Just thought that maybe they would do that if you went into the store. I just purchased a TV from there for $699 on a Tuesday and noticed online they were selling the same TV at a discount $499 on Sunday and was "1 day only clearance sale" and after showing customer service the ad I had saved the webpage on my phone, I got $212 back :D.

They do honor price matches, but only from a direct competitor like Walmart, Target, Amazon, Fry's Electronic etc...

Several years ago I used to work at Home Depot as a cashier, and we would offer a price match if you brought in an Ad from Lowe's, Orchards Supplies, Ace Hardwars, but not from a Mom-and-Pop shop (because we didn't directly compete, even though we sold the same items).

funny thing is ipad only cost 250 to make, so apple still making a **** load of money, and so is tj maxx/marshalls

R&D, Marketing and Distribution is not free, so it may cost $250 to make, but the value of the iPad is not $250.

BTW InfinitiG, where the hell is my White iPhone 4?, you said Mid-October:D

Uh oh......

Looks like TJ Maxx was the first to let the news slip about the new price drop on the iPad that Apple is about to announce........hhmm.

Steve Jobs won't be happy about this.

A little bit off topic but Mac Connection has the Mac Mini for $599 ($100 off). I have not really seen internet and other retailers discounting Apple products this much before. May be the time has come for more competitive pricing of Apple products among retailers. A few weeks ago, Apple lowered the price of the Mac Mini in certain European countries. At that time it was probably currency related. But, since Apple increased the price of the new Mini compared to the old Mini, may be they are going to bring it down. And may be they are going to bring the iPad price down to increase the volume dramatically. Also, this might be the reason Apple guided for lower gross margins in the future (into next year).

*Compare at $499

When this phrase is used in marketing 95% there is a tangible difference between the product being offered and the one it's being compared to.

Since we know the $499 is the genuine full markup version of the iPad, the model being offered i suspect is most likely a refurbished model.

There's no way Apple is authorizing a 20% price reduction on a flagship product.

This isn't surprising, Marshalls (part of TJMaxx) always gets random electronics that come in here and there. I bought a sony blu-ray player for $70 there (this was years ago when HD-DVD was still around) and also an official Sony PS3 dual shock controller for $17 earlier this year. This was less than half of what real electronic stores were selling them for. It's also a good place to buy golf balls. They cost 3 to 4 times as much even using froogle.

love/hate

Love the price and location, hate the fact that they released this news early, cause Steve is 1st going to rip TJMaxx a new hole & 2nd he'll never deal with them again. Sweet & Sour Steve.

399 us$ (or 349 euro) would be a much better price for the ipad. apple is going to make much money with this device anyway! and i don't care if shareholder get much much more or just much more... it's time that apple starts to think of the customer, NOT the share holders!!!

This is from BestBuy's site

What if the competitor does not have the item in stock or has limited quantities of the product?
Sometimes a retailer will advertise a very low price for a product but have only limited quantities in stock. If the item is out of stock or the competitor has limited quantities of an item, it is not eligible for price matching. Likewise, if Best Buy has a product that is advertised as being limited in quantity it will not be eligible for price matching.

What are you talking about?

Where are people getting that Apple/SJ is mad at TJ Maxx?

This isn't a leak about a potential sale..... they were actually selling them today at that price.....

I think you need to take Marketing 101.

Thanks TJ Maxx

Just picked up the last one at the TJ Maxx in Norwich, CT. Wonder if Apple is going to knock down the price for the holiday season. Seems like a bad idea though since they're going to sell a ton anyway.

He will be happy but not happy. He's happy he's able to take away more market share from potential competitors (aka samsung, blackberry) by getting customers sitting on the fence to buy iPad (even non-buyers in this round is a plus for Apple as it keeps them waiting and not buy from competitors), taking them away from competitors, WHILE not dragging Apple brand into a price war.

He's NOT happy that the customers sitting on the fence are NOT buying iPad at the FULL price.

Call me crazy but
1) new iPhoto 11 not supporting videos (mp4) from Samsung cameras (used to work with iPhoto 09)
2) Samsung Galaxy Tab rolling out to market

tells me Apple is being proactive in protecting their market share, if you know what I mean.

Nah, it's all just a coincidence...

Prediction! Apple is closing out Wi-Fi iPads without 3G

They all should be W-Fi + 3G anyway!

Not a snowballs chance in Hell.

And you're right............. that would be a bad idea and Apple doesn't need to firesale hot products. Now retailers, that's TOTALLY different story. TJ has generated a ton of free press over this loss leader. They have made back their loss (per unit sale) many times over.
