You must have bought with BCB and before they made the 1600x900 screen a $200 option. No BCB, and now they charge $100 more than they originally did for the base model with the 1600x900 display, means your config is now $1309+tax.

For your sake I hope your laptop arrived in great condition. People around here have been bitching about Apple's quality control. HP's quality control on the Envy 14 is far worse than Apples. And Im not talking about anal nit picky things that alot on here complain about. Im talking about serious QC issues.

And who the F besides HP charges for recovery disks(win 7 installation disk + drivers)?

Yup, got it with BCB. Incredible price!

My laptop has actually been excellent quality, other than a certain battery life issue which they're working with me on. But the support is excellent, and I expected worse, being an early adopter and all. And you can't play games this well on something this light anywhere else. The screen is also amazing. Far better than anything else I've seen.

Released: August 28, 2009

- Cocoa Finder with 64bit support
- Grand Central for support of multiple CPU cores (ie the 12 core Mac Pro)
- Exchange support in Mail, Address book and iCal.

The majority of the changes happened under the hood.

None of those changed my computing experience (except for introducing new and unacceptable bugs). These are really service-pack level enhancements, but they were packaged into a "new" operating system.

Steve Jobs himself even mentioned that people have been taken off OSX development and put into iphone development. Normally we would have heard about 10.7 at WWDC. Not surpassingly, not a single word was said about it, which makes me suspicious that they're not really developing anything.

But if college is expensive, shouldn't those who go to college have less available for their laptop purchases that those who don't go to college?

He forgot the govt gives you "free money". Not really free but alot of people treat student loans as such.

Poor people can and do go to school. They get around $6000 in pell grants these days, plus alot of schools offer free tuition to students who are 1st generation college students whos parents income falls below some precentage(140%?) of the poverty line for a family of four.

Then there are student loans. Poor people go to school. They just rack up more debt.

It's good that you're happy and all, but I just can't help mentioned that I bought a Core i5 VAIO for $860 that completely kills your MBP in all the things you mentioned, and I can only imagine how much you paid for it. For that reason alone I cannot support a company like Apple, so I'm selling my MacBook, that cost me so much, yet had so many design flaws.

I believe you've posted on the wrong site. Here's the link to the site I think you were looking for.

Are you aware that Firefox has been available for many years for OS X as well as Opera?

Oh, wait.... you are just a lying troll.

I was waiting and waiting and waiting... for an updated 11~12'' MacBook Air.

I placed an order for HP TM2T yesterday

Im not saying the Envy 14 is bad, but they have had a lot of problems. Its to0 bad, their major selling point, the screen, they had to go and make it more expensive.

Have they offered you a free battery slice yet? Alot of people have gotten cash back or a battery slice for complaining about the battery life which is horrible, especially for the size of battery in it.

I don't like Sony, at all, but at the same time I'm not blinded by brand, so I'm willing to buy one of their computers, after much research, rather than just buying what's given to me by one company.

So US educational level decreases gradually and macbook sales rise...
Hmmm.. :D

It's all loans and fake hype as I see it.
So much more better options out there for much less.

I really would like to find out why people like to pay more. Really. no flame no crap. What drives you to pay more for less. It's a marketing miracle.

It's not the only thing that is special about colleges. It's where young people want to "show up" by buying Macs and $300 jeans. They grow out of it soon after they graduate ;)

Think different? Too bad most all of them will have to learn Windows when they find job.
You must be joking. They have to have basic computer skills, know how to use MS Office or similar packages. Chances are, however that everyone will have learned how to use windows before enrolling in University.

You got me. It's true that I want a light MBA and when it comes out I'm 95% sure that I'm gonna buy it on day 1 (then decide which one to keep), but I it doesn't change things that I hated on current form of MacBook Pro

Yes. It's all marketing. Jobs' sends us a new product e-mail, drones line up, and once we get it we put it up in our :apple: shrines, unopened.

We just look at it (because Apple products have absolutely no value besides being well marketed). Despite the fact that Apple's been making notebooks for nineteen years. For nineteen years sheeple have been snapping them up to hang on their walls.

If you don't like Mac computers why are you here? Who is the insecure one again?

it is not your business why I am here and I don't have to give you any explanation to you.

Just because I don't want to make you cry, I'll tell you why. I have and ipod touch and an iphone. Just because I like the iphone it doesn't mean that I have to worship and idolize Steve Jobs and his computers. I respect him a lot for what he has done, but i don't have to like everything he does.

Please, don't tell me you drive truck and that you are from Arizona. You sound like one of those people.

Service packs fix bugs. You will never see a full version upgrade of the kernel with a service pack. The kernel was rewritten for Snow Leopard to be able to take advantage of multiple cores.

What unacceptable bugs are you talking about? Most of your bugs may be actually caused by third party hacks that you have installed.

Then why not stick to the iToys forums and we'll continue informed and intelligent discussions in the rest of forums? Deal?

Because in certain cases, paying more will get you what you want and I still haven't found anything with the consistent build quality that macs have.

I've fixed hundreds of PC's, and it seems ones that are built to last are few and far between until you start spending in the Mac price range anyway.

Is a MBP really necessary for a freshman?

Depending on their uses, the MBP does add firewire and an SD card slot (when comparing the 13" models). For the $200 I would go the MBP even as a freshman.

<snip>Every knows Apple computers can't do anything and PCs are perfect. The only reason anyone buys an Apple is because Steve Jobs swans his sexiness on stage.

LOL

College kids ready know that Mac's allow them to boot Windoz if they really need it. Add to that they have experienced Apple products like the iPod, iPhone, and now the iPad.

Glad to see this trend.

From a UI design point of view, Windows was ugly in 1995, 2001, and is still ugly today.

Mac OS beauty > Windows IU

Not to mention how much time is saved from dealing with Windows and DLL's and such. Been a solid Mac user for I guess coming on to 10 years now. No sleepless nights trying to figure out why something is not working under Windows.

Nice pic :)

This is the halo effect from the iPod/iTunes kicking in.

Wished I had said the same in my above comments :)

The thing is that you have to look at this as an investor. It's easy to say "roughly 70% don't use Apple" to compare Windows to Mac OS.

But as an investor, you want a company with a big piece of the pie. In these freshman numbers and in overall numbers, you find Apple with a decent percentage compared to others. But not one company with any thing close to a majority.

Now in any particular comparison, how can Apple gain? Mostly from Windows users switching to Mac OS.

How would HP or Dell ever grow and possibly get over 50% eventually? Most likely by buying out other companies. What significant difference does Dell offer compared to HP to win over many of their customers? (Just to give an example).

Buying out another company to gain in these rankings is not a profitable venture. It's just the opposite.

Apple really needs to compete with itself. It needs to be innovative and offer new software and products to tempt people over to a different OS. And it needs to keep the customers it has happy.

In looking at investment in Apple, Dell, or HP - my iPhone app for stocks has shown that in the past two years since Sept '09 Apple has been on a steady up swing from like early '09 at 78 a share to todays close at 261. About the same time frame Dell was as low as 8 a share and closed at 13; with no steady upswing. In looking at HP, the results are mixed. They traded at a low of about 25 and until maybe March went to 54, now down to 42.

Same here. I have a Mac and a Win7 machine on the same KVM switch. About the only thing keeping the Windows machine here are a handful of apps that has no counterpart on the Mac for various reasons. <snip>

Why not something like Bootcamp?

Was that back in the days when Wozniak was working at HP?

Actually even before Woz's HP years in the 70s. If you really want to get into that history, the granddaddy of the HP Calculators is the HP-9100A. That was a huge baby and a desktop size machine. Some say that this model was Woz's inspiration to do a whole computer in that size. While Woz was at HP the "Fit in Bill Hewitt's shirt pocket to measurement" HP-35 came about. I don't know if he worked on it, but I'm sure he knew of it.

Maybe, just maybe the stereotype of Macs being for snobby musical design freak hipsters will disappear.

Very true. One thing that people seem to have forgotten is that Macs do Windows too. So by buying a Mac, you get a solid laptop and best of both worlds if you want it.

What I've seen with several family members is they get a Mac with the intention of installing Windows... within 2 months, they're all on the MacOS and not using windows anymore.

Like you said... they need to keep the hardware and software on top with innovative features and solid designs. I keep hoping we're going to see something totally new and "wow" in a future OSX since MacOSX has been leap frogging Windows for a while.

BTW... something else no one has mentioned is the ramp on the Mac side... the charts show that Macs are on a steep growth curve in education... this is most important and probably makes Dell and HP worried.

I'm going to broadcast school armed with my
i7 Macbook 15
1680x1050 Glossy
500 GB HD
8GB RAM
and a NEW iPod touch gen 4 when they come out.

No offense, but who the hell are you talking about? Some deranged stereotype about rich college kids or something?

I buy my jeans for $10 a pop when their on sale at Old Navy. I never want to have to spend more than $20 on a single clothing item other than shoes. Sadly it gets harder and harder as time passes and prices rise.

Don't live in a stereotypical world, open your eyes and realize that there is no cookie cutter model for a human being.

Also, I worked odd jobs the entire summer before my freshman year to get my 13" macbook pro. I bought it because I'm a CS major, and I can run any OS I want or need to on it, easily.
