I think Apple is just clearing up their stocks, so that they can launch an updated iPad for the holidays!!!

I'm holding back for FaceTime (& perhaps the Retina Display w/ a wee bit more storage capacity).

Not Just an East Coast Thing

I wish I would have seen this earlier.

I just called the T.J. Maxx here in Madison, WI and they had them this morning and they were supposedly all sold within an hour. The woman who I spoke with said that it was just a one-day thing and that they wouldn't be getting any more. :(

All stores in MA are sold out :(:(:( Damn, my parents and I were so excited
Yes. I confirmed that in MA they had 10 iPads per store at T.J. Maxx, for $399. Seekonk sold out first, followed by Easton, and lastly, Stoughton sold out about 10 minutes before I arrived (about 6:30pm). (Ignore the howling in the distance, that's just me). I stupidly forgot where I parked leaving work today and literally ate up my time walking around jogging my memory.

Luckily, thanks to MR, the tip that Marshall's has them has panned out. A few calls, and I found one that says they plan to have them in stock. Funny, though... I can't remember which one it was. I'll probably remember after I leave there tomorrow. I must be getting old. :D

Care to help a fellow dude in MA out?

Since Walmart will beat anyones price, I guess some people will be getting them for $398.

399 us$ (or 349 euro) would be a much better price for the ipad. apple is going to make much money with this device anyway! and i don't care if shareholder get much much more or just much more... it's time that apple starts to think of the customer, NOT the share holders!!!

Some people are clueless that iPad inspired tablets have 1/2 the screen, are crappy and are selling for $500 or more.

+1

Think about it...TJ Maxx & Marshalls...def refurb or worse !

I bought one tonight from TJ Maxx. It's definitely not an open-box, and it sure looks brand new to me. All the packaging is identical. Is there a way to identify a refurb? To me there's nothing about this that seems as such (and I tend to pay attention to details :)).

Hmm...seems kinda sketchy. Since when does Apple allow such a big discount? Worth investigating, but I'll bet it's either a mistake or else they have like three iPads they will sell at this price and that's that.

This is one of three things in my opinion:

1) Best case, Apple has been doing an very low profile Black Friday promo at different, non-typical retailers.

2) Regular case, you will get a voucher from this retailer to go to the local Apple store in the mall to pick up the iPad. A classic cross traffic, loss lead promotion.

3) Worst case, somehow counterfeit iPads made it stateside.

If they are authorized to sell down it gives me the impression that Apple getting the iPad 2.0 ready for Christmas or just after.

Just after, like by April/May 2011? I agree

This is Apple's 2010 Holiday line-up.

The last thing we can expect this year is iOS 4.2.1 for our iDevices and the new Apple TV.

Agreed. Apple sticks to a yearly product cycle for their iDevices. Based on how well iPad is selling, they have no reason to release a newer model anytime soon.

I think that this is simply a retail chain deciding to take a loss on a super-popular item in order to draw customers who normally wouldn't go to a TJ Maxx/Marshall's into their store.

I haven't read through the entire thread, but am I the only one who thinks TJ Maxx selling the iPad sounds kinda dirty?

In other news, for those of you saying Apple will announce iPad2 in feb, but sell in April, I say no way. Why would Apple announce a 2nd generation product 2 full months before going on sale? They never do this (only for totally new products). When the announce the iPad2, it'll be available immediately or at most 1 week.

Is marshall's TJ Maxx authorized dealers

Would be interesting if they are. The one I called said they weren't (Monroe NC). I suspect they are buying them at best buy target etc and reselling as loss leader. In most cases the serial number must match the store sold to in the reciept. If the number goes to a different store than Marshall's. The nanufacturer doesn't have to warranty it. That goes for lamps and jigsaws as well as ipads. I can live without a warranty on a lamp but not sure I want to on an iPad.

the stores I checked with were selling out of iPad pretty quickly.

I summed up all that I know at my site.

A lot of details remain unknown, but some interesting theories.

anyone able to pick iPad up for $399?

LOL! Sorry, but Apple is not going to wait till April/May for the next gen iPad. FaceTime is a big part of iOS 4 and Apple is not going to leave the iPad without it for another 6 months.

I was able to pick up three of them, each for $399 at a Marshalls in Florida. I checked their serial numbers and it shows that they're not registered. (which means they're new, it takes a day or two to have the iPad show up as registered after having bought one)
