Agreed about more options. However, I don't think it is illegal. Apple and AT&T took a risk.....and it has paid off. Both had to invest time/money. There has to be a reward for taking risks or else companies would not take them.

Probably right about the legality. It just seems like more competition would be better for all. Especially for Apple at this point. I'm sure there are many people who are yet to switch to the iphone because ATT is not a good option for them right now. I would think iphone sales would go up if more networks were an option.

At one point I put myself in that category. Verizon is a much better option for me for several reasons. However, after waiting to get a smart phone I realize now that I am not in a rush to commit to a costly contract. The smart phones look real nice but so does putting my money into other places. For now I'll stick with my old out of contract phone with simple text options even if iphone moves to Verizon.

I was skeptical of users complaining so much in SF having lived there myself for 7 years with nary a problem. I moved to DC the summer the original iphone came out and it was like all hell broke loose. I have no problems in the DC area, but when I was back in SF last month for a week, the service was truly awful. I can only imagine how bad NYC must be.

AT&T in SF is pretty bad these days. I work in SF and up to May lived on 15th and Castro. SF probably has one of the highest density of iPhone users and it sucks. I love my iPhone and therefore stay with AT&T but it should be opened up to other carriers.

Im happy with my service.. no dropped calls yet.. great 3G coverage

When you see complaints remember:

PEOPLE ARNT SO EXCITED WITH THEIR SERVICE THAT THEY ARE GUNNA RUN AND MAKE A BLOG OR POST....

only if you have a problem are you going to voice it online..

So that 5 percent of people are HERE ...they other 95 are just happy so they dont have a reason to go talk about it.

Before anyone values this survey; you first need to know how many people, and how / when this survey took place. I mean. Don't go ask new iPhone owners about anything... before they've had a change using it first :D

That is because you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet. I have no issues with ATT or my ip4. I think most of complaints are from non-ATT users.

But the majority of the complaints I've read regarding ATT were found on the internet.

I could say that I am generally pleased with ATT.

The whole country is not San Fran and NYC.

On the other hand, I've had plenty of dropped calls in Ann Arbor MI. On the other hand, now that I have the iphone 4, I've had zero dropped calls. On the other hand, it's summertime, which means 40,000 rich University of Michigan students, with their 35,000 iphones, are off jamming their home networks right now.

I guess I'll find out in the fall, regarding AT&T and their "adequate coverage" . . .

Agreed, but it is probably where the highest density of iPhone users and probably the most unhappy AT&T people are. Therefore you can not dismiss this on a Apple forum.

A lot of people say their coverage is fine because they life in a flat area with low population density. Cell Tower planning in these areas is fine.

Introduce tall buildings, population density and in SF case hills and you have a much bigger issue with the need for micro towers all over the place.

I'm very happy with AT&T so far. Using the iPhone4 in the Cincinnati and Dayton area and have had no problems at all with the phone or the service.

WOW... you are very uniformed. Where do you get this garbage that Verizon's 3G is equal to AT&T's EDGE?

I didn’t say it was equal, I said it was a much more fair comparison than Verizon’s deceptive comparison of their own 3G to AT&T’s. It’s apples and oranges (no puns).

Can Verizon now do voice and data at the same time nationwide, like AT&T can? What speeds does it average nationwide? Everything I’ve read suggests performance that does NOT stack up to AT&T 3G. Here’s one recent source. If this is “garbage,” or old information, I will be delighted to know the real facts. Please provide them :)

I have zero loyalty to AT&T and would consider Verizon if/when their service and price can compete. But right now AT&T is providing me with excellent 3G voice+data (at the same time!) coverage, and I see no viable alternatives.

the network was pretty bad up until late december 2009. i used to do speedtests and was pissed off how i'm paying for HSPA data and i get dial up speeds. lately it's been too good. it even works in the NYC subway. and indoors a lot of former dead spots now have signal. and it's fast. twice the speed of SDSL depending on location and time

in real world tests verizon can barely do DSL speeds

Texting Racket

As long as AT&T continues to charge for texting as if it costs them money to support, I will not agree that I'm "generally happy" with AT&T. Charging for texting is so 2000 and should be thrown in with the data plan. It creates virtually no overhead on their network.

That IS ridiculous. (And it’s not just AT&T that does it.) Luckily I don’t use text... phones can handle voice now :) And I’ve taught my text-mad friends how to send texts to my AIM account (and I can reply too). So I just use Meebo :)

I started with AT&T before they branched off AT&T Corp, They Then became AT&T Wireless and separate entity. Mind you AT&T Wireless just before going Cingular was a hard time with quality of service. They then went to Cingular and then back to AT&T Corp. Now I have been with the same groups of Companies (1999-Current) (1 AT&T Corp, 2. AT&T Wireless 3. Cingular 4. AT&T Corp. (AT&T Mobility) 11 years of service to them. I count not be happier, Customer service to coverage for me. It is sad that the ones making the noise are the ones that influence everyone. (Engadget, BGR, Gizmodo, Tech Crunch, CNET) These blogs should be shut down for slander. I am tired of the network crap, Verizon is better and so on. Let the iPhone go to Verizon and please everyone leave, I am in a great belief that the CDMA network on VZW's end will cripple.

Make money fast

Curious. This study contradicts the Consumer Reports survey published earlier this year indicating that all four major US mobile operators were mediocre at best.

Verizon score just a couple of points higher than the rest of the pack, but that margin is barely above the threshold of what CR considers to be statistically significant.

To put it another way, Verizon Wireless is a 37" giant in a land of three-foot midgets.

Sarcasm: Have you considered working within Verizon's special marketing venture? There, you will actually get paid for attacking non-Verizon providers!

For example, a slight change to your above comment could earn you $20 or more per hour:

Verizon scores way more points than the rest of the pack, and that margin seems to mean that Verizon users are extremely happy.

See how much better that sounds? Isn't that worth $20?

I have no complaints with AT&T wireless. Their landline service, former Bell South, is more expensive than wireless (for my needs). I also get a 23% discount from my job! MC

Still sucks....

....where I work in downtown NY City. I love my phone in NJ but not during business hours. If this is not corrected by next June (either new towers or Verizon) bye bye iPhone. :(

Chicago

Sucks in Chicago... and nobody asked me if I'm happy!

My experience in Chicago is very good. Live in the western burbs and work downtown. Never an issue with my original iPhone, and none with my iP4.
