Hence why this move concerns me. He's very well regarded in these parts and as much as anything there's the concern that if this doesn't work out that goodwill will be spoilt.

On the plus side though, it's not like he's stepping in to do a firefighting job on a team in a relegation scrap. We're well-placed in the table, are playing well, and we have a young team who evidently have respect for Barmby so it's not like he has a battle on his hands to win over the dressing room. He also is a popular figure with supporters so he should enjoy a lengthy honeymoon period. Basically, if he's going to plunge into the deep end as a rookie gaffer there are far worse situations to be in.

As I say I'm not comfortable with the situation, but it's the one we find ourselves in and we could do worse. His assistant manager is yet to be announced – one would hope it's an experienced individual who can provide the advice and guidance Barmby is going to need. Because it will be needed.

Does anyone know what he'll be wearing on the sidelines? Will he go for a nice dark suit, a tracksuit with his initials on it, or shorts and boots ala Owen Coyle?

I imagine a tracksuit/benchcoat combo. After all, he is still part of the playing staff so – rather thrillingly – we currently have a player/manager. Well, occasional player/caretaker manager. :D

I love the concept of the player-manager. It sets up so many strange possibilities.

Blatter is disgusting, a stain on the sport.

The corrupt nature of FIFA is the result of Blatter's incompetence or, worse, his own corruptness. Unfortunately what FIFA needs is a root-and-branch purging, and that is not going to happen.

I know it's been a long time since we had one in a US major sport. I'm thinking Pete Rose was probably the last one. Maybe that's why there hasn't been another!

I can't think of the last time a player-manager won major silverware either - I'm sure it happens in lower league football, but in in the top divisions in Europe it must be pretty rare, especially in the modern era of hyper-athleticism.

The Suarez-Evra case drags on. If the FA are charging him one has to assume they think he's guilty. Then again, he must be innocent because Sepp said so. The only thing I am sure of is that the FA and FIFA will bungle things in the end, one way or another.

Yeah, that's even rarer. Bill Russell for the Celtics in the late 1960s. In baseball you probably have to go back at least 60 years to Lou Boudreau. Maybe that's why no one does it anymore.

Ruud Gullit lifted the FA Cup as Chelsea's player/manager back in the 1990s, and — a little closer to home for you your Lordship — Uncle Kenny did the double with Liverpool in the 1980s whilst performing dual duties.

Piece of cake for our Nick, then. :)

Apples to apples, obviously.

It would appear that the Terry case is ramping up as well, with a few tabloid headlines suggesting the police want him charged.

As for everyone's favourite lunch buddy Sepp, he's said sorry so it's all ok now

Great result for us then – a 2-0 win – and if the radio commentary and comments from twitter-toting Tigers in attendance are anything to go by it was a very fine performance indeed.

As a further pleasing sub-plot, our second goal was scored by young Cameron Stewart – not only was it his first senior goal but he scored it on his comeback from a serious knee injury sustained nine months ago this very day. Superb.

Oh, and we wore never-before seen amber shorts as an alternative to our usual black, so as not to clash with Derby's monochrome arsewear.

All in all, a good afternoon by all accounts. :)

Fine colours indeed, and I'm sure you cut a stylish dash whenever you take to the field. Just make sure none of your team mates refer to your shirts as being yellow or gold – you wear amber. Amber.

Our five-a-side colours are white shirts – we don't have a proper kit as such, we just wear something white. I tip up wearing my white 2010-11 City away shirt, as modelled by erstwhile Tiger and industrial-strength irritant Craig Fagan...
