I always find it amusing when people resort to quoting system performance statistics when trying to justify why a PC machine is better than a Mac machine. Quote all the hardware specs you like, for me "performance" is measured by the OS, the ease of use, the stability, the software, how productive I can be, and how much fun I can have using my machine - these are the factors that make me rank one machine superior to another - hardware is only one small piece. But that's just me. 😎
 
Hopefully Steve will give us a general date (say, within 6 months) of when they'll announce the date that they will release Powerbook G5s. 😡

Steve tries my patience daily...
 
Just to Point out....

I was just wondering what the deal with the Apple Order Status page is, It's been down due to some "scheduled upgrade" for probably 14 hours, and I'm REALLY getting anxious to see where my tiger is!

Sorry to come out of the blue, lol but I want my tiger!
 
Does anyone know which G4 chips (dual core or otherwise) sampling and a candidate for the Powerbook? The last PB update and the current PM updates just seem like temp updates while they wait for new chips or better timing. I would like to see a dual core G4 and increased FSB in the PB. It seems like a true major update to the PB and PM are just around the corner.

O.K. My understanding is that he is correct. The Pentium-M is awesome processor with a really fast bus speed. Only the dual core G4 can counter it.

A Pentium M beat an FX-55? Have any proof? I'd seriously like to see that.
 
Laptop Display Resolution

I see lots of comments hoping for new G5 Powerbooks. While someday I'd like to see a G5 in a Powerbook just as much as anyone else, what I really wish Apple would do with respect to both lines of laptops is to increase the resolution of the displays. 1024 x 768 is seriously out of date in the 12"s and moreso in the 14" iBook. Have you seen the resolutions that are standard or optional on the Dells/Sonys/etc.? Perhaps I'm getting ahead of myself and the next major rev. of the iBooks and Powerbooks will have widescreen, high-resolution displays, but one could hope.

I've had a different experience from you with the P-M chips in Dell laptops. Those chips are as fast as P4 chips almost twice their speed, however, the blue screen of death still pops up every couple of weeks even running XP Pro SP2.

My PB has run (slept and waked) for over a month (that's the longest it's gone until software update required a restart) with no problems--one of many things that makes a PB superior to win laptops.

The future for the Powerbook is in Freescale's MPC8641 e600 single and dual core processors.

This is Motorola's... sorry Freescale's... "G5" class chip.... might not be as fast as a true G5, but I'll take Dual DDR2, a 667mHz Bus, PCI Express, and two speedy cores at 1.6-1.8 Ghz anyday. This thing has been around for a year or so... its got to be the future. If nothing... lets move to the MPC7448, which is pin for pin compatible with current G4s... and it has a 200mHz bus, using the same e600 core.

Mark my words... no more Powerbook G4... just Powerbook, and one hell of alot of power indeed. Bring it on. My 1Ghz Titanium is fast approaching time for replacing (though, Tiger, WOW, did that help)
 
Two button touch pad scrolling mouse. and a new Mac Mini w/ 512mb standard, so you can run pre installed Garageband that doesnt run on the 256 😕

Is there a link to where you are finding this selling "OS" record selling information>??? Anyone-please cough up. I can never find good Apple marketing and product selling statistics. Is it because they are so tight that they don't readily make this information available???

sorry for all who have read this before... I'm gonna keep driving home the same point.
apples business strategy totally alienates developers. they have this strategy of "the industry wont wont adopt us? we'll do it ourselves." and thats admirable but it yeilds a toylike mac whose developers are digidesign and adobe and 50,000 dopes writing boring itunes hacks and shell GUIs. What percentage of users who are attracted to a macs ease of use are going to install a second consumer grade browser, mp3 player,photo browser, movei editor, word processor, or presentation maker?

slowly but surely as standards become tighter and people port stuff easier, developers will realize apple will either do it them selves or pull a konfabulator. they'll find that apples users expect everything to look like aqua,milk or brushed aluminum even if it's not the most fitting interface design.

Well, the 6th of May is a Friday in my country. Where do you live? I didn't know the same date could be on a different weekday in different countries. I thought that was what time zones were for. But WWDC starts on 6th of June, and that is a Monday. Sorry to dissapoint you... 😉

It's good to see someone injecting some common sense into the Powerbook G5 argument!

Based on the numerous lengthy discussions that I've seen on this topic, I don't believe that it would be possible to get the current G5 processor into a notebook at any time in the forseeable future. However, on the other hand, the Powerbook is one of Apple's key products and I have no doubt that Apple is aware that they have neglected it for too long.

With this in mind, I believe that your idea is entirely feasible. For all we know, a new notebook processer may be in the works as we speak. I will be watching this with interest over the next few months.

Yup, but that raises the chance of an upgraded powerbook. So I am very comfortable with waiting another month...
Although it's still quite unlikely to happen... "Hope" 😀

I honestly hope they will come up with dual-core G4-powerbook running on 533Mhz FSB and sporting an integrated mem-controller and integrated gigagit ethernet, running at 1.5+GHz.

Seiously, anyone who hopes for G5 powerbook is talking nonsense. Yes, G5 is a fine CPU, but there are alternative CPU's out there that are alot better MOBILE-CPU's than the G5 is! And the G4 I described (and it exists) would run rings around that underclocked G5 they would cram in to the PB.

The problem current G4 has is FSB-bandwidth. Moving to integrated mem-controller and integrated gigabit-ethernet, together with seriously increased FSB-bandwidth, that problem is eliminated. Hell, even single-core version of that CPU would be more than competetive with G5, while consuming ALOT less power!

G5 PB? just say no!

What I would like to see is an iBook based on single-core version of that CPU, and PB based on dual-core version of that CPU. You would have your product-differentiation right there, and it would mop the floor with the current G4.
