While I used to play this a lot back in the Gameboy days, Jump & Runs nowadays aren't that interesting to me anymore. I'll wait for a more immersive Super Mario World or a Zelda. That this can be done very well on a phone I think Oceanhorn proves.

The missus downloaded it so I gave it a try. Awful. Perhaps it's because I've been playing Mario games longer than some people on this forum have been breathing, but the dissonance in operation is unbelievably jarring. Add on a $10 purchase for an endless runner with always-connected DRM? Hard pass. Mrs Grey declined as well.

I'm the same, been playing Mario games since before they were "Super" but I actually quite like this effort. Considering the limitations of the device they've done a good job. Yeah it's an auto runner, but it's an auto runner with a damn sight more finesse than any other I've played on iOS.

The only thing I think they've done wrong is the DRM. Sure, have it in place to begin with, no problem with that. But once we've paid our money they shouldn't need it on constantly. They could have it check in now and again to verify the purchase, they don't need it active 24/7. It would be simple to verify occasionally and disable any account that hasn't legally bought the game. It's something I expect them to rectify in an update once they realise how limiting it is for some people. But I'm not too bothered, it's rare that I have no connection whatsoever.

Not for me. I for one like to have complete control of the character. This game could have been Super Mario where you pass the levels doing you own thing and not just endless running. Also the internet connection is a fail.

Its not like todays phones are not more powerful than a snes or a 3ds for that matter. No wonder nintendo is falling behind.

I got sound on my iPhone 6s+ but I had to flip the mute switch off.

Thank you! Since I am on an iPad Pro I don't have a mute switch and somehow didn't realize that I've had mute on in the quick settings this whole time...it didn't affect music or video so I never noticed!

Same, I always leave my mute switch on but have volume turned up for youtube, music, etc... stuff like that. How interesting. lol.

Theirs got to be away around the in app purchase and share it with family... HAS too.. I refuse to spend $50 lol

An auto-runner with finesse, to my own mind, is the proverbial polished turd. That said, I'm very glad that you found something worthwhile. That can sometimes be a tall order on a mobile phone.

To me, it's not so much the technical limitation as the sour taste it leaves in my mouth at having one more corporation rubbing my nose in someone else's excrement (they want to deter pirates, therefore I cannot play something that I bought, legally, except under the condition of internet connectivity). To me, that's unacceptable. To others, not so much. I can appreciate both viewpoints.

Is this for iOS Only? For some reason thought it was coming to the Apple TV. I will get it anyway for my GrandKids but would be nice if on Apple TV as well.

My iPad Pro is my only iOS device so I kind of wish this worked in landscape mode. Even if they just rotated the portrait view and shrunk it (With black bars on either side) that would be better than having to hold the 12.9" iPad in portrait.

I like it so far but I'll probably wait for the Android version so I can play on my phone. Hopefully that doesn't take forever...

Little confused by the comments bitching about how all you can do is run and jump, when the controls/limitations of the game have been beaten to death before its release

I thought apple had something called family sharing that would let you share apps to about 5 people. I dont buy games but thought it worked for all apps

They do, but it doesn't extend to in app purchases.

Parts of the UI look hideous. Like iOS 6 & prior on steroids.

Lol, you must not have seen other Nintendo games or console UIs recently. Even worse.

If you link it to a Nintendo ID account, then you'll be able to share the in app purchase.

The in-app purchase appears to link to your Nintendo account that you set up at the start. My theory is that anyone using that Nintendo account and the same Apple ID should be able to hit "restore purchase" and play, but I haven't had a chance to test that theory just yet.
Nope. I can't even link my iPhone and iPad to the same Nintendo account. The helpful help says only one device can be linked at a time, so can't even swap between devices to play.

Strange game. It's Mario in name and visual only. I have played almost every Mario game but this is just a Mario skin on a runner game, not a real Mario Bros title.

I get the auto-run but auto-jump? That is a very odd choice since jumping is the whole backbone of alomst Mario game out there.

IMHO, not worth the ten bucks. Only worth it if Nintendo drops the internet connection requirement if you pay full price for it.

Nintendo made a mistake with the first 3 levels. They are too easy and boring. I was sold after getting to the first castle. I paid the $10 and love it. Once you get past that it feels like a regular mario game. It gets VERY challenging and has a lot of cool ideas. Typical mario game.

is this a sponsored blog post? nintendo couldnt write more complete coverage.

No. This article has absolutely no affiliation with Nintendo. But I'm glad you noticed it was complete coverage — that was the goal.

Am I the only one for whom this game has no sound?

Make sure your physical mute switch is turned off above the volume controls on your iPhone.

I felt the same after only playing the first 3 levels. Unfortunately I had to pay the $10 to get the real mario experience which starts in the 2nd set of levels. Doesn't apple let you get a refund on an app before a certain amount of time? It may be worth trying it after the first castle for those on the fence.
