becks winning one is fine with me. i'm for anyone but real salt lake...

LA are, to be fair, probably the best team in the league. But they are so heavily hyped it's funny to watch them fail. And I still think US soccer and MLS are getting it badly wrong by playing cup finals in non-neutral venues. Lame.

As for the final, it will be better for the league if LA gets there and wins, and the right result from a sporting perspective. I agree about Real Salt Lake too. Such a silly name anyway.

Ex-Notts County thug Luke Rogers showed Robbie Keane how to finish last night...Keane flubbed a few decent chances, while Rogers took his very well.

I'll believe it when I see it, although obviously I want them to win it. The Galaxy have lost four final games, including a few when they were the favorites. The Galaxy have had many seasons in which they were considered the team to beat, but didn't. Call me jaded.

And only one winner of the Supporters Shield has won the MLS Cup in the last nine years. You probably remember who.

So here's some interesting news: MLS has overtaken the NBA to become America's third best attended sport, behind NFL and Major League Baseball. MLS also ranks 10th in the world among football leagues for average attendance.

Now, I'm sure that doesn't include NASCAR, but let's just pretend that 'sport' doesn't exist.

It's a great milestone for the league, and as the TV ratings improve MLS will continue to put pressure on other American sports. The future is bright. :)

True. The MLS playoff system makes it really easy for favored teams to get upset by also-rans.

I do indeed. :) Columbus was unquestionably the best team in 2008, we really dominated.

If they want to dine off the name of a world famous European club, Salt Lake Stanley is the way to go.

Make it happen, MLS.

Or Accrington Salt Lake? :D I don't mind Sporting Kansas City as much, it's a more generic naming convention. But Real? Ugh. Anything would be better.

:D

each time i hear the MLS will expand i fear i will hear... "Metros"... behind whatever new city that has been awarded the new franchise....

We shouldn't be drawing with Swansea at home if we have any hopes of a top four finish. On the positive side, we didn't lose the match either, so it's probably an improvement over last season.

Swansea played well, they deserved a point.

So, the MLS Cup Final is set, it will be Houston vs LA. The league suits are absolutely desperate for Beckham to lift the cup.

Great game...both Salt Lake and LA played well. LA created more chances, scored more, but also wasted quite a few. Salt Lake had enough chances to take the game to extra time but couldn't finish them.

Robbie Keane still looks skillful, but he is not a clinical finisher. He duffed a couple pretty good chances, hit the post once but did eventually score a pretty nice goal. Beckham drifted in and out of the match but was effective in a few key moments. The real hero has been Galaxy Midfielder Mike Magee, who has now scored in each of his last three playoff matches, and scored the winner tonight.

I expect Galaxy to make quick work of Houston as they will be playing at home in the final. A convenient advantage.

spoiler for barca fans:

athletic club drew with barca... they looked like winning for a good bit... then got a red card in the 89th minute and the game tying goal from messi in the 90th... =(

To be fair, without his goals, you'd have lost that game. And Koscielny's been a liability in almost every other game of the season, I'm sure he'll be back to it next week. I wouldn't let one game influence my opinion of him being anything other than complete turd.

Still, he's better than Jonny Evans.

Errr... so taking the Chelsea game in question, you think his tap in literally gifted to him by Gervinho, and being in the right place for John Terry's slip would've been unachievable by any other player?

Your criticism of Koscielny doesn't really warrant a response, but maybe a suggestion that you haven't actually watched him play this season?

Actually he and Vermaelen (if he stays fit) may turn out to be our best defensive pairing this season. Kos has been immense in virtually every game since the Blackburn match and is currently our best defender.

Agreed.

Reports this morning are saying that we've been approached by Leicester City for permission to speak to Pearson (Nigel).

Pleasingly, we've told them to knob off.

However, more worryingly, BBC are reporting Pearson has asked for permission to speak to Leicester..

Indeed, and Leicester have followed this up by making a further approach.

Word is both clubs will release a statement tomorrow, followed by the Midlands club unveiling Pearson (Nigel) at a press event on Wednesday. That then leaves us with a few issues to attend to...

  1. Find a new manager. This is quite important, as the manager tells the players what to do and stuff.
  2. Sort out the backroom staff. Pearson has assembled a very good team so far as player recruitment and scouting are concerned, and I hope we can keep them. Unfortunately, I suspect they'll be moving with Pearson.
  3. Keep hold of our players. The likes of Rosenior and Chester must stay in East Yorkshire, it's a certainty that Pearson will attempt to sign key members of our playing staff in January.
All par for the course when your manager leaves, of course. The key thing is the identity of the new gaffer – looking at the list of candidates who were in the frame for the Leicester job, I don't know who I'd go for (and there's a fair few who wouldn't come here, in all honesty). The signs seem to point to a young up-and-comer rather than an established name, hopefully it won't be another Phil Parkinson situation.

What's Phil Brown doing these days? ;)

Oh, and we have to invent a Martin O'Neill link too, I think that' mandatory.

I'm traveling and watching a rebroadcast of the Arsenal - WBA match from my hotel room. Gervinho has a disturbing hairdo. i just can't get over it. Oh, and I think Arteta looks better than a squad player. RVP is such an excellent striker - when he's healthy...

Now the gunners are tied with the 'Pool on points, but their form is much better. We need to step it up if we want to push for a top four finish.

He was on Sky Sports News last night, having a go in goal at PNE's training ground. He pulled off a decent save, as it happens.

Incidentally, if anyone reckons Iain Dowie's in for the soon-to-be-vacant manager's job at City I'll report them to the mods faster than you can say 'Sloth'. Just so you know, like. :D ;)

How about Mickey Adams? :p:p:p

See, there are worse choices than Dowie.

Honestly, he needs to look up the word 'slave' and then apologise profusely. I'm sure there're many slaves who'd love to be earning £50k+ a week

For 50k a week, even I would at least consider wearing a Man U shirt. ;)

....seeing as I'll probably never reach that number even as a yearly wage.

Hmm. Word is tonight that Newcastle United's St James' Park is going to be renamed the Sports Direct Arena, after the company of their ever popular owner Mike Ashley.

Apparently it's a short term thing until a longer term deal can be signed with a major brand. The ground has been officially known as 'Sports Direct at St James’ Park' for a couple of years now, but it looks as if the traditional name is going to finally be given the elbow.

To say that this news will displease Newcastle supporters is putting it very mildly indeed.
