This survey just raises questions about the veracity of the data. Go to consumer reports to get unbiased info.

Or just go to the news source that gives you data that agrees with your feelings.

Maybe someday we'll have an unbiased news source that can be a source of actual _data_ so people can make up their own mind...

...nah, I was just kidding.

Most of the people I know who bash AT&T are either (a) people who had a bad experience with AT&T several years ago (3 or more years ago) or (b) people who have never used AT&T but believe everything they've read/heard. I'm very satisfied with AT&T (both for wireless service and U-verse), especially as far as customer service goes (which is usually what I hear the most complaints about).

I'll bet a significant percentage of those survey participants were non-tech-savvy women, who bought an iPhone primarily because they consider it a fashion accessory.

No, you've really got it backwards.

Look, we who visit MR all the time and follow the tech press don't have a realistic perspective on these things. We're always trying to do a deep analysis, focusing on abstract or indirect criteria to get a sophisticated understanding of what's what. But the big picture can get highly distorted when you focus too much on the details.

Let's face it. The general user base is in a much better position to assess AT&T's network from a holistic point of view than a tech expert could ever be. Collectively they are running a continuous, large scale user acceptance test.

In this case AT&T's general customers aren't ignorant -- you are.

Everyone took the survey on their iPhone. The ones who couldn't get signal were not able to complete the survey.

Not to sound unsympathetic, but it cracks me up when people in New York or SF or LA complain about their cell network. Well, boo hoo. You chose to live in a big, congested city. That's your choice. That's why I'm happy with my mid-sized city and my 10-minute commute to work and the non-stressed cell phone networks and my city not requiring 3 years' worth of red tape to get through to build new towers. It's like complaining about traffic. What exactly do you expect? It comes with the territory.

That is the gayest picture I've ever seen! LOL

Uh-huh. Sure it is. ;)

Cingular/AT&T has been the best cell phone carrier I have ever used.

Before coming to Cingular, I had used Verizon right before them and they sucked on all levels, and before them who I had Sprint who not only sucked on all levels but was worse than Verizon on all levels. Being performance, support and every aspect of service.

I have renewed multiple times with AT&T and have used them happily before the iPhone came out and continue to be happy. The two years before switching to Cingular, I had Verizon and it was an absolute nightmare. Their service sucked where I lived and their support and service was horrible.

That is why I chuckle when people make definite statements about one cell phone provider over another. It all just depends, and anyone who tries to claim one is overall better than another is just full of crap and does not know what they are talking about.

That being said AT&T does have the best smart phones, so they are clearly the best smart phone provider service.

Lol, sign up just to post that?

No. lol Defensive much, though? ;) But I guess it does make sense that Verizon doesn't have the iPhone but the Droid and Droid is outselling the iPhone, so the statistics just add up right. :)

You can't fault me when even STEVE admits it. ;) lmao Now watch me get banned for pointing out what even Apple's CEO admits. Talk about tunnelvision, rose-coloured glasses and burying your head in the sand here! That's okay. I'll hold fanboys accountable. My pleasure.

I don't know anyone who's happy with AT&T - I know multiple people who are dumping the iOS platform and switching to Droid - just to get acceptable carrier performance.

Those same people have said - the moment they go somewhere other than LA - it's fine. But in LA - it's just unacceptable.

I know from first hand experience via my iPad 3G - that there is NO - ZERO 3G signal in or around my house in NE Pasadena. So an iPhone 4 isn't even an option for me.

Quit hanging around Verizon employees and get out more. :)

I am no longer an AT&T customer, but. . .

The reason I cancelled my AT&T service was because the iPhone 4 was unusable as a phone for me because of the problems with the phone's proximity sensor. My wife has my old iPhone 3G and loves it, so we will have one person in our house still using AT&T.

I knew my iPhone 4 had to go back after I put my boss on speakerphone with my cheek six times in a 45 minute phone call. Not an acceptable way to conduct business, for sure. I went to Verizon and got the Droid X and now have a phone that I am able to conduct business on with no problems whatsoever. Verizon's fantastic network that covers nearly every place within a 500 mile radius of my house with 3G coverage is just icing on the cake for me.

I came to AT&T solely for the iPhone. If I can't depend on the latest and greatest iPhone as a phone, I have no reason to stay with AT&T. Where AT&T has 3G, it's fast; but the key word is where. If I venture 15 minutes from my house in all but one direction, I'll be out of 3G coverage until I get to the next major metro area (minimum 70 miles away.) Verizon covers nearly the entire state of Georgia (where I live) with 3G. That's 375 miles north to south and 200 miles east to west. Maybe Verizon's 3G service is not quite as fast as AT&T's 3G service, but it's a heck of a lot faster and more reliable than AT&T's Edge network.

Apple proved no such thing. There are many phones that do not suffer from the same level of signal loss.

Nice try though. Anyone who actually defends Apple like this thinks of their iPhone as a more of a status symbol and less of an actual communications device.

List the phones that don't have their signal reduced or influenced by the positioning of the person holding the phone.

We were visiting with my parents last week and trying to get them to get an iPhone 4 so we could FaceTime with the grandkids. AT&T is so bad that my Mom, who is 65 years old and a generally nice and docile person said to me recently - "I will not get an iPhone". Why Mom? "Is it on AT&T?" Yes, Mom it is. "Hell no" But Mom? "No way. Never again. I will not go back to AT&T. They were horrible. I'm sorry. NO WAY."

Seriously? AT&T sucks.

Sounds more like she just doesn't want to see her grand kids?

Tell me about it, I'm in Cisco Texas, 50 miles east of Abilene, 120 west of Fort Worth and have 5 bars of 3G! Oh, wait...you meant I shouldn't have it. Nevermind. I guess i'll turn 3G off so I can be in EDGE like I guess I'm supposed to be.

Yeah and I live in a city. I guess he is wrong and wrong.

I also don't know that people understand the concept of cities. Texas has 6 of the top 25 largest cities in the country. The next closest state is California at 4. Yet all the Texas cities are over fairly large areas compared to other cities.

ITT people think others should base their location on cell service.

U mad I live in Marin, CA, across the Golden gate Bridge from SF and its still crappy? Then I work IN SF and resend texts all day because they dont go through 40%-60% of the time. Same deal at home on the top of the highest hill in the area.

I live in Palms and work in Venice and I get stellar performance as long as I'm not in my concrete block of a workplace!

I'm sure you meant phoniest. ;)

It's like, the equivalent of branded stock footage (yes, I know that's almost an oxymoron).

What part of LA? I had no problem with my Canadian iPhone on AT&T in West Hollywood, Beverly Hills or the Universal lot.

I think this proves that just like with the Antennagate issue....a minority that screams the loudest can seem larger than it actually is.

They should scream about more important things like whenever you download an app from the app store it download it in the background and not kick you out of the app store.

The antennagate issue is really a non issue even if you can reproduce the problem.

Fine by me

Compared to Verizon, love-em. Verizon seemed to excel at ways to nickel and dime me when I had them. ATT gave me a ton of extra minutes in addition to Apple's rebate when the first iPhone dropped from 600 - effectively beating the price drop in combined goodies.

Might even go off unlimited since my data use is hideously low, and save more than the cost of the phone for the life of the contract (not counting my Gazelle rebate for my last one's trade-in which already paid for the new iphone).

Works for me.

Now if they or Apple would enable Wifi tethering for my iPad - I'd be all set.

Anyone who actually thinks the iPhone could be a status symbol must be under the age of 15.
