i called 10 tjmx and they all said they got max 5 (few said non)

so i am guessing it was just a limited stock ...

These are probably black friday deals to get people into the store. Probably have a couple of hundred at a discounted price.

the stores I checked with were selling out of iPad pretty quickly.

I summed up all that I know at my site.

A lot of details remain unknown, but some interesting theories.

anyone able to pick iPad up for $399?

Yes, I did. I don't get what all the conspiracy theories are about.

Would be interesting if they are. The one I called said they weren't (Monroe NC). I suspect they are buying them at best buy target etc and reselling as loss leader. In most cases the serial number must match the store sold to in the reciept. If the number goes to a different store than Marshall's. The nanufacturer doesn't have to warranty it. That goes for lamps and jigsaws as well as ipads. I can live without a warranty on a lamp but not sure I want to on an iPad.

Just checked my serial number at Apple's website. I'm warrantied for a full year.

I was able to pick up three of them, each for $399 at a Marshalls in Florida. I checked their serial numbers and it shows that they're not registered. (which means they're new, it takes a day or two to have the iPad show up as registered after having bought one)

wow...so no sales restriction? that is interesting. do you know how many they had? did any manager/sales clerk say anything about them?

Selling at a loss, yes. This is to get people whom may not shop at TJMaxx into their store. It is not "dirty" and they aren't selling "refurbs". What is wrong with you people?

However, you are wrong about your serial number assumption. There are resale laws in place to prevent what you stated.

Checked the one by the house, none here (never had any), but they said they've been getting calls about it all day.

I know there aren't that many Macrumors people around here!

question for you...did you read about the $399 iPad and then go to the store or were just at the store and then just saw them? i'm trying to see who bought all of these (i.e. people at the store early on in the day...or those who read about it on here or engadget and then rushed out to the store)

LOL! Sorry, but Apple is not going to wait till April/May for the next gen iPad. FaceTime is a big part of iOS 4 and Apple is not going to leave the iPad without it for another 6 months.

You mean like the 3 month wait for the iPod Touch after the iPhone 4?

Yes, they will wait. No new iPads before 2011.

So are they new or refurbs. I don't remember ever seeing refurbs there before -- assuming new. Maybe they bought them off the back of a truck in NJ. Ha.

They sell more than clothing. Predominantly clothing, but they have a few gadgets and housewares. Why are they selling the iPad on the cheap? To get people into the store.

thats a good point!

yeah but I think its more complicated. If walmart could sell iPad for $450-460, I think they would, to draw people from Target. I assume Apple has restrictions in place for what price you can sell iPads to avoid price wars between Target, Walmart, Best Buy, etc, which in the end would make it even harder for Apple to charge $499 at its own stores or for future models.

That is why so many people are confused with this T.J. Maxx ordeal.

Got home from work and read about it here and on Engadget. Called the TJ Maxx nearest me and they said they just sold out. Called one in another part of town and they said they had 5 left. Then I got on the line with my brother and told him to get out there (he lives nearby). Met up with him at the store. They only had 3 when he got there. He was there when the final unit was sold shortly after we got done.

can you price match this at best buy???:D

Nope, its unadvertised, can't price match anywhere. Sucks too considering it is east of Colorado ONLY. Called 15 TJ Maxx's in and around SoCal, all said east of Colorado ONLY. I don't think that is right for a company to do. Marshall's said the same exact thing. Too bad, was hoping Target or Walmart would price match via the pictures and all things online...

I was hoping to get one tonight! That was killed.. :(

and are you and your brother planning on keeping them or turning them around on ebay for a $50 profit or so? were you planning on buying iPad anyways?

My god what's next!

marketing to the masses and not even in a computer store, really a new low for Apple and the beginning of the end for the iPad as we know it.

Apple has either lost their minds or they are just greedy little pigs looking to capitalize on any market they can get into.

I actually never thought I would see this day while Jobs was alive!

Oh well, what's next MacBook air sold in your local deli?
