YouTube isn't MOVING away from Flash .. they are testing video in HTML5 because it is a new technology that is being considered for a future HTML Standard.. they would look bad if they DIDN'T test it.

YouTube will not move from Flash... by doing so.. they would block all the millions of users who use IE ... which accounts for more than half of web users.. they would also cause inconstancy in browser version.

For YouTube and any other company.. Flash runs on all browsers.. all OS's .. and that's what they care about.

Sure they will. If people are using IE they will see the nice little reminder/question at the top of the page that says something like, "Can't view these videos? Get a real browser and download Google Chrome now!" Google will then have someone else using their browser (which is worlds better than IE).

PDF is no longer a proprietary format:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Portable_Document_Format
Formerly a proprietary format, PDF was officially released as an open standard on July 1, 2008, and published by the International Organization for Standardization as ISO/IEC 32000-1:2008.
Yes, in 2008, but it's been a cornerstone of OS X since 2001. During those 7 years, neither Apple nor anyone else discredited PDF because it was a proprietary Adobe format, which makes it a tad silly to suddenly discredit the SWF format for that reason.

In his arguments against Flash, Jobs reportedly claimed that including Flash support would have decimated the iPad's battery life, bringing it down from its claimed 10 hours to the neighborhood of 1.5 hours.

Decimation refers to reducing something by 10%. If the iPad's battery life was "decimated", it would still be nine hours.

Decimation comes from Latin, meaning, literally "removal of a tenth". The word has its origins in the Roman practice of killing one in ten members of an army as punishment.

Please, people, use this word correctly. Its original meaning is perfectly clear just by reading it. Don't they teach Latin in schools these days?

Aren't there agreements with the sdk which would prevent them releasing anything developed on the sdk via cydia?

If relations are frayed between the two parties now, such an act would push them to the limit.

You said develop and test, not release. My point being nothing is stopping them from making an awesome,non-battery draining version of flash and proving steve wrong.

think Steve-O sometimes forgets that's got a pretty small market share in the computer space...he's not dictating anything to anyone. Instead, I think he's throwing up a smokescreen to hide the fact that Safari is poorly coded to handle flash, not the other way around.

I'm so tired of Apple telling me what I can and cannot do on a device that I spent hard earned money on, and this is coming from someone who LOVED Apple.

If I want to run my battery down.. LET ME.. its not FOR YOU to decide and be BIG BROTHER. Get a life steve and let your customers choose what they want on their device.

I'm slowly starting to move toward Android & Windows. I'm getting tired of Apple's closed, BIG BROTHER system.. developers are slowing leaving and now customers.

Maybe those of you who are entitled need a little lesson. NOBODY is forcing you to buy anything. So, in essence, NOBODY is telling you how to use anything. If it doesn't have what you need then don't buy it. Seriously this socialistic entitled attitude irritates me to no end. If you don't love Apple anymore then by all means, go buy a HP slate or whatever. Economics and the free market system really confuse some of you people. A part of me wants flash too, but FOR ME the benefits outweigh the negatives so I will buy one. It's a personal choice, stop getting angry over it, it's not that big of a deal. Are we that selfish and materialistic in this world? Don't answer, it was rhetorical.

Wouldn't that actually be pretty brilliant, though? Millions of IE users navigate to YouTube and find that their current browsers no longer work with their favorite site...but hey, apparently Chrome does!

I think people are misunderstanding these meetings. Steve isn't being arrogant and bullying his way into corporate boardrooms to dump on Adobe. Newspapers are in serious trouble, at least in the US. They are actively seeking ideas on how to stay alive. Yes, SJ will pitch his view of the future, but that's what they want and need. I'm sure one of Balmer's minions was there last week pitching Silverlight, and Google will be there pitching new advertising models.

This is how business is done. You develop a strategy based on broad analysis and research (as WSJ is trying to do) and then pursue it with confidence (as Jobs is doing).

What does Steve have stuck up his ass bout flash?

Not that it would be a bad thing to see Adobe get beat around some.

I agree with jobs wholeheartedly, in theory. But in reality, you cannot sell an Internet-centric device like the ipad, billed as the best internet experience you've ever had, and not have flash. Too many really popular sites use it heavily. I wish it weren't so, but html5 is not prevalent enough yet to no have flash on a device primarily being sold as an Internet portal.

Implementing Flash to the iPad, while fine, certainly doesn't mean you'll have the "best internet experience", especially if it slows down your experience, crashes your browser and shortens battery life which is exactly what Flash does on OS X and Windows. So refresh me? How does implementing Flash on to the iPad help to complete the model of "best internet experience?"

In think in the grand scheme of things apple (and its user base) is a small voice and will not have much impact on shifts away from flash.

Yes. Apple never sets trends. That's why there are no multitouch phones, OS's with gui's and mice, etc.

the NYT redoing their entire website??? does this puzzle anyone else? HTML5 tags like "video" and "src" are so easy to use... why on earth do they need javascript? plus HTML5 will auto fall back to flash... I dont get why that would be a big deal.

Retiring the technologies he used as examples (floppies, 9-pin serial/25-pin parallel/SCSI etc) had obvious advantages for manufacturers and consumers. Where is that advantage in retiring Flash? It's not going to make your laptop lighter, thinner or cheaper. It's a widespread format and it's working. Things like that are extremely difficult to get rid of.
There are vastly superior alternatives to MP3 (AAC, OGG), they offer better sound quality and none of the licensing issues with MP3. And yet MP3 rules supreme. It has become to audio formats what Kleenex is to tissue paper, a genericized trademark.

The benefit is retiring a technology that is not going anywhere. Imagine what the world would be like today if the technology never progressed past HTML sites like were around in the mid 90's. New technologies improve the internet, just like old hardware standards die when we outgrow the need for them. We are beginning to outgrow the need for something proprietary like Flash. Most supporters of open source view that as a benefit.

Yes, Adobe (or rather, Macromedia) has been lazy. But the new 10.1 player is the first Flash version to use GPU accelaration. It increases rendering speed by 87% over the previous version and reduces memory consumtion by 55%.

And also increases power consumption in the process. Not so bad on a desktop, but most people surf on a laptop or mobile device with a battery.

In order for HTML5 to take over, someone has to develop proper authoring tools first. Flash animators aren't going to let go of Flash Professional (soon at version 10) in favor of some crappy 0.9beta of whatever the predominant HTML5 authoring tool will be. These rickety HTML5 demos are proof of concept, nothing more.

I am not sure I would call what YouTube and others are doing "rickety." But you are correct that it is a new technology that people will be slow to appreciate and adopt. That just means developers have to learn something new:eek:

Yes Apple USED to be the one pushing new technologies, but not anymore...

First to push USB, yet not using USB3.
First to push DVD, yet only person on the planet not using Blu-ray.
First access to some CPUs, yet last to still sell Core 2 Duo (at full premium price)!
First with a nextgen GUI, yet 10 years later it's now looking dated.
Blah blah blah.... Last to implement SD card slots, not yet using SATA3, heck what about built in 3G on MacBooks like we've had with ThinkPads for years?!

You're behind the times Jobs :(

Yes, sometimes Apple waits too long. But I'd say that usually Apple is just very "selective" in which technologies it pushes. Also, they tend to wait until a technology is practical and feasible before they implement it, so they can do it elegantly without impacting other features.

They're not pushing USB 3.0, but they're presumed to be collaborating with Intel on Light Peak. They've been very consistently putting 802.11b/g/n in their products. They've also pushed/popularized A LOT of end-user features like Multitouch, Unibody aluminum construction, magnetic latches/power, DisplayPort, integrated webcams, slot-loading disc drives, infrared remotes, etc.

Regarding their UI, I still think that Apple is far beyond any other tech company. I think in all of these things, it's unfair to compare innovation in 2010 to say, the 1990s which was a tumultuous time for tech. Many different competing standards and operating systems were still jostling around back then. Things have settled down in terms of OS, UI, Wireless, data cables, etc.

And I'm pretty sure Apple would've released i5 MacBook Pros by now if it wasn't for the whole NVIDIA mess. I'm waiting for one, personally! :)

Click to Flash

I never realized how much flash does suck your battery life down. I also never realized all the ads that are in so many of the websites I visit. So for those of you that were talking about Click to Flash... thanks for the heads up. Just downloaded it... and I'm happy.

I also don't play Farmville.

I will not think the online experience will be great without flash. Without flash, I am sure I will miss out a lot.

I have more faith in the HP Slate more than the iPad if you come and think of it. At least HP doesn't tell you what you can or cannot do.

Flash on a mac

Ok here's the deal. I'm a Flash developer for and advertising agency building web content. Been doing it for about 5 years. Flash runs much better on a Mac. Safari and Firefox are much more forgiving then IE. As a matter of fact the frame rate in Safari is faster then IE and Firefox.

There are guys here that use html 5 Canvas and they say its horrible.

Truth is if the ipad/iphone/ipod touch have Flash then it would cut into Apples itunes store revenue. Remember Flash is not browser dependent. It can run as an app. You can build apps in the up coming Flash CS5.

It would also allow apple to monopolize online video with the H264 codec rather then Flashes .flv format

I love apple and will buy an ipad either way but Flash is here to stay. Anyone remember Adobes so called javascript based "Flash killer" Livemotion

Hahahahahahahaha!

I can imagine old Steve foaming on his mouth talking non-sense and general ******** while at the same time, in the real world, things like this are happening:

FLASH ON NEXUS ONE! --- > http://theflashblog.com/?p=1781

Steve go retire for the sake of all of us please!

:D

EDIT:

By the way, did Steve or any one of you wonder, why Flash crashes Safari on the Mac and it never crashes Firefox!?!?!

LOL!

Perhaps Steve should be fixing Safari instead of talking poo...

It's crashed my computer twice this week already using firefox. About an hour ago too. Who even says "LOL" anymore. Who cares how steve reacts/talks, he get's things done and has made an impact on the world, which is more than I can say about most of the people posting on this forum. If you want a nexus one or droid, go get one, and get on another website.

PS - GTA CW is awesome on the 3GS

Apple wants to prevent taking any blame from customers who are non super users who would happen to visit sites that drain the device. I'm sure someone would watch hulu and blame Apple for poor battery life on the device. I commend Apple for not sticking to the status quo of the usual business models, i.e. if enough customers request something put it in. They have the bigger picture in mind.

I know what you mean on the closed platform though and Microsoft being more open to 3rd party vendors in their ecosystem, PC, Xbox, Zune etc. I use both Windows and Mac platforms often and everyone has their opinion of what they prefer. For consuming any type of digital media I just prefer the Apple ecosystem from ease of use and great gui and just put up with all that it is missing. There are surely tradeoffs, how much is a Microsoft point worth nowdays, that system is also not worth buying media on that platform, imho.

For each developer that may stop developing software for Mac desktops they probably gain two that start developing for iPhone/iPad.

Unless they mean it was decimated like 10 times in a row haha

LOL, YouTube has been moving away from Flash for years. They've been using h.264 for mobile devices since the original iPhone and for Android devices that didn't support Flash. Do you really believe Google, who it is always in their advantage to support open standards, are fully behind Flash? You're fooling yourself. Go look at Google's sites. You'll very little Flash in any of it. What does that tell you?

BTW, every computer that has Windows Media Player or iTunes already has native h.264 support which constitutes most of all computers out there. Microsoft has already shown interest in supporting the standard and would rather kill off Flash for Silverlight.

As for IE, their share has rapidly dropped and Google has already shown their willingness to drop IE support in some ways by supporting HTML5 specs in some of their apps. They have even offered plugins for IE so that these features are supported.

Seriously. Thank you. People are forgetting we still live in a capitalist society and competition leads to better products.

Also good point about the news papers, if one person can save them, it's probably Jobs. They've been losing ground for years, and years. Hasn't anyone seen season 5 of The Wire?

I have

I agree with Jobs on a lot of things but this is not one of them...
Flash is not just video, Its incredibly rich interactive web media that cannot be replaced with html5.

I have a feeling this will come back to bite the apple...

I agree with you its the one thing I wish Apple was on board with.
