Could someone please explain why anyone would want a phone that is half as high but twice as thick, that needs to be unfolded before it can be used, but still has roughly the same screen size as a normal phone? No matter how hard I try I cannot imagine any reasonable use case.
I remember when most people in this forum did not want a phone bigger than 4.5 inches because they look stupid big...

Honestly I’ve only ever seen folding Huawei or Samsung phones in the hands of affluent 50+ year old women in Shanghai, who kind of carry it around like a clutch purse.

Yeah, it would be different if the "Apple side" was Apple Store workers vs. regular customers. Makes it sound like the average Apple user is just a mindless lemming or something.

And before someone says it--yes, there are people like that with every popular company (extreme fanboys/girls), but they're in the minority.

Yeah, the mindless follower thing is how Samsung ads always cast Apple users. I could never see switching to a company whose appeal to me is telling me what an idiot I am.

It's apparently inconceivable to Samsung's marketing people that consumers might not give a rip what the latest tech is. I'm more interested in how a company can implement the latest tech in a way that's compelling and useful, not just a novelty, even if it means taking time to do it right.

Samsung this week released a new anti-Apple "On the Fence" ad that once again targets Apple's lack of foldable devices. In the spot, a man sits on a fence overlooking a retail store designed to look like an Apple Store.

"Hey, what are you doing up there?" asks an Apple-like employee. "You can't sit on the fence." "But on the Samsung side, they have folding phones and epic cameras," replies the man. His speech attracts another "Apple" customer interested in foldable devices, while the fake Apple employee tries to talk him out of leaving. "We're waiting for all that to come over here," explains the employee.

"Why? It's already over there," replies the potential Samsung customer. "Because that's what we do. We wait," says the fake Apple employee.

Samsung has a long history of poking fun at Apple in its ad spots and insulting Apple devices in order to promote its own products. Samsung's Anti-Apple ads have picked up in recent months, with Samsung focusing heavily on the fact that Apple has not yet come out with a foldable device.

Samsung in September, for example, launched a first-to-foldables campaign mocking the iPhone's lack of innovation while promoting Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip features. "What's the hold on the Fold, Apple?" Samsung asked. Samsung also encouraged people to "join the Flip side," choosing a Samsung Galaxy Z Flip device over the iPhone 14 models.

There's no word as of yet on when Apple might come out with some kind of foldable device, and Samsung has indeed been selling foldable smartphones since 2019. Early Fold devices had a long list of issues with screen quality and durability, which perhaps explains why Apple has waited to come out with a foldable device.

Newer foldables from Samsung are more durable and have fewer issues, but continue to have high price points ranging from $900 for the latest Z Flip to $1,600 for the latest Z Fold.

I don't get it, what's the "killer-app" reason to get a foldable phone? Is it like having an iPad mini in your pocket?

I am a month in to owning the Fold 4.

I will admit that there are some tradeoffs, but I can confidently say I will never go back to a traditional phone.

Having a tablet with you that folds down to pocket size, is an absolute game changer for productivity, and entertainment.

It is years ahead of anything else out there.

If you like to be on the cutting edge, there is nothing else out here as cool as folding phones.

Once you use one, you will understand.

Uh ... are you familiar with the entire Apple vs. Microsoft commercials starring Justin Long? All's fair in playful advertising.
Yeah that’s what this ad reminded me of a little bit, those funny I’m a PC / Mac ads. They (Samsung) have a LONG way to go still to make such ads effective, and it‘s still mostly absurd to me the whole folding (and still in my view too huge) phone thing, but I like that the ad is being a bit more humorous and witty than many other such ads… I mean the bar is low for that w/ Samsung, but it’s a funny concept behind the ad, props to them for effort/improvement.

Not waiting for a foldable phone...maybe some thinks it's cool and will jump over the fence but I hardly think many iPhone users would. It is cool tech but too expensive for the gimmick of...folding the screen. A laptop with flexible screen (already exists...) makes much more sense since you actually fold it when putting it a case/bag whatever.

I would never in my life buy a foldable phone as i compleatly fail to see the purpose of such a fragile device. Neither would i buy the samsung foldable nor a apple foldable if they bring such useless device to the market.

I’ve yet to actually see anyone actually owning a folding phone.
I know one person. It’s interesting, but when it’s closed it doesn’t really do much. I don’t think I get the point, if it was a smaller screen that folded into a bigger screen, that could be cool. But even then, is it really that big of a deal? Idk. 🤷‍♀️

I like this idea that everyone is painfully waiting for an iPhone that can fold in half. We’re all so so sad that our phones don’t become really thick squares in our pockets. :’(

Its great. The ad doesnt even mention apple, but everyone is up in arms about them targeting apple.

I think the only people who actually watch samsung ads are the apple folks complaining about them.

As an iPhone user I gave the Flip 4 a try, but gave it back and returned to my iPhone 12 mini.
The idea is great, form factor also great, the crease is not that noticeable. What drove me crazy, that the thing had to install 5 updates just to start using it. UI was laggy and riddled with bugs, camera was OK, nothing bad or nothing to write home about. App crashes were frequent, specially with Google Maps.

I really like the idea of the Flip phones, had high hopes both for Motorola and for Samsungs, but the experience is not there yet.

Eh, that was pretty accurate. Apple is falling behind on all fronts. Their biggest selling point is the Camera and looks like the new Pixel 7 Pro smashed that too from what Macrumors has posted.

Even as iPhone users we know what this ad says is correct though, let’s be realistic. Apple tend to do things better which is why we buy iPhones, but they wait for other manufacturers to try things first in some cases and join the party at a later date. Examples of this were bigger screen devices, wireless charging, OLED and NFC. They’ve also introduced some features that others have followed too but more recently and nothing groundbreaking for me.

Don’t take these ads personally people, it’s just a bit of marketing at the end of the day.

It's like watching two owners of different luxury cars fighting while you can't afford to buy a toy car.
