You're going to pay for it every year, effectively it's renting software (even) if you want bug fixes - since they've pulled the old version from the App Store already.
That's not surprising, there aren't any textures anymore.
To my knowledge, this is the first paid upgrade since Tweetbot was released. So, no, not every year.
And if it is $3 every year, so what? I use it every day. It's more than worth that price.
The alternative is that Tweetbot development is no longer financially viable for the developer so it has to be abandoned. That would be far worse.

Looks like this upgrade gets iOS 7's design language! Can't wait for the iPad version!

Does tweebot 3 finally shows who's favorited/retweeted your tweet or who followed you recently?
I'd really like to see that in this. That's probably a HIGH selling point for myself.

As has been pointed out many times: Text resize is now tied to the system dynamic font setting. Change it in Settings.

Wait, so they removed Tweetbot 2.0 from the app store, but Tweetbot 3.0 requires iOS 7 and later? That makes no sense.

I think the only way to toggle the readability view is in the Settings. There doesn't seem to be a way to toggle it for individual links, though, which makes me sad, because I prefer article view for some links but readability for others. Hopefully, they'll return that feature in a future update.
Did not notice that and not happy about it either.
Some articles don't show up in readability and need that toggle to appear.

Yuck. What is with the ROUND avatars? People spend an amazing amount of effort to design their icons to read correctly in a SQUARE format and now the Tweetbot 3 truncates those images, just to look different? At least let me toggle that off.

The official @Tweetbot account was tweeting and telling people tonight to "enable night mode" in response to complaints about all the white. I don't know why they would say that and it's not there, but THERE WILL BE A DARK "THEME"
Also, there will be more gestures and motions and shortcuts added as time goes on

They are most likely going to allow the option to change avatar shape from circle back to square. However, when you view the Twitcon, it shows the full picture They've hinted at the possibility on @Tweetbot
I cannot confirm selecting font size within the app, but they have been responding to people on Twitter (and still are) and accepting/notating feature requests!
Send all feedback & feature requests to @Tweetbot!
Also, when you're viewing a profile, pull DOWN to unblur the profile header

These I definitely miss!
The round avatars look nice, too me, but I much prefer squares for the reason you stated.
The resizable type is a system-level fuction, access it there.

Well, although the list of major new features (other than massive UI refinements) is not huge, there are few additional new features. Here are my top two:
1. Background download. Now I can read tweets in long elevator ride all the way from underground parking garage.
2. Background web page loading. While the page is loading, I can switch to mentions, DM, or list to view other things and come back to read the page.
Mark Jardine(Tweetbot developer) confirmed on his Twitter tonight that adjustable font size is coming, as well as night mode

Yeah, that is how software upgrades have worked for the last 20 years. And since they are offering it at a discount initially, you effectively are getting an upgrade price currently.
