Hence why this move concerns me. He's very well regarded in these parts and as much as anything there's the concern that if this doesn't work out that goodwill will be spoilt.
On the plus side though, it's not like he's stepping in to do a firefighting job on a team in a relegation scrap. We're well-placed in the table, are playing well, and we have a young team who evidently have respect for Barmby so it's not like he has a battle on his hands to win over the dressing room. He also is a popular figure with supporters so he should enjoy a lengthy honeymoon period. Basically, if he's going to plunge into the deep end as a rookie gaffer there are far worse situations to be in.
As I say I'm not comfortable with the situation, but it's the one we find ourselves in and we could do worse. His assistant manager is yet to be announced one would hope it's an experienced individual who can provide the advice and guidance Barmby is going to need. Because it will be needed.
I imagine a tracksuit/benchcoat combo. After all, he is still part of the playing staff so – rather thrillingly – we currently have a player/manager. Well, occasional player/caretaker manager.![]()
He's a proper tit.
I love the concept of the player-manager. It sets up so many strange possibilities.
I know it's been a long time since we had one in a US major sport. I'm thinking Pete Rose was probably the last one. Maybe that's why there hasn't been another!
I can't think of the last time a player-manager won major silverware either
Ruud Gullit lifted the FA Cup as Chelsea's player/manager back in the 1990s, and a little closer to home for you your Lordship Uncle Kenny did the double with Liverpool in the 1980s whilst performing dual duties.
Piece of cake for our Nick, then.![]()
The Suarez-Evra case drags on. If the FA are charging him one has to assume they think he's guilty. Then again, he must be innocent because Sepp said so.The only thing I am sure of is that the FA and FIFA will bungle things in the end, one way or another.
As I predicted he's sporting trainers, tracksuit bottoms and a big Hull City benchcoat.Does anyone know what he'll be wearing on the sidelines?
Fine colours indeed, and I'm sure you cut a stylish dash whenever you take to the field.Just make sure none of your team mates refer to your shirts as being yellow or gold you wear amber. Amber.
Our five-a-side colours are white shirts we don't have a proper kit as such, we just wear something white.I tip up wearing my white 2010-11 City away shirt, as modelled by erstwhile Tiger and industrial-strength irritant Craig Fagan...
