I always assumed the "curved glass" rumors simply meant that the little plastic lip that protrudes around the screen would be gone, replaced by a rounded-off edge to the glass itself. (Nothing to do with a curved display, then.)

It would be nice to redesign the homescreen but if it works for the mini and 5's then why change it for something in the middle? Hopefully they think different :apple:

Perhaps borderless displays is the next step, I'd like it. But the curved back seems veeeery uncomfortable and inappropriate...

Agreed about the tapered back. It must be fun to do mockups. But not much thought about actual use must have been considered. Simply laying a tapered back phone on a flat surface would be untenable. It would wobble and with less surface area it would slip and fall off of even mildly tilted surfaces.

I think the edge-to-edge screen is pretty awesome but my opinion on a curved backplate is....

all this talk about curved glass and they show a curved back with flat glass...

Reminds me of the concept images for the iphone 5 before it came out (curved + edge to edge). Turned out to be nothing like it :)

I don't think "bigger screen = more icons per home screen" really qualifies as "new home screen possibilities", but rather an obvious and uncreative thing that one can do with extra screen space.

While the renderings don't really stay in line with Apple's design, the borderless screen is certainly something they will one day adopt. But the iPhone 6 is probably not going to have it yet, this is further down the road, I'd say in more than 2-3 years.

If Apple opts for a larger screen size, I really hope they find something new to do with the homescreen. The rows of icons on these mockups look awful. I'm not a big fan of widgets but I like the idea of expandable icons like WP's Live Tiles or the concepts we saw before iOS 7 was announced. Just something to actually use the space.

Exactly. I'm not a big widget fan either, but these mock ups make it pretty clear that adding more rows and columns of icons is kind of just wasting the extra space. I hope Apple can come up with a clever solution.

no headphone jack?
and amera in the middle?

crazy talk.

plus i don't care for the edge-to-edge look (at least that edge-to-edge look) and not sure about the tapered back. again, my thoughts, I don't speak for everyone.

I just don't think borderless screens are the way forward, at least not in the near term. Doing so would create an inordinate amount of issues related to spurious input (yes, I'm aware of the tweaks made around the intro of the iPad Mini, but still) and structural integrity of the device.

Are there any devices on the market that don't have a bezel?

2nd to that awful. Borderless screens are ugly.

I like the look of thin bezels, but no bezel at all just looks ugly IMO.

I think it would make sense for Apple to reserve the upper parts of the screens for widgets that you normally don't click. Just to preserve their claim of the perfect size to reach with your thumb.

While I like this idea, I don't think Apple will implement widgets in the same way Android does. I think if they were to introduce them, it would be more like the Windows Phone live tiles and update on an interval. That way they don't have to worry about the battery life being used up too much (I can vouch for this method working because I have quite a few live tiles on my Lumia 920 and I don't experience any adverse battery effects).

I always assumed the "curved glass" rumors simply meant that the little plastic lip that protrudes around the screen would be gone, replaced by a rounded-off edge to the glass itself. (Nothing to do with a curved display, then.)

That was what I assumed too. Once you've owned a device with the curved edge on the glass, you never want to go back. Your finger just rolls on and off the screen so nicely. Anything with a flat edge just feels harsh.

Hmm, I don't think I want 40 app icons on a single screen...it already takes long enough to find an app with only 24...

No curved back phones please. The last thing I need is my phone rocking back and forth every time I put it down on my desk. The original iPad had a curved back and it was really annoying.

The design is very nice, but I don't need something larger in my pocket, I want something smaller. If they're going to start fiddling with size (a la "innovation, Samsung-style"), why is larger (than current) the only size they would choose?
