Hmm. Word is tonight that Newcastle United's St James' Park is going to be renamed the Sports Direct Arena, after the company of their ever popular owner Mike Ashley.

Apparently it's a short term thing until a longer term deal can be signed with a major brand. The ground has been officially known as 'Sports Direct at St James’ Park' for a couple of years now, but it looks as if the traditional name is going to finally be given the elbow.

To say that this news will displease Newcastle supporters is putting it very mildly indeed.
it displeases me.

They won't be the last club who has to go this route. It's all about the almighty £.

Most stadia in the US have the same affliction. I hate it. The names never have a chance to stick anyway, because naming rights deals usually only last a few years. It essentially robs the stadium of part of it's identity.

It can be worth big money though, and most owners are in for profit.

Maybe we ought to get this thread sponsored to raise revenue? The current thread name isn't really commercially viable I suspect, so rebranding it would offer a lucrative way for us to secure significant additional income on our revenue streams, maximise our brand ethos and grow ourselves sustainably.

It's the way forward, apparently...

For example, the home of NFL's Miami Dolphins has had 6 different names in the 24 years since it was built.

In reality, everyone is still going to call it St. James Park though.

2011-12 Champions League discussion

HELP.

I just moved to Germany and am trying to get up to speed on the 2011-12 Champions league.

Are there any smallish teams that I should hope upset the big guys?

Champions League

I don't know about "smallish sides" but there are some sides that seemingly don't have a chance.... Napoli, Villareal, FC Basel 1893, FC Oţelul Galaţi, Trabzonspor AŞ, LOSC Lille Métropole.. etc etc

Unfortunately, the Champions League isn't a competition where the 'smallish teams' are encouraged to do well. It detracts attention and cash away from the big boys.

Mind, you're very fortunate in that the Bundesliga is a very fine league indeed – it's actually the world's best attended league in terms of average attendance, thanks in no small part to reasonably priced tickets when compared to Europe's other top divisions. Frankfurt doesn't have a top flight representative at the moment unfortunately – main club Eintracht Frankfurt were relegated last season – but if you can get along to a match or two there are worse ways to spend a couple of hours.

one of the few leagues where you can drink in the stands... i believe... Eintracht Frankfurt have a very cool badge/crest:

In other news, Christmas is coming and if you're anything like me you're probably wondering what gift to buy the Bradford City fan in your life. If so, why not pop along to the Bantams' club shop and pick up a copy of their official 2012 calendar?

dele_is_mr_july.jpg

Lots of top Bradford City stars are pictured, as you can see from the cover – including, inexplicably, Dele Adebola in the bottom right corner. Yes, that's Dele Adebola the Hull City player pictured there. In his Hull City kit.

Heh. :D
