Ok thanks. I am going to try ordering a couple of sims from them and see how it goes. Makes me a little nervous that they are asking for my CC# for a free order but I guess I will find out in a few days!

I don't think anyone was feeling "entitled" to anything or expecting anything for free until T-Mobile kept pushing press releases and tweets like this:

via @TMobile
"We have unleashed TABLETS! No strings attached, no commitments, no 2yr service contracts, 200MB FREE 4G data – current customer or not!"

Sigh...well at least I know there is hope since people like you are still trying to help ungrateful entitled people to understand. But honestly I think we're just talking to walls here. I give up - preparing for the end of civilization now lol.

All jokes aside, I wonder every day how some people get through life without being able to understand simple concepts like this. Or even the ones blindly sticking by AT&T's (or god forbid Sprint's) side as they continue to rob them and keeps bashing on Tmobile when they're actually trying to make a difference in the wireless industry.

Thats not a rude assessment of people at all :/. I do not feel entitled for free things, they offered it for free to get non customers interested which they did. I dont need the iPad so I didnt pay for their data plan. I would never have even thought of buying from TMobile if they hadnt made this offer seem so good which made some sense because it would have gotten people like myself on their network and randomly buying extra data which I would have. Get over yourself.

So I'm ordering a sim online right now, they are free.

I'm an existing t-mobile customer - and was going to do this - just in case I needed to get a different carrier's cellular model when I get a retina mini later this month.

For the life of me - I can't add one to my cart when I'm signed in - If I'm signed in and search for the accessory, it ignores my account information when I try to add the sim to my cart.

I give up. T-Mobile could be earning a lot more good will with this offer - yet they seem to be trying hard to screw it up.

Tmobile does not have contracts. What are you referring to? And what exactly are they notorious for?

Yes they do.

Try buying a phone on their payment plan (which is a contract) and deciding you don't want it 2 months in. You'll have to pay more than their little 200 bucks of an ETF to leave!

It's their way of raising ETF's without actually doing it

Where did you find that at?

Is the free Starter Data allocation throttled like other Mobile Internet plans and passes?
No, the 200 MB Starter Data is capped. This means that once you have used it up, you have three options:
1.Upgrade to a Simple Choice Mobile Internet Plan that gives you more data each month. See our Simple Choice Mobile Internet plans page.
2.Buy an On Demand data pass.
3.Wait until you receive your next allocation of free data.

US-sold iPads are factory unlocked.

Thanks, I was actually thinking of buying the iPad mini retina on T-Mobile before I found out about the extra $10 a month. I will probably end up getting it on AT&T now, if they give the $100 discount up front.

I was thinking of "financing it" through T-Mobile's plan and using AT&T data, but I guess it will be all AT&T for me.

I was having trouble with the website earlier as well and I would click add to cart but my cart would still be empty. I finally came across this page and it worked:

I ordered a micro and nano sim. The only thing is that even though they are free, you have to enter in a real credit card number and they do authorize it for $1

Isn't the key word here "customers" in the press release? They said customers could expect 0% financing and free 200MB data for life. If you don't have a plan with them, you are not a customer.

TMobile isn't a bank. They are not just going to finance anyone that walks in off the street and on top of that, give them free data to boot.

I don't see how people can't understand this.

Are you not a customer the moment you buy the iPad?

I'm not angry at all. Yes, they promoted it as free, but one has to stop and think, what's the catch? Why aren't other carriers doing this? And saying they're greedy is not enough of an answer. Every other carrier charges some kind of monthly fee for the ipad if you're financing it (whether they are giving free data or not). The point was everyone heard the words free data and didn't want to hear anything else even though it was common business sense that something else is going on there that is NOT completely advertised.
How is TMO making money if they are just giving away data to anyone with an iPad (some not bought from them by the way), or people financing the ipad knowing they can pay it off whenever?

I think you're wrong - in that IF you have a cellular device that you own (and paid for), you can have your device on t-mobile's network and get 200 MB of internet service just by giving them the opportunity to sell you additional data if you need it. That's the advantage for t-mobile and pretty fair IMO.

This whole fiasco of a thread seems to mostly revolve around people wanting free financing and free internet - which may have been misleading on t-mobile's part, but like another post noted - just buy it outright.

No matter - we'll have confirming experiences from iPad Air customers shortly.

Though it's missing the fact that you need to be ON a contract to get that particular deal. They weren't exactly lying. They don't have "2 year contracts" and it's free for anyone that already has phone service with them or a fully paid tablet. It's (purposeful?) bad wording at best... not bait and switch. It's like "politician speak".

I didn't read the whole thread but here was my experience today. I bought an att ipad from best buy. Went to tmobile and asked for a SIM card, they charged me $10 for a sim and I created an account with them. BUT I did not give them my credit card info. I now have 200mb free and can upgrade my plan when I need (they will get my cc then).

i'm currently Tmobile voice customer. Just bought an ipad air over the phone. They only charge me 26.25/month. so pretty much i will get 200mb for free and still able to get 0$ down for 24 months of 26.25

If you take the AT&T's 100$ discount offer, you are locked to 2-year contract for their data plan.

I just got the free 200 MB plan.
I "purchased" a nano sim off of the tmobile website a couple months ago. The sim price was free with free shipping, so purchased isn't really the right word ;)

I powered off my ipad 3, then I took the ATT sim out and replaced it with the tmobile sim. I then booted the ipad and turned on cellular data. The ipad auto recognized my tmobile sim. I didn't know what to do next so I opened up safari. I was immediately taken to a tmobile registration page where I was asked for my name, date of birth, zip code, email address, and a password and pin for the account. I put in all the info and submitted the form.

Poof, a couple seconds later I got a confirmation screen with my mobile number (don't know what that is about) and a confirmation that my sim is enrolled in the free 200mb plan.

I'm posting this note on tmobile cellular. In my town, unfortunately, we don't have LTE, so the status bar reads 3G. But hey, it's free!

So, you don't need a 10$ plan, if you own your device. Just put in a sim and go! cool!

Awesome, just as advertised. Props to tmobile!

Yeah I understand that, it actually looks like 20 months though, but I wouldn't mind. I wish their low plan was less and $15 would give you 500mb or 1gb. Not sure exactly what I am going to do yet, but I am pretty sure I will be getting the mini in a few weeks.

Intentional "bad wording" in a press release and repeated advertisements thereafter is considered "bait and switch".

Basically, they announced one thing, and they aren't offering it.

Granted, people shouldn't be "pissed". But it's disappointing for sure.

And their failure to mention the $10 extra monthly fee does fall under "lying by omission".

No. You're an Apple customer. You're a T-Mobile customer when you open an account with them.

Please read T-Mobile's own words again: you do not need to be their customer. They specifically wrote "even non-customers".

----

I think this situation is simply a case of good marketing plan getting backtracked by a corporate decision at the last minute.

Perhaps T-Mobile was indeed planning to offer the FREE finance and monthly data plans as a way to attract more potential customers. However, last minute decisions from the top assessed that they needed to make some amount of profits, hence the $10 fee was added in the end. Despite the press release.

Essentially, they probably assessed that financing $630 or so for so many people would cause a big backlash for their revenues, and they didn't want to take it up anymore.

That's only for the whole financing deal, of course. The 200MB data plan is still FREE. They seem to still want to throw a wrench in AT&T's and Verizon's plans. I bet people would still appreciate at least that.

What I wonder is has anyone said anything to TMO about their misleading ad and what their response is. I've been googling all morning and I guess it's not that big of a stink yet...

Maybe because it's NOT misleading? I just activated an account with T-mobile an hour ago, and I got my 200MB data free. No credit card, no credit check, no downpayment, etc...

Only downside is my T-mobile coverage is pretty weak, but free is free. BTW, I didn't even buy my ipad through T-mobile.

.

Trust me I'm disappointed. I was going to get one through them, now I have to go to Best Buy this evening to pick up an At&t model and putting in my 99 cent TMobile SIM.

The $10 charge is only for people who aren't on contract already AND want to do their 24 month no interest financing.

There was never the sentence "$0 DOWN 24 MONTH FINANCING AND FREE DATA FOR EVERYONE AND THEIR MOTHER." (sarcastically written before some decides the unnecessary need to call me out on the verbage)

You own an iPad (no matter where you got it) that will work with TMobile's network, you get your free data. And they totally hold true to that.

As for financing... Best Buy does 18 months. No big deal to me.
