count me among the satisfied ... with an asterisk

I'll reiterate this point (for the umpteenth time in this thread):
The article is spot on to use the modifer "Despite a very vocal group of detractors".

I am very satisfied with AT&T, but I will quickly point out that I personally use my iPhone for actual phone calls very rarely; so perhaps I just don't experience all the issues that I would if I actually used voice calling more frequently.
Also, I'm in the Boston area, a heavy iPhone area for sure (though not as bad as New York). While there are pockets of slow data or occasional dropped calls, the AT&T network is WAAAAAAAAY better now than it was 6 years ago (when I joined the old AT&T, before it was Cingular).

I'm sorry for the people who are having issues, but I can't be dissatisfied on their behalf. I will certainly not be switching to T-Mobile or Verizon if/when the iPhone joins those carriers.

That is because you shouldn't believe everything you read on the internet. I have no issues with ATT or my ip4. I think most of complaints are from non-ATT users.

AT&T's performance is actually fine in medium-density suburban areas where the network is lightly used. Densely populated areas are an insufferable mess. I drop calls daily in Chicago and in New York... AT&T performance is abysmal and there really is NO EXCUSE.

Why would non-users complain about a network they don't have any contact with? That's just a silly nonsensical statement.

I have friends in Tennessee (Memphis) and right across the border in Mississippi who also have horrible coverage... San Francisco is actually better now than it was last year but that's not saying too much...

My opinion is that AT&T drops the ball (and the call) in countless cities and towns across the country and to make matters worse they really don't care about their customers. This is based on places that I've traveled and the "customer service" people they employ who I've had the misfortune of dealing with.

Unless you live in a city or the middle of no where.

Tell me about it, I'm in Cisco Texas, 50 miles east of Abilene, 120 west of Fort Worth and have 5 bars of 3G! Oh, wait...you meant I shouldn't have it. Nevermind. I guess i'll turn 3G off so I can be in EDGE like I guess I'm supposed to be.

Of course, you have to remember that despite Verizon’s misleading ads, all 3G is not alike.

Verizon’s 3G is a lot more like AT&T’s EDGE: generally slower, and you can’t get an email while on the phone(!)

So as I understand it, the maps Verizon should probably compare to be FAIR would either be:

* Verizon’s reduced-speed, no-simultaneous data network, vs. AT&T’s reduced-speed, no-simultaneous data network. (That would be Verizon 3G vs. AT&T’s EDGE—which covers the US very well, just like Verizon.)

OR

* Verizon’s higher-speed, simultaneous-data network (which basically doesn’t exist) vs. AT&T’s higher-speed, simultaneous-data network (which covers most of the US population, albeit with some holes filled by EDGE).

But Verizon ads compare their LOW-end network to AT&T’s HIGH-END network, using the misleading term “3G” to make it seem they’re the same. Or to make it seem like AT&T doesn’t cover the country as well. This is pure deception.

(And yes, Verizon is improving all the time... but so is AT&T. 3G speeds have gone up for AT&T users, while Verizon still won’t let you look up something online while talking about it on the phone.)

WOW... you are very uniformed. Where do you get this garbage that Verizon's 3G is equal to AT&T's EDGE?

I have no complaints about their coverage or quality of coverage. What I cannot stand is their customer service. Their retail stores are horrible the people that work in them around here are rude, I actually had one tell me that she would rather I not even buy the phone if I wasn't going to buy any accessories because it ruins her "quota" or something to that effect. What's even worse is every time I go to an ATT store (not the resellers) I get some random crap added on my bill. Last time it was road side assistance.

Is there are mention of what percentage of this happy 73% live in the DC Metro area? I have 5 bars showing but still can't manage to make/receive a call most times. Quite intriguing....

I don't know where you are exactly, but I am in the DC Metro area - including in DC a lot...no problems for me.

I don't expect perfect performance - from AT&T, or any other carrier. They are all pretty much the same.

Works just fine for me

I think all the negativity about the network is blown out of proportion just like the problems with the iPhone 4 antenna. I've never had a problem with either. Seems like the Verizon folks and the Android folks are the ones making the most noise, and unfortunately people believe it.

AT&T is the only carrier that has a half-way decent signal by my house. And I'm in a populated area (Staten Island, NY). My wife and I both have work blackberrys, me AT&T, her Verizon. I get a MUCH MUCH better signal than she does. So I would have to be satisfied with AT&T by comparison...

(Plus independantly VZ cheated both me AND my wife on cell phone bills before we met!)

Good Quotes

"The iPhone is also the gift that keeps on giving: 77% of iPhone owners say they'll buy another iPhone, compared to 20% of Android customers who say they'll buy another Android phone."

"Our analysis explains why AT&T has bent over backward to keep its exclusive distribution deal with Apple as long as possible," Howe says. "Verizon has been regretting turning away Apple for the last three years."

Don't worry Android fans, the next Android phone should be out in a few minutes....there's always more.

Verizon....You declared today that it won't be until 2013 before your 4G-LTE is built out? 3 more years of regret.

We were with Cingular when AT&T bought them. We've been very happy with them and our iPhone 4s (our third iphones). We picked them up on launch day and have had no dropped calls and our network connectivity has been great.

I'd have to say that I'm very happy with my service from AT&T.

As long as my calls don't get dropped I have had no problems with them.

But from time to time I do get some drops and that can be a problem is your in a business conference call with a client. But you take the good with the bad.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A306 Safari/6531.22.7)

I walked into AT&T to see if I was elgible for iPhone 4. There was but one employee behind the counter so I had to wait on a customer who had lost her sim card. I noticed how polite and caring he was toward her, and I noticed the same when he told me my elgibility was in March of next year. He was so nice I really wasn't upset I had to wait a year to get iPhone 4. AT&T, you truly are a great company. Thank you!

My AT&T phone service has never been great -- I drop calls more than I'd like, and I have times when my outgoing calls all fail even though I show several bars. But while it's frustrating, it's no worse than the T-Mobile service I had before I got my iPhone, which was no worse than the Sprint service I had before that. (And I have plenty of family members on Verizon with similar problems.) The fact is, all U.S. carriers are pretty crappy. So by that low standard, I'm satisfied with AT&T.

Hey you have to have those dogmatic people who hate iphone to also hate AT&T makes sense.

AT&T does have its issues, but some of their new contract rules don't exactly make me feel warm inside.

I guess most people are generally pleased with lackluster service. Heck McDonalds sells the most hamburgers and nobody will call that "quality food". Fact is most people are lazy and go with the flow even if they should demand better.

I've had no problems with my AT&T service, and therefore I am a happy customer. But what do you classify as lackluster service ?

Before switching to AT&T, I was with Verizon, and I thought their service was bad. No reception in my office in Palo Alto, California. I was nickled and dimed to death just to activate the built in features of my phone. And my phone bill was almost twice as much. Plus having to put up with vcast was just the worst.

I just spent 12 days in Manhattan. The only times I had signal issues was was in the Empire State Building and on a subway. I had no calls dropped and I was on the phone constantly. Data speed was great. I understand that 12 days was a short sample. I would have thought that I would have had some issues.

I know some do, but I haven't had any AT&T issues

I have had no reason to complain about my AT&T service. Although I don't talk on the phone as much as some people, I always seem to have a useable signal and haven't had any reason to "jump ship" like some. Now, if I lived in SF, that would be a different story.

I think this proves that just like with the Antennagate issue....a minority that screams the loudest can seem larger than it actually is.

Happy user here

If the iPhone becomes available on another carrier, I still won't switch from AT&T. I've never been happier. In the past I had t-mobile and sprint, and both were slightly worse. Not a lot. Generally speaking, I've been happy with my wireless providers.
