Not a good idea, in my opinion. You're buying tech that is bordering on a year and a half old with a graphics card that is bordering on two.

But I'm just one vote.

The 8800GT was released in November 2007, a little less than 14 months ago. Your point is made, but this incredible hyperbole doesn't help it.

As Tallest Skil indicated,
1. It won't cost that much more for the parts than the last release. Whew...:D
And even if some parts cost a lot more, Apple can balance this out by not bumping the other components as much.

Now just imagine FB-DIMM2. :p If it ever sees the light of day. ;)
Last I heard, it would be the RAM for Beckton, which is coming late 2009, but lately Wikipedia changed it back to FB-DIMM for some reason.

What is it you are going to use them for again?
And do you need the Mac Pro now or can you wait a few months?

Core i5 is being used for the mainstream desktop parts.
So will Gainestown be Core i8 and Becton be Core i9? :D
I'm thinking:

Core i9: If Westmere has a 4-core variant, i8 could be 4-core and i9 could be 6-core
Core i8: Westmere (Bloomfield successor, 6-core)
Core i7: Bloomfield
Core i6: Westmere (Lynnfield successor, 4-core?)
Core i5: Lynnfield
Core i4: Westmere (Havendale successor, 4-core?)
Core i3: Havendale
Core i2: Westmere (Havendale successor, 2-core?)
Core i1: ?
Core i0: ?

Maybe the mobile CPUs will use m instead of i or something.

Last I looked, I noticed it as well.

My guess would relate to economics. The small quantities sold compared to desktop memory, doesn't help either.

Core i7 seems to be the naming scheme of the desktop parts.

I think they would stick to Xeon to differentiate the server/workstation parts.

Either way, we should find out officially soon. ;)

Anyone else notice that Apple has influenced even intel to put an i infront of their chipset names. i7, hehe.

It would still be better than that stupid dropped "e".

Maybe Apple decided to use the vowels in their products A E I O U Y.

A: is already taken because its already called an apple product.

E: well emacs was used.

I: apples been using it for a while, ibook, iphone, imac, etc..

O: Maybe in the next decade??

U: Decade or two after that??

Y: Maybe they will avoid this one though.. because a Ymac???

The sidewindow should definitely be there, and all the internal cables should be white so we can fully appreciate the black light!
The fluorescent logo is actually the grill for the exhaust vent, and the fan has multi-colored LEDs, effectively giving us the old colored Apple logo!

Mr. Ive, step aside -- it's time for a case redesign! :D

No. They are Xeno processors, they would not fit into a desktops (nevermind a mobile) motherboard.

The 65W quad cores that have been released (especially the 2.83GHz one) would probably perform similar to that 2.4GHz part.

Hi. Sorry if this was covered already.

From page one: 2TB HDD: Only possible if the WD HDDs are released before the Mac Pro... will they be?

WD Caviar Green
SATA Hard Drives
2 TB, 32 MB Cache, SATA 3 Gb/s

http://www.wdc.com/en/products/products.asp?driveid=576
:)

I'll be interested to see if Apple include 1.5TB and 2TB drives due to the issues with the 1.5TB ones. I don't think most people here care one way or another as they won't be buying hard drives from Apple anyway ($450 for a 1TB upgrade currently).

FRICK YES. WE NOW KNOW THE RELEASE DATE. First post updated.

good god there expensive:eek:

What did I tell you? What did I say? First post, baby. We all knew they would shaft us just a little bit more. :p

Except that the performance gains for Nehalem (even without Snow Leopard) are totally worth it.

there are others, for example: S. would be sMac.... perhaps not the image apple is going for

Wait I thought the quads released were Core 2 not Nehalem. If so the quads would have to be 3.2Ghz to be on par with a 2.66Ghz Nehalem.

They are core 2, but I would guess a 2.83GHz core 2 with 1333MHz FSB would perform similar to a 2.4GHz Nehalem. Eitherway the Xeons aren't going to be in iMacs.

yeah although it will depend largely on what type of task is being compared
