England 1 Spain 0

Obviously our victory over the World and European champions is a sure indication that we're guaranteed to win Euro 2012. Because that's how it works, obviously.

Urgh, I was nearly sick over the ITV commentary, not to mention the BBC Sport articles that followed the whistle. Trouble with England is they're in denial and think they're brilliant, not to mention their pundits being completely incapable of having a neutral perspective.

You guys beat Spain in a friendly! Well done.. this is the same Spain that got beat by Portugal in a recent friendly - pretty much the same Portugal team that drew with Bosnia on Friday night!

Honestly.. is it necessary for the BBC to gloat about England beating "world champions" Spain? Given it was a friendly, and that England didn't exactly play nice football at all and defended much of the game (defensive tactics in a friendly?).

It's rather tiresome, that's for sure (my own comments on the matter were made with tongue planted firmly in cheek in case anyone was wondering).

We'll probably follow this up with a loss against Sweden in a few days, leading to calls for the manager's head and criticism of the players. It's how we roll.

Andy Townsend makes me want to bash my ears in with a hammer.

That was easily the most Italian looking England performance I've seen thus far.

Still, we beat the best national football team in the whole of Cyprus this week, so nyeah. In a packed stadium aswell. It was pure mobbed.

looks like it's gonna be a typical championship:

England winning his friendly by playing super defensive & lucky punch and drumming up the "best team in the world" hype just on time

Germany doing tactics and personal experiments against ukraine and draws 3:3 coming back after a 3:1 in the second half and already drums up the "we are in a crisis" hype just on time

You guys are years behind... we Yanks beat the Spaniards back in 2008. :D

It's interesting to note that England pretty much followed Mourinho's playbook in their tactics, and it worked. If you play football against Spain you'll be beaten.

Clearly it was down to the rousing support given by your old chum, "Mr Portsmouth"

Infact, here he is, waiting for his train back to Portsmouth after Saturday's game :)

I didn't fancy getting a frontal shot of him, infact I didn't want to go anywhere near him

I flipped on Fox Soccer Channel last night, and who should I see but your Wednesday contesting an FA Cup match against Morcambe! Something of a close finish, but Megatron has steered you though to the next round. The camera was situated pretty low to the ground, it gave the viewer more of a sense of being inside the stadium, which was nice. Good luck against Aldershot! :)

What a strange person.

So then, it's official – Pearson (Nigel) has gone. He was pictured a little earlier this evening posing with a blue shirt somewhere in the East Midlands, and as such he is no longer the manager of Hull City but instead the new manager of Leicester City (again).

More than anything, it's a disappointing albeit unsurprising conclusion to a week of speculation. Despite the complaints of some naysayers (given a regular platform in the local media), he'd done a pretty fine job here. He inherited a dressing room divided into cliques and filled with deadwood still lurking from our Premier League misadventure, and in its place moulded a team of vibrant, motivated youngsters who have spent much of the season lurking on the cusp of the play-off places. One wonders how far he could have taken his young charges. We'll never know now, and instead there's a very real risk the side will be dismantled in the January transfer window.

Leicester's press release was quickly followed by one of our own, announcing Pearson's replacement – speculation over the weekend had suggested our former player-manager (and current Manchester United reserve gaffer) Warren Joyce would be our new boss, but that move looked to have broken down yesterday for reasons unknown. Instead, our new gaffer is none other than Nick 'Nicky' Barmby. Strangely, the club statement refers to Barmby as agreeing to take on '...the role of Caretaker Manager for the foreseeable future', as well as saying that '...there is no present interest in pursuing alternative managerial candidates at this time'. The two statements are at odds with one another, perhaps suggesting a bit of wiggle room allowing Barmby to step aside should things not work out.

Judging by the reaction elsewhere, it would seem that most City fans' views on the situation reflect my own. He's a club hero, and we love our Nick. He's ace, knows the club and players better than any of the other candidates, and he knows what a tenfoot is. However, while he's spent the last couple of seasons with us in a player-coach capacity he has zero managerial experience, and there's the risk that if this all goes pear shaped it'll tarnish his reputation.

Basically, we're taking a hell of a punt here.

Jaffa, unfortunately hiring ex-club heroes as Managers doesn't normally bode well. The one that immediately springs to mind was Rangers appointing John Greig not long after he lifted the Cup Winners Cup as captain... it just didn't work out. However Nicky seems to have been under the wing of Pearson for a while rather like our very own Ally McCoist who served an apprenticeship with Walter Smith. 6 games into the season I thought Ally would be going... now he's flying high. I think a pragmatic approach is best!

Did Costa Rica not beat Scotland at Italia '90? Great team, world beaters!

That seems to be a universal theme in sport worldwide: great players rarely make great managers / coaches.

Costa Rica's last World Cup adventure in 2006 didn't amount to very much. So if they're world-beaters, they only do it seldomly.

And it seems to have been true for a long time. I think that the ultra-competitiveness, egomania, and ambition that are needed to become such a great player are too detrimental to a manager/coach skill set. And those traits don't disappear just because the person has stopped playing.

Didn't work out too well for Alan Shearer either...

Hence why this move concerns me. He's very well regarded in these parts and as much as anything there's the concern that if this doesn't work out that goodwill will be spoilt.

On the plus side though, it's not like he's stepping in to do a firefighting job on a team in a relegation scrap. We're well-placed in the table, are playing well, and we have a young team who evidently have respect for Barmby so it's not like he has a battle on his hands to win over the dressing room. He also is a popular figure with supporters so he should enjoy a lengthy honeymoon period. Basically, if he's going to plunge into the deep end as a rookie gaffer there are far worse situations to be in.

As I say I'm not comfortable with the situation, but it's the one we find ourselves in and we could do worse. His assistant manager is yet to be announced – one would hope it's an experienced individual who can provide the advice and guidance Barmby is going to need. Because it will be needed.

Has anyone ever told Alex Ferguson that ultra-competitiveness, egomania, and ambition are detrimental to being a successful manager? :D
