ABC Radeon HD4670 vs. XYZ Radeon HD4670

Hi All,

Very interesting topic, thanks to Tallest Skil and to all of you who makes MAC-beginner life a bit easier ;)

... up to four Radeon 4670 (virtually confirmed!)

There are several brands Radeon HD4670 cards. Here is a list (not full) what's available from computer stores:
- ASUS Radeon HD4670
- Gigabyte Radeon HD 4670
- Hightech HD4670
- PowerColor HD4670
- MSI HD4670
- Sapphire HD4670

From what I can see the difference in how much memory on board (512/1024) and memory/engine clocks. Could you please explain to me are they compatible to go CrossFire? Let say, can I put Asus and Hightech cards together even they have different clocks and memory sizes? Any restrictions to have only identical cards?

Thanks,
Ruslan

First, congrats on getting the 1,000th post in this thread.

Second, the card will most likely be underclocked (or standard clocked) and it will have to have a 128k ROM chip. If there are any cards made with said chip now, let's just assume that Apple will use those.

And CrossFire will only work in Windows, so whatever you can do there, you will be able to do with the Gainestown Mac Pro. In Boot Camp, of course.

Oh come on I just want a new Mac Pro :(

Ditto.

Time for a prediction. Based on previous information in this thread, people have been saying the processors will be released on 3/29 and the new MPs will come 6 weeks later. My hunch is Apple will announce around NAB (I know I know they don't do trade shows lately but there is precedent), paired with the release of Final Cut Studio 3. They have done this in the past to show off new software and hardware while the industry is focused on new gear. So announcement around 4/20-23 with shipping 5/11-5/15. That's my 2 cents.

Apple don't usually announce before shipping when there is no reason too. Also I think the big spanner in the works for date guessing is Snow Leopard. Personally I don't we will see Nehalem Mac Pros without it.

Raid 0

I had a Raid 0 configuration fail in my MacPro. I used disk utility to fix it, reinstalled leopard and then used Time Machine to reinstall everything else. Pretty quick and painless.

Why all the worry about Raid 0 with Time machine? The performance is awesome.

You're joking right? They announce products all the time with shipping delays. From my Rev. A G5 (4 months!) to the latest MBP 17 inch. They often announce products that do not ship immediately.

What do other folks think? We're looking at a 6 odd week wait, after the CPU release - it isn't like Apple hasn't delayed a product for a while before? I would have thought the Mac Pro would be the Mac for showing off Snow Leopard?

Any consensus on this? That'd make it a 4 month wait then presumably, versus 1 1/2 month wait.

hmmm...

I guess if i were to guess, i would think that they would maybe demo the mac pro with the imac release. I don't remember specifically, but i don't think apple releases the pro machine with much fanfare. so, i can see a mac pro demoed at an imac event. i don't foresee a special mac pro event.

however, the jump to nehalem processors certainly could warrant a special event.

and, apple has a LONG history of demoing products as a pre-release.

Like I said, not when they don't have to (since the switch). They needed some hardware at Macworld, that is why the 17" got announced. They have nothing compelling them to release new Mac Pros other than the standard workstation cycle. The previous Mac Pros have been "in stores" at release and I think that is likely again. Only the 2006 one was announced at an event too. In the en who knows with Apple, there are plenty of possible scenarios and I'm sure they have analysed many of them.

I saw someone on Appleinsider suggest Apple would want Snow Leopard on Mac Pros from the start as it will be better suited to the hyper-threading/logical cores of Nehalem which if true would back that up a little. Personally I don't see them comming with Leopard as the dates are going to be so close unless SL gets delayed (unlikely). Any other company would probably ship with Leopard and offer SL upgrades so people have a solid proven platform to work on, but well Apple can be odd about stuff like that.

I'm sure there will also be some BTO choice that delays shipping by months, always is. I guess if SL comes in April or something then maybe they would demo it on a Mac Pro. The Mac Pro isn't a marketed item though and hasn't been shown off before being readily available in the past (to my knowledge).

I'll bet announcement at WWDC, shipping immediately thereafter (except for the people who upgrade their GPU to the mid-range card).

Personally I don't we will see Nehalem Mac Pros without it.

Personally, I don't believe they'll ship with it. WWDC Mac Pro release, July Snow Leopard release. Apple will make us pay.

They often announce products that do not ship immediately.

Only when you can preorder the product in question.

i don't foresee a special mac pro event.

Unless it's WWDC, which exists to cater to the Mac Pro's audience.

Only when there is no precedent in product.

Apple needs to advertise the iPhone and the iMac because of their target audience. Apple doesn't need to demo the Mac Pro at an event because it's not a consumer machine.

would have thought the Mac Pro would be the Mac for showing off Snow Leopard preview/demo?
Fixed that for you. WWDC 2009 Snow Leopard preview on Mac Pro is a very real possibility. Snow Leopard could ship at a similar time or some time after.

Like I said, not when they don't have to (since the switch). They needed some hardware at Macworld, that is why the 17" got announced.
I would think that the 17" MacBook Pro would have been released later in January if Apple didn't go to MWSF 2009.

Does anyone remember if Apple has released new machines of any kind - very shortly - before releasing a new cat? It just seems to me if they were close together they'd wait to release the new computers with the new version installed - but I just don't know.:apple:

Original aluminum iMac. Leopard came out two months later.

Apple will make us pay for Snow Leopard because they know that we as Gainestown Mac Pro owners will buy it to get OpenCL and Grand Central. This is virtually a given.

IIRC, Apple indicated they had some sort of problem that caused a delay.

I'm wondering if they'll stager their release dates intentionally, to reduce the number of free replacements. (What's their policy on that previously?)

The problem is that people may wait knowing SL is comming. Personally I'd prefer to them ship with Leopard. This is the stuff we have no idea about though and is too hard to judge because Apple's precedent is all over the place.

I have to agree here, they have made a big deal about the multi processor capabilities of this OS. Apple won't release it later on the basis we will have to pay for OS again, that sounds almost like a conspiracy theory :p

*cough518dayscough*

I say that they'll release the Mac Pro at WWDC and Snow Leopard in July.

We'll see.

Was that the shipping delay to February? I was referring to the original ship date of late January, which is after MWSF (or was that a delay?).
I'm thinking it affected the original ship date (Jan), and continued until they did ship. If I had to guess, there was some issue discovered during early production. Anything from defects to parts didn't show up on time. These can take a while to get sorted, and it took longer than Apple suspected. Caught with their "pants down" so to speak. ;) :p

Have there been many OS releases spanning over 2 WWDCs? Getting people onto the Gainestown Mac Pro would allow some bugs to be picked up and ironed out - would many developers with access to the latests seeds be on Mac Pros/MBPs?

This computer will not be out till sept at the earliest haha!, Iam just glad Iam getting my custom built pc in next few days, apple just too slow at bringing out new hardware.
