I don't know about buying an iPad at TJM or Marshall's... Every time I go to one of those stores all the merchandise is beat to hell. Maybe that is why they are so cheap.

Broadline Distribution is THE REASON

This is what happens when you open up your sales through broad-line distributors like Tech Data and Ingram Micro.

As long as you have a resale certificate (and sometimes not event that), any IT department can buy these in bulk.

Say an IT department is making a large purchase for Data infrastructure. Ingram & Tech Data will actually take a "some" loss on the iPad hardware as long as it pulls in a $750,000 Cisco sale.

Don't quote or point out the math in my example but this a very real practice in distribution.

This story has gone viral.

The obvious answer is that TJ is getting a VERY good return on this promotional offer.

The other OBVIOUS answer is that this promotion has NOTHING to do with ipad_2 release.

cheers

Just went to Marshall's too, and they don't have them. The guy looked at me like I was crazy when I asked... he asked another employee who said they only have iPad cases.

10 16GB iPads in Niles, IL sold out in 1 day

What the title says. Employee/Manager didn't know if they would be getting more in stock, but they sold out in less than a day.

I made a rare visit to TJM just 4 hours ago and I saw one right near the entrance (rt 1 in Alexandria, VA - by the Target).

I breezed by figuring it was too good to be true. Box looked a little fishy, like a repackage.

I'm not in the market, but in hindsight I probably should have jumped on it for the price - good deal even for a refurb.

For what it's worth, I just spoke to the manager of my local TJ Maxx and was told that while they have gotten about 50 calls today, they have absolutely no indication from their corporate offices that any such sale is happening now, or is going to happen. "Its just a wild rumor" he said.

I say this is a sort of like a shot across the bow of a certain competitor that started selling a certain tablet that everyone says is a legit competitor to ipad (although most agree it's not going to beat iPad or even approach it)...

Best Buy sell electronics, TJ Maxx sells clothing, they are not competitors, so BB will not honor the price match.

N/M, the iPad was in "limited quantities" so that disqualifies it anyways.

Just thought that maybe they would do that if you went into the store. I just purchased a TV from there for $699 on a Tuesday and noticed online they were selling the same TV at a discount $499 on Sunday and was "1 day only clearance sale" and after showing customer service the ad I had saved the webpage on my phone, I got $212 back :D.

Are you talking about those $100 Android tablets? iPad has a long way to go there. And I am pretty sure that if Apple is going to compete on price with the likes of Audiovox, Creative etc. Apple will be the first one to go bankrupt.

Right now Apple has enough cash in the bank to build about 150 million iPads and give them away for free.

If you are talking about Samsung... Steve Jobs says "nobody is going to buy a tablet with 7" screen". Samsung says "we will be selling ten millions in the first year". Clearly at least one of them is wrong, possibly both. However, should Samsung sell significant numbers then they will be stopped dead in their tracks when the 7" iPad ships for $100 less.

This got me thinking... when the iPad 2 comes out, they should keep on the 16GB WiFi iPad (the current gen) as an entry-level model at $399. Sort of like they do with the 3GS. This would KILL the coming wave of Android tablets dead. There's obviously a big psychological barrier between 499 and 399.

All gone over here. 2/3 Stores I called had them and sold out by the afternoon. Hoping they'll get more in stock. I'm guessing Apple's not gonna like this.

Um, I don't remember samsung ever saying 'we will be selling 10 millions...' But whatever. I'm sure Samsung won't be too disappointed even if apple comes out with 7" iPads as they will be building the cpu for the 7" iPad anyways... But competition is good.

But I just don't get how this happened. I really think apple is using a proxy to warn competitors that they will cut the price if they have to. Kinda preemptive strike. Apple just doesn't want Apple's brand associated with price war me thinks.
