Oh. I forgot the period in that last one. Get that for me will you?

Fact is that for me, when looking at both in person side by side, retina display beats the super Amoled.

Others may agree or not. I really don't care. Just wondering why you care so much.

Get a girlfriend. Turn off the computer.

yo. we don't care if the retina display is better than the super amoled, it probably is. the point is, you come off sounding like a assclown fanboy.

like seriously dude, theres no arguing with the retina displays resolution, its better, we get it. don't get all pissy about it and try to slam other companies. you act like apple is paying you to advertise hardcore.

To be honest, having seen both side by side, I have to say the iP4s screen is much nicer.

Now in terms of UI, well, I really don't see it as "dated." I think people see it as getting long in the tooth only because it's been around awhile, but from a design standpoint it's pretty solid. That said, it also seems like many competitors have a very... similar set up for home screens. Android breaks up the rows of icons with widgets, but other than that and WP7 they all pretty much look the same as an iPhone.

I agree. My previous point about the UI is that it does not take full advantage of the retina display (some may disagree). The UI is great, but it is looking dated because of how old it is and all the new stuff coming out. It's mainly a consumer appeal thing. Android is much worse, but WP7 seems to be some decent competition in the UI department. All apple really needs to add is a more informational lock screen and a better notification system. Maybe even just upgrade to a 4in screen.

EDIT: As someone posted earlier, the iOS UI, while not amazingly eye catching on the retina display, still is the best OS out there in terms of organization and finding what you need quickly and without having to figure out what you are looking at.

Exactly. Thanks.

Maybe because I'm new with iPhone. But looking and working with this UI I now get it. It is genius.

I fail to see how the Retina Display is 'hands down' better than the Galaxy S's screen. Without figures/etc you simply cannot state this as a fact. What you can say however is that that is your opinion. I believe you were the one telling me not to state my opinions as facts a few posts ago

I believe that this thread is about IPS vs (S)AMOLED. Not Android vs iOS. You were the one who dragged it off-topic.

Back on topic now, I guess.

I came from a Desire to an iPhone 4 and my personal view is that the AMOLED screen is better in some circumstances and worse in others, but the difference in resolution is negligible in normal use.

There's nothing "magical" about a retina display - it's just a high resolution screen that has a slightly higher resolution (960x640) than the Desire and other similar phones (800x480), but at normal viewing distances, I don't see how anyone can describe a screen of 800x480 as "pixellated crap" - it's crystal clear. Maybe not quite as clear as the iPhone screen (due to the lower res), but certainly not crap.

One thing I preferred about the AMOLED screen was the absolute blacks you get, and the lack of a backlight: I use my phone as a bedside clock and the AMOLED screen is far, far superior to the iPhone screen for that use (with the iPhone, the backlight throws a fair amount of light into the room no matter how low you turn the brightness down)

However, the AMOLED screen is pretty useless outdoors in anything approaching bright daylight (I think the Super AMOLED is supposed to overcome some of that problem)

Personally, I'd be happy with either type of screen in my phone but if pushed would probably prefer the iPhone screen for it's better visibility outdoors and improved viewing angles.

The super Amoled and the galaxy s are nice. Sure. But the phone is the same price as the iPhone 4.

Just looking at the Phone icon at the bottom that android tries so hard to copy from iOS, the pixels in the Super Amoled were clearly visible to me. Althogh the screen was very bright, my iPhone 4 screen looked much better in comparison. Looking at the same icon in both phones the iPhone 4's pixels completely disappear. My screen looks to be of a much higher quality.

That's why I say it's pixelated crap. Because they're selling it to me for the same price even though mine is clearly better.

Again, anyone can just go to the store and compare for themselves.

And a coworker just bought a desire. Tried to compare it with my iPhone 4.

Poor thing. :D

Hey, you're the one who started with the irrational arguments.

Perhaps I should've added a /s.

LOL@ Apple troll calling others trolls.

Stop stating your opinion as if they are facts. This is something you told me to do, yet you refuse to do it yourself

I don't care. Commuting is boring and this is pure comedy :D why not? It entertains me and puts you into a hissy fit. How dare I suggest that Apple doesn't make the best phone!

Just want to add- the Desire, as previously stated, has an older graphics chipset and the screen is not SAMOLED. Unfair comparison. What you should be comparing it to is the 3GS. I'm pretty sure even you know which screen is better.

Not that you'll care, but other level-minded people might want to know.

Yo'. Have you read the thread title?

And thanks for clarifying that you're new to the iPhone- we now understand why you're so excited about it ;) New phone excitement is something we all feel.

What you say about the galaxy s is YOUR opinion also.

MY opinion is the iPhone 4 is better.

People can judge for themselves.

And they will find out I'm right.

That's from a professional comparison done between the 2 devices.

I read that comparison before I bought the iPhone 4. I thought it couldn't really be that obvious. But that is exactly the difference you see when you look at them in person

Not my opinion at all. That is a picture of both phones side by side.

You can clearly see the retina display is the superior screen. And I'm not saying that just from those pictures but from looking at them with my own eyes. It's pretty much what you see there.

Laugh if you want. I will bet you $20 that Apple adds widgets functionality to the next iPhone/iOS.

You iPhone users always bash a feature until Apple implements it..and *then* all of a sudden it is useful/awesome.

Widgets functionality would be a step forward for Apple, I had it on my last phone, not Android, you can select the info you need, weather, or sports scores that are constantly updated, with several widgets operating, different info is displayed at the same time, very handy feature.

Widgets will never exist in an iPhone the way they do in android. Forget it. Just get an android then.

Apple may come up with a kind if live icon or notification system but widgets as we know them don't fit in an iPhone. The design, simplicity and the way iOS and osx are alike. There has to be a design continuity from the iPhone to the mac.

I don't think the next big iOS update will include widgets. Doesn't make sense.

I don't need to see the stupid temperature outside on my screen all the time. What are you? The channel 5 weather man?

And there are plenty of sports and news apps with push notifications. You don't need a widget cluttering your screen throwing crap in your face 24 hours a day. A simple notification circle is enough to let me know I have 3 or 4 new sport notifications and I'll check them when I have time.

I really don't see the big deal with widgets.

Nice wall of text. I hope you didn't spend too much time typing up that pro-Apple essay. Steve Jobs would be proud ;)

The fact is, there is no absolute method to determine which screen is better. Screens are not like processors- you can't benchmark them. What you see is different from what others may see (ie what you think may be different compared to why others think). Some may prefer clarity when looking at the screen -extremely- closely (as your 'professional' test shows) while others may prefer better color range. What I can say is that the two screens look similar in terms of clarity when I place the phones 1 foot away from my eyes (my eyes=my opinion. comprende?).

Still haven't answered my question- how far do you hold your phone from your eyes? If it were about a foot away (like a normal person) there will be no discernible difference. If there were, the difference would be negligible (again, depends on the person's eyes). If you, however, hold it a centimeter from your eyes (like either a) a blind person or b) a person looking to go blind) then yes, there is a difference.

Again with the 'you WILL see that I'm right's? ugh.

Why did I stress on the 'stop stating your opinion as fact' so much? Because you were the one who told me to do that first. Double standard much?

I suggested that we get 'back on topic' a few posts ago, yet you didn't stop (not that I mind- your posts are hilarious :D ). Not gonna stop bc you told me to.

EDIT: Serious question. Why do you think that the only widgets available are weather widgets?

Sorry to disappoint ajarnfalang,

but i'm not the Channel Five Weather Man,
but i wish i was on his salary!
Read your post with amusement in the forest exercising my favourite hunting dog,

widgets, live icon or notification system whatever, call them what you like,
I said that i think, Widgets functionality would be a step forward for Apple

Some people, llike sea fishermen or pilots need "exciting" info like weather, instantly, at their fingertips,

I don't need to see the stupid temperature outside on my screen all the time. What are you? The channel 5 weather man?

Someone needs to see the "stupid temperature outside"
For prob a very good reason,

Sports score change quickly, so constantly updated info would be a step forward,
And, yes i agree, I don't think the next big iOS update will include widgets. Doesn't make sense.

But to me, and others, something could make sense.

Knowing how Apple works, they do not change, or admit mistakes quickly,
unless its something like the signal issue, which i read that Apple top brass where warned that the design could cause signal problems, but Steve Jobs? liked the design that much? it became what we have now.

Then came the case program.

Widgets will never exist in an iPhone the way they do in android. Forget it. Just get an android then.

I'll have a round of drinks on that with you,

I have an iPhone4, chosen against several Android models, so that tells you something?

Notification circle's are all OK, but what we want is instantly updated customised info on our home screens, not crap,

Why would you put up something you do not want? crap?
Clogging up your screen?

Hehe :D

But seriously...Pentile Matrix technology should have ended this thread...no?

The retina display is a game changer, plain and simple. I remember the first day I used it after 2 years of iPhone 3G usage and let me tell you, it makes a difference.

Your delight that Apple finally improved their display is shared by everyone, but it's hardly a "game changer" to other users of higher resolution devices for years.

Until recently most VGA and WVGA+ phones were non-Pentile LCD and some were print (aka "retinal") quality. For example:

2007 - Toshiba Portege G900 - 311 ppi LCD
2008 - Sony Ericsson XPERIA X1 - 311 ppi LCD
2009 - HTC Touch Diamond2 - 292 ppi LCD

As for today's tendency toward Pentile arrangements, I admit it took me a few days to get used to going from a WVGA LCD to a WVGA AMOLED. I missed the tack sharpness of tiny text at first, but since I always reflow the text as larger anyway, it wasn't that big a deal to me compared to the color depth. I can understand if sharpness is more important to, say, someone who needs to do remote desktops.

Fact-checking? Wow, pathetic. You need a girlfriend.

I dont. I've got a wife.
You mean you don't back up your posts with a proper factual basis before making them?!

Also, that statement wasn't made against you.
(Psst...I'm on your side on this argument. It IS just a screen.)

Ahhhh, I was debating whether or not to add a smiley face to make sure you realized it was sarcasm. ;)

I know! Haha.

How did this thread become a iPhone vs Windows Phone vs Android thread?

Can't we all just make an objective comparison of the screen alone and nothing else please?

So many flaming fanbois in this thread :(
