My guess is that even with a quarter of the market share, Apple profits are heads and shoulders above each of those other companies.

Why does that first chart say "HP dominates in 3rd place?" HP are the dominators of the 3rd place position?

windows 7 (UI) is not that bad.

Damning with faint praise.

No, sorry, really not acceptable unless one is a Clown Arts major. MS designers have never been good at the whole positive/negative elements thing, or using more than an 8-bit color palette and bit-mapped system fonts suitable for an impact printer. Win 7 is an improvement, no question...like a Chevy Aveo is an improvement over a Vega.

OS X ain't perfect either, just a lot easier to use and look at all day long.

Maybe because they have way bigger piece of cake than others in that chart (4th, 5th place and so on).

Is this another D'oh! story?

An equivalent headline would be "Nearly 3/4 of college students choose Windows laptops".

Wrong. The 27% is ownership, not sales today. Apple's market share has been growing tremendously over the last years, so the 27% is likely an average between 15% Mac sales four years ago and 40% Mac laptop sales today. So what about "Apple sells almost as many laptops to students as the rest of the industry combined". Or if we take revenue: "Apple's laptop revenues exceeds the revenues of the rest of the industry combined". Or if we take profits: "Tears fill the eyes of laptop makers' CEOs when they look at the profits that Apple makes".

Great news...

Too bad the all-mighty Steve Jobs decided all computers are "trucks" and has stagnated OSX development since 2007. I love how the fan-boys haven't even noticed.

Hardware since the Macbook Pro unibody introduction has also been pretty unremarkable too in my opinion

Oh well...have fun with dumbed-down crap apps and locked-down iTunes shopping-cart devices (ipad)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mac_OS_X_Snow_Leopard

Released: August 28, 2009

- Cocoa Finder with 64bit support
- Grand Central for support of multiple CPU cores (ie the 12 core Mac Pro)
- Exchange support in Mail, Address book and iCal.

The majority of the changes happened under the hood.

As an graduate student owned MBP for at least 1 year on campus, I have to say the MBP sucks. I have to bring the stupid mini display port and multi-card reader all the time. I have to always leave the virtual machine on because some webpage does not work under safari, which makes the computer really hot and shortens the battery life a lot. I have thought of installing windows locally via boot camp but then what's the point of having a Mac?

Apple is only good at producing exclusive devices and I think a Mac is generally good for home entertainment, not for work.

Anyway I've ordered an HP tm2t 12'' with core i3 and ATI HD5450 to replace the MBP. To prevent from missing a Mac too much, I've also ordered a 2010 Mac mini for using at home.

That's very impressive performance considering the least expensive Apple notebook is still $1000, and the average Apple notebook probably sells for more like $1500. I wasn't surprised when that survey revealed that Apple had a huge share of the $1000+ notebook market, but I'm impressed they command a majority against much cheaper alternatives from Dell et al.

Cool!

What the heck were you doing that you needed a card reader? Also, the port is built into the computer, I assume you meant an adapter for it, which again I'd have to ask, what the heck kind of classes are you taking?:confused:

Have you thought about trying the Mac OS X versions of either Firefox or Google Chrome for those troublesome webpages?

LOL. Or use Firefox/Chrome.

Edit: Beat me to it

The answer to this "problem" is obvious - and has been answered by other commenters above. Graduate student you say? ;)

With an employer-supplied HP EliteBook 6930p sitting in front of me right now, all I can say is good luck with that.

Just bought a HP Envy 14, in my sig, for college and games. Same weight and thickness as my plastic Macbook, yet has a slightly larger, 1600x900 screen, an i5 450m processor, backlit keyboard, and an ATI mobility 5650 GPU (best possible in a laptop this size). Got it for $930. The only difference between it and a Macbook Pro is the OS. Fits in a 15" MBP case fine. The design is SO close to a MBP. And it is so much cooler than a Mac too. 38C (100F) while watching videos, browsing the web, etc. right now.

Well, this is where you're wrong. Apple designs OS X with the right amount of "pretty" in order to not cloud up the UI with unnecessary crap like Windows 7's over-use of transparency and animated fade-in/fade-out of window and apps. Not to say that I wouldn't mind if Apple allowed more customizable options in terms of color such as the scroll bars but other than that, it's always been Windows that I've had the desire to change because the default UI sorta sucks and many people feel the same way which is why they end up installing Rocket Dock/Stacks Docklet or any other fake docks to make their Windows machine more "Mac like". I guess the Mac OS isn't as boring as you stated. :p

Do you know the word "opinion"? Are you that insecure? If I just say I don't like mac computers, do you have to put down the other system to prove that you made the right choice? Do you like your computer because you paid a little more?

You must have bought with BCB and before they made the 1600x900 screen a $200 option. No BCB, and now they charge $100 more than they originally did for the base model with the 1600x900 display, means your config is now $1309+tax.

For your sake I hope your laptop arrived in great condition. People around here have been bitching about Apple's quality control. HP's quality control on the Envy 14 is far worse than Apples. And Im not talking about anal nit picky things that alot on here complain about. Im talking about serious QC issues.

Just realised: The article lists "Gateway" which is owned by Acer, and "Compaq" which is part of HP as separate entities; in reality HP would have 19 percent, and Acer would have 8 or likely more if eMachines is in there not mentioned with a percent or two.

Think different? Too bad most all of them will have to learn Windows when they find job.

Oh, you are so funny. By the time today's freshmen have finished, Ballmer will have to learn how to use a Macintosh to find a new job.

My perspective on Macs these days is to like the OS, but not the hardware or the available software. OS X is a nice OS, and I like using it more than Windows. However, these days Windows 7 is "good enough" for me, and when the better hardware for less money is Windows based, and when I like to play games, usually ones that are Windows-only, a PC seems better for me.

I really like OS X though. Too bad that's it I like. I've been doing some tweaks to my PC's to make them more OS X-like, while enjoying the better specs and programs I need and want.

Are you aware that Firefox has been available for many years for OS X as well as Opera?

Oh, wait.... you are just a lying troll.

The bigger the better. :D I am in my second year of college and I bought my MBP 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo 15" with 2BG of Ram, 250 GB of HD, and the Nvidia GeForce 8600m GT. I use mine for everything, from editing my 1080p racing videos to watching movies to being a TV to all my homework. I LOVE MY MBP and won't buy anything else.

MBP & Mac OS X 10.5 = Simple & Powerful
:apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple::apple:

It's good that you're happy and all, but I just can't help mentioned that I bought a Core i5 VAIO for $860 that completely kills your MBP in all the things you mentioned, and I can only imagine how much you paid for it. For that reason alone I cannot support a company like Apple, so I'm selling my MacBook, that cost me so much, yet had so many design flaws.

In other words - "Apples are expensive, college is expensive - and people who can afford college are more likely to be able to afford Apples".

But if college is expensive, shouldn't those who go to college have less available for their laptop purchases that those who don't go to college?

Depends. I would hate to be an engineering student, CS major, graphics designer, or video major, stuck with a 13" Macbook Pro, let alone a whitebook.

I graduated top of my CS department when I was in undergrad using my MBP every day. It was the kids with Windows laptops that had trouble. Trying to accomplish all that a CS degree demands without a unix based operating system is just a whole extra headache I didn't have to deal with.

If you don't like Mac computers why are you here? Who is the insecure one again?
