Clearly there have been a small number of unlucky users who have received units with bad screens and Apple should and is replacing them. However, the vast majority of iPads have no screen issues and all the melodramatic "this is the death of Apple" if we don't march on Cupertino from the vocal 2% club is pretty humorous.

just got my perfect new iPad

Just returned from best buy and bought an open box 64GB white new iPad for 569. Couldn't pass up on this deal. I was hesitant because the girl told me the person that returned it was not happy with the display. He stated that it was not white enough. I opened it and it looks perfect to me. It looks fantastic. The screen has no yellow tint to me. It is brand new. It even had the plastic still on it. I have to agree that people are just being to picky but at the same time they are spending a good sum of money. Im just thankful that someone returned it. Saved me $130 and it looks perfect to me.

I am scared to do the open box display at Best Buy because of these OCD Apple users who are aware of the backlight, yellow screen, etc. issues. I just feel like one of those iPads have those issues, and thats why it was returned. But, I guess only one way to find it...buy one.

The problem isn't the nitpicky customers, the problem are the people that think we should lower our expectations in order to spare Apples feelings

Agreed, that's a huge problem! It's about time we started dealing in facts and stopped mischaracterizing other posters for no good reason.

On that note, I didn't see the post where someone said "lower your expectations to spare Apple's feelings" nor did I see any post where someone implied it, so could you quote them?

I was too so thats why i opened it there. I did check for backlight bleeding, dust, etc. but i wasn't going to TRY to find something wrong. Its perfect to me and I'm enjoying it. I did buy apple care + just in case.

I've owned all 3 iPads and all on launch day. I've thoroughly enjoyed all of them and am loving the iPad 3. The secret? Its just a piece of technology not some bloody work of art or priceless artifact. Its a mass produced electronic from China that is bound to have imperfections just by logic. The people on here that spend a sad amount of time dwelling on minor light leakage or little things are doing themselves a disservice. Just use the thing and move on with your lives. If you're not going to be satisfied until you have the perfect one you'll be waiting for ever.

I doubt Steve Jobs or Jonny Ive would keep an imperfect iPad.... I'm with them.

People love the products because the attention to detail is of the highest order whether they consciously acknowledge that or not.

Seeking perfection and getting on with life are not mutually exclusive. I've been getting on and enjoying my iPad despite the minor tinting...

Glad you checked it there. Great find. Enjoy.

This forum is almost unbearable now a days with all this bu11**** complaining, I'm so glad I'm not an apple employee or I'd probably go insane

So you pay hundreds of dollars on a device, and you are not allowed to be picky??? :roll eyes:

Look I know some people here are in love with Apple, and worship them like they are sending you a paycheck every month to kiss their asses, even though they don't give a damn about you, just your money, but if someone is spending that much money on a device, they have the right to be picky, and complain if the device is not perfect from day 1.

Open wide...
I just stated some facts. Perhaps you could tell me how I am wrong, and why a consumer, 'as a consumer, is entitled to purchase a perfect product'.
I really don't understand why you are so angry at anyone who offers an opinion that differs from yours. It's not a big deal.

this is great.

There really is a divide here, and emotions.

The two sides feel very strongly, and there's not much of a middle ground.

On one side, are those who feel that returning an expensive item like this more than twice is just very, very, rude, and it's made worse when they come here and announce how rude you are, while being clueless and arrogant.

The other side thinks they just want a good version of something they really love, and spend a lot of time with, and that it's only natural that they are selective.

They also feel that it's really only their business, and if someone doesn't like it tough. Why would anyone else care what they do?. They are intelligent, good, social, law abiding productive members of society, and they feel they are just exercising their rights as consumers.

Keep it up :)

Admittedly I don't understand people who return a device more than 2-3 times.

I am a very picky person, but after the second return I'm going to declare my time more valuable, and move on to another company/product, or decide to live without it for a while. (After all, this is a luxury purchase.) Doing 4, 5 even 6 returns sounds to me like someone has a lot more free time on their hands than I do, what with all the trips to the shipper or the Apple store. Just one trip to return something--anything--is a major inconvenience for me. Doing it over and over and over again...

I'd return it, take a deep breath, go on with life for a calendar quarter, then maybe try again.

That is a great deal, sure it is not an iPad 2?

My iPad do have some yellow spot and pink whatever, but this is only visible with full brightness and with a total still black image, it's something that I only notice after some OCD posts here, after a few months.
But, why do I care? It isn't visible in most cases! I think they're just happy to complain, and that's how they enjoy their iPads lol

I thought my screen was perfect but I just saw a video of some kid in a dark room and a black image on their iPad that had a pinkish tint when held at an angle. I tested mine out in my bedroom just now and I see the same thing, a pink hue over black but only at high brightness is it most apparent. I don't see it on white images. But even from day one, I felt like viewing angles on the new iPad looked odd. Like the lighting just doesn't catch my eyes right unless it's a direct viewing angle.

Does anyone else see what I am describing? Is this the dreaded pink screen or are they all like this? I don't recall my iPad 1 or 2 having viewing angles like this.

Can you share the link to that video please. Thank you :)

I think the poster nikos on this forum is the video poster. Saw some one call him out on this video. The problem seems really minute. But if there is a better screen like my older iPads the. I would prefer that too.

Oh please. I've seen your video that shows a color shift at an extreme angle with full brightness on a black screen in the dark.

And this is a shame?

I saw the video as well, so I tested mine out while lying here in bed and I get the same results as him. I'm wondering if it's a few units or maybe they are all like this... My screen is perfect otherwise. Can't see pink on white. Only on black and most noticeable at high brightness. I am wondering if this is an LED issue instead of a screen issue. Saw another post where they mention having some color LEDs compensate to make white.

From a different thread.

The reason the color shifts at slightly different angles, and in different lighting scenarios, has to do with the density of the pixels, and from what I understand, the various treatments the panel gets to allow it to show the most neutral screen color possible.

Apparently, pure white LEDs are too expensive to mass produce. So panel manufacturers use cheaper colored ones, then try to neutralize that color with phosphors and coatings under the glass. If you've ever really looked at "white" LED Xmas lights, you'll notice they're not really pure white...they often bluish or pinkish. Also, if you compare a standard LCD TV to an LED backlit one, you'll notice the LED ones run a bit bluish or pinkish. This is especially true of Samsung TVs, which all seem to run pink.

The pink (or yellow) you see in the iPad screen is the color they add in an attempt to neutralize the bluish LEDs. When you are indoors, the backlight of the iPad is generally stronger than the ambient room light, so the effects of the pink correction are not as noticeable. But when you're in bright outdoor light, the ambient light is actually reflecting off of the color treatment, and the backlight is not strong enough to counter the reflected color you see.

The variable is the amount of treatment the panels get to counteract the base color of the LEDs. Those complaining of yellow or pink screens in all lighting conditions probably have iPads that received too much of the color correcting treatment. Those, like me, who have been complaining of blotchy multicolor panels have probably been receiving panels that did not get treated evenly enough.

As for the color shift at different angles...This is a byproduct of pixel density.

Imagine 3 people standing shoulder to shoulder, each holding a 1 foot square piece of colored cellophane. Person 1 is holding a red one. Person 2 is holding a green one. Person 3 is holding a blue one. They are collectively one RGB pixel.

Now imagine a big room, with 1024 of these groups of 3 people, all standing shoulder to shoulder, all holding red, green and blue sheets of cellophane.

Now imagine climbing to the top of a tall ladder at one edge of the room and looking down at the crowd. You can see each person, carrying each piece of cellophane, and you can easily make out the individual colors of the pieces of cellophane, even if you climb down the ladder a bit and look across the crowd.

That's the iPad 2.

Now the doors of the room open and another 1024 groups of 3 people each all file in, each carrying a piece of colored cellophane. You climb back to the top of the ladder. You can no longer make out individuals...it's just a sea of densely packed people carrying pieces of colored cellophane.

And if you climb down the ladder a bit (like tilting the screen), you can barely even see the people in the back corner. And instead of looking on to the tops of each sheet of cellophane, you're now looking into the sides of hundreds of them at once...all the colors bleed together. From the left side of the room, you see mostly red cellophane, with some green showing through. From the right side, you see mostly blue, with some green showing through.

This is the iPad 3.

Who exactly said it was an issue or not right?

Mister 6 returns?

Looking at these display's at severe angles...that seems like an everyday use right.......not!

Hi urkel, that post you quoted never said 'lower your standards to avoid hurting Apple's feelings', why don't you try again? I know things are busy at your strawman factory but hopefully you get a chance soon. Also, 'asking people to make reasonable and well-supported arguments'' doesn't constitute being angry, I'm surprised you interpreted a polite request that way. Next time why not try to defend or clarify your position instead of quoting out of context and questioning my motivations?

nope, new iPad.

That is a great deal, sure it is not an iPad 2?

Its the new iPad. I saw two at this price at best buys around my area. Waited to long on one and when i had the money to buy it, it had been sold so i saw another one and i jumped on it. I made sure it was a new iPad. Model number and dictation gives it away. Even when i download books on kindle app it shows iPad 3.

IMO, anything is ridiculous when carried out to extremes.

Sure, you return an iPad once, it can be arrributed to you being unlucky and shipped a faulty model. But anything more than twice, I am inclined to believe that the issue is more of the buyer being needlessly picky and having unrealistic expectations.

It's like complaining the iPad can't cure cancer. Yes, anyone would want to get that mythical perfect screen, but who is to say that the iPad was supposed to come default with such a perfect screen in the first place? After returning 4-5 times, you don't wonder maybe this is as good as the screen gets?
