anyone who bought a mac that summer.

That would give developers at most only two months ahead of time with iOS 5. I don't think iOS 5 will come until at least August, most likely September.

I'm excited to see what's in the keynote considering an update to the iWork apps is usually used as filler. If they don't need filler, it's all killer!

However, now that Apple is going to showcase and release i0S5, I don't know how they can do it -- hype it up like this -- while demo-ing it on a 1+ year old, current generation phone. Where's the excitement? How can you put a new mobile OS out that looks to the future -- is the next big thing -- and demo it on your 1-year-old product?

You just cannot talk about i0S5 and its capabilities within the framework of iP4 and expect there to be excitement that Apple has always drummed up.

Totally agree with this. Shiny new iOS 5 on last year's phone (as great as the iP4 is)? Doesn't make sense.
