Could they do something other than quadruple the resolution to maintain a high pixel density without requiring developers to make changes to existing applications? For example, instead of doubling the vertical and horizontal pixels, could they multiply them by 1.5?

needs to be a multiple of 2 - so, we could see 4x resolution on a 4" screen -

1920 x 960, but no idea if that's technically feasible at this point in time.

I guess I am in the minority in saying the current size is fine with me. I mean there really isnt anything I do on my phone that a size increase would make better. I usually have my iPad on me as well

Same size screen but a much improved iOS would make me just as happy

Crap, I'm going to have to buy this thing and ditch my 4s if it has the redesign, 4" screen, and LTE. That's just too many upgrades to be able to pass on it. It's gonna be a long 6 months :D

Can you imagine a 5.3" iPhone...with a "retina display?" Let's all just stop and seriously think about that for a minute.

Yeah, I've seen the Note....

And my thoughts? HELL NO!!!!! Not as my phone that I'm supposed to take everywhere. Maybe if I were a student with a backpack I wouldn't mind having it as a PDA, as well as a small phone that went with me everywhere (and it just going with me to my classes).

Sorry, but I want to be able to fit other things in my purse than just my cellphone. And be able to easily fit it in my pocket if I have to.

Its a sad sad day, as i completely agree with the above. I've shared the queues with you all
on release day for many years but my patience has finally run out.

I am genuinely disappointed at Apple in relation to the upgrade cycle of iPhone. And after
30+ iPhones since the iPhone 2G in July 2007 i've finally come to the realization that i've
been looking at the same old iPhone 4 design since the 24th of June 2010 and that is long
enough!

Apple used to be fresh, they used to be the best but having looked at some other
smartphones i've watched in the hands of friends over the last 18 months i think they
really have lost their edge. Now its us, 'Apple fans', with the old technology in our hands
as others look on with brand new devices.

I sold my last iPhone today and until Apple start working to my timetable and giving me
what i want and need in a handset, i cant see myself coming back anytime soon. Shame
on you Apple!

Really? You bolded your opinion. Cause apparently your opinion is so important that it must be bolded cause it must count more than everyone else's opinion.

And apple has to cater to you, eh? Forget anyone else. Forget if you aren't even in the market they are aimed or even the majority of the people.

No, I don't have a problem with you saying you aren't going to buy an apple cause it doesn't fit your needs. What I have a problem with is your entitlement attitude with this whole post of yours. As if what you want is most important and damned what anyone else wants! Shame on apple for not giving you what you want.

Let me say, I want a small phone. I want APple to keep the same size. if they must change the phone, I want them to at most put a 4" size screen. I hate this trend of making phones bigger and bigger, it forgets that mobile phones are first and foremost mobile. And yes, I know they are more than phones (I barely use mine as a phone honestly), but they are still mobile devices that are supposed to be easy to take with you everywhere. So I think this whole trend is stupid.

Just to let you know that your opinion isn't the only one and there are people who have very different opinions than yours. And here is one person who would be praising Apple for keeping the same size.

In the end, Apple will do what they think will get them the most money. I for one hope that means not making some hugontious phone. But I may lose out on that. And then I'll have to decide if I'm willing to get over it or if it's time to change ecosystems. Luckily for Apple I have so many apps it will be painful to change ecosystems and also most companies making small smartphones these days are the cheap ass crap so most likely I'll get over it (and I doubt they'll make one as huge as the Note though. Apple tries to keep at a happy medium cause they are trying for a one size fits all so they can't get too much in one direction or they'll lose too many other people).

The 3.5" was perfect back in 2007 when it first was introduced, and when we only did a little web surfing and basic game-playing. But that size is wholeheartedly insufficient today with all the " stuff" that we can do on a phone!!!

What did we do in 2007 that was so different than now? There was google maps, youtube, web browsing, games. What do we do with our phones now? Youtube, web browsing, games. I don't understand how we've changed so much to where "no no, people used phones differently back then. Now we browse and watch videos!". We do the same things. You just want a bigger screen. We're not talking the 1960's here

I'm fine with 3.5 right now, but i can admit apple should offer at least one more size option similar to how they do their macbook pros and really, that would be the only way to solve this debate about what people want. Apple releases a 3.5 next to a 4.3 and we compare sales. Most regular people (not people that browse phone enthusiast forums) don't complain about the screen size. But if they were given an option to get a bigger one that kept the overall phone size pocketable and slim? I feel like the 3.5 would get left behind.

A lot of iPhone users need to tone it down with calling anything that isn't 3.5 a tablet. I had a few 4.3 inch screened phones and didn't like how they fit in my pocket, but to assert that its entering "tablet territory"? Come on. Most of us are comparing chunky android phones to our slim iPhones. If we went 4.3 but kept it super slim and narrow, it would fit a hell of a lot better than my old thunderbolt/rezound. Most of us agree that 4inches even is the perfect compromise. Slightly larger, but still just as pocketable if done the right way. I don't think the iPhone is an area where, like the macbook, they'd do separate screen options. I think its more one size fits all, and 4 inches would be just about perfect for anyone. Those used to bigger screens wouldn't feel such a shock switching to an iPhone with a 4 incher. Even though smaller than 4.3+ phones, it wouldn't pop out as "damn thats small" when trying it for the first time. Meanwhile, those with 3.5 inch phones won't mind that much considering its the same overall size

4" screen on the iPhone would be excellent!

And 5.3" like the note? No thanks. Guys would have to start buying purses if it was that big.

The next iPhone needs to be between 3.8" and 4.3" else Apple will lose a majority of its customers. I agree that 3.5" is not very comfortable with gameplay or YouTube videos. Keep in mind this is a smart phone & should be able to easily handle computer-like tasks.

4 inches: unacceptable. I wouldn't care how it was redesigned!! That amounts to nothing more than yet ANOTHER incremental upgrade. I'm sick of this shish!!! And I am so tired of hitting a "submit" button by accident before I'm done composing a comment when I was intending to press or do something else all because of this microscopic screen!!!!

I challenge any of you fanboys to walk into a Best Buy or AT&T store where they have working phone demos and take a gander at what Samsung has done with the Galaxy Note and that stunning 5.3" display.

Can you imagine a 5.3" iPhone...with a "retina display?" Let's all just stop and seriously think about that for a minute.
Have you seen the iPad? Sure, the screen is nice, but it's a tablet. 5.3" may look cool, but it's too big for a phone. I'm fine with 3.5" and 4".

Just hold it closer to your eyes. I've never even thought about the 3.5" screen being too small. Still, I wouldn't mind a 4" screen even if it means a bigger phone. The iPhone would still be small enough with a 4" screen. I'll have to see about 4.3" though.

Dear god

No after 4 years with the same screen and all the rumours a 4 inch screen which is .5 inch bigger the sightly larger screen can't be that devastating on our pockets and won't hurt our gaming or app experience.

But think about the cases, accessories, etc that will no longer work if they make it bigger. That's the real problem.

4.3" or no dice for me. Falling behind to other screens. If you have actually used a 4.3" amoled screen then you will see how much the 3.5" screen sucks.

You've really said it all in one post there Tigress and believe it or not proved my point
in more ways than one.

Firstly, yes i posted in bold, i have bought 28 iPhones since 2007 and wanted people to
read what i had to say above. To give my two cents about the iPhone which i rarely do.
And today was a big decision for me to finally leave a brand i have trusted in for many
years and i don't feel i've to apologize to you, or anybody for that.

Apple has to give the customer what they want, and in my opinion (and likely 99% of
others) the most innovative, creative and wealthy electronics company in the world can
do better than 'ONE' 'BRAND' new phone every two years. Especially when every other
manufacturer on the planet is releasing at least three to four new handsets every year.
Why is this? Its because they want to get the premium price out of us every time, and
we're foolish enough to queue up for it!

You want a small phone, i want a slightly larger one. Apple will likely meet us in the
middle at 4". But the point is there will likely be only one phone released and thats for
another 12 to 15 months, like it or not! Thats not what i want because there will be
dozens of improvements in the interim. I need more choice and Apple are not giving
it to me, so i'll find it elsewhere.

Just to let you know that your opinion isn't the only one and there are people who have
very different opinions than yours

I'm under no illusions, but my opinion is as valid as the next.

Luckily for Apple I have so many apps it will be painful to change ecosystems

Thats exactly what they want. I cant praise my Mac and other Apple products enough
but Apple build its products so you cant live without them. Nothing syncs as well as
an iPhone and a mac. But despite this their delays between new releases (of iPhone)
are ridiculous. Its likely to hit the 24 months before the new generation of iPhone comes
which is a complete joke.

I believe 4.5 inch is the biggest and nicest fit for our pockets 5 inch is getting closer to this rumoured iPad mini.

Personally, I don't mind if it looks the same and has the same screen size, as long as it has LTE and they make further improvements to the camera.

But the mockups look good, so if looks like that I'll be happy, too. :)

Oh thank goodness. I was just about to reply to someone in the last thread who took issue with my description of the 4's as "clunky".

Clunky, as in, not sleek.

The original iPhone was still the nicest design. If they weren't so horribly underpowered to run the current OS, I'd be happy to haul one of those around again.

I disagree with your reasons for not buying it, but I wouldn't buy it either. I've said it before and I'll say it again - that mockup is wrong. The top part with the speaker doesn't match up with the bottom part with the home button at all. It is way too thin and Apple would never have something so asymmetrical.

Oh yeah, that's totally fake.

Sorry, but I want a phone I can comfortably operate with one hand. Samsung Note isn't one of them. An incremental screen size bump is exactly what I want. 4-4.3" is perfect. Anything larger is IMO, too big for a phone. I don't need or want my phone pretending to be a tablet. I've got an iPad for that and a MBA for heavier stuff and a desktop for even heavier stuff..

99% of people agree with you? Source please. Also, Apple is on an annual release cycle, not two years, but keep up the gross exaggeration. Oh, and the only reason why the other manufacturers are releasing so many products every year is because they are all, when you consider the total package and not just stats and useless extras, trash. They are throwing all they can at the wall hopping something will stick. It smacks of desperation. Apple releases new products, and updates their current line of products, when they have some legitimate improvements to offer. The emphasis is on quality of the product, in every aspect. That doesn't just mean having inflated stats, i.e. useless hardware, in a constant upgrade cycle.

You want a small phone, i want a slightly larger one. Apple will likely meet us in the middle at 4". Dozens of improvements in the interim? Care to mention anything concrete, or is this just another artificial talking point? And Apple will likely keep the same screen size and phone design, it is still the most elegant and well crafted phone, from a build-quality perspective, on the market, and that isn't even taking into consideration nothing competes right now with iOS and the diversity of Apps it offers.
