Babcock should have played Howard against Washington the other night. Two teams without a loss yet, one of them will leave the game with its first. What's he do? Plays Conklin instead.

- Wow, hurt Columbus' goalie already!

Who knows what he was thinking there ... I don't know why he played Conklin for that game.

Oh yeah, I forgot, Howard's wife had a baby over the weekend. I suppose that's a good reason to not play him.

Do I dare bring up the visor debate?

Let's just be honest-as long as Grapes is alive, breathing and "coherent" (meaning he does know what day it is but anything beyond that is questionable), visors will never be mandatory.

That said, there are some very valid arguments for not using them-fogging up, causing injuries themselves from breaking on guy's faces, the issue of starting a fight with a visor.

The fog can't be fixed-you can't help plastic showing the air coming from a human. The latter two can be addressed with better and stronger plastic and elimination of said rule.

Er.....Don Cherry doesn't have as much power as you're attributing to him. Really.

The reason is that the players don't want the visors. Plain and simple. They can't wait to get them off once they're done with Junior. It's not because they want to show how tough they are (although that may be a reason for a minority), it's like you said: they want to be able to see better, and the visor distorts their vision.

I remember when Sundin injured his eye because of a high stick (or maybe it was a puck?), and he tried to wear a visor after that. He took it off after one shift. He just couldn't see well enough with it on.

I really wonder how long Pronger will play with a visor on. One game? One week? We'll see......

I agree with the argument that players need to have more respect for each other and do more to control their sticks and keep them down. High sticks weren't as big of an issue 20-30 or so years ago, but they seem to have become more of an issue in the past 10-15 years. I think that one of the causes is the fact that players in Junior and below wear visors and full face cages. They feel invincible with a full mask on, and when your stick hits someone in the mask, it just bounces off. So, you don't have to be as responsible with your stick when you're learning how to play. And that's where the problems begin. Once these kids make the pros and the masks/visors come off, they aren't wired to keep the stick down.

I was listening to a radio show on the FAN590, and the host was telling a story about his kid starting to play hockey and having to wear the full face cage. He said that all the kids thought it was the funniest thing to hit each other in the head with their sticks, gloves, whatever....because it didn't hurt.

I don't know what the solution is. Obviously, they can't tell kids to stop wearing cages/visors, but I also don't think that they should make visors mandatory in the NHL. These guys are professionals, and I think they have a right to choose to wear one or not. They know the risks. Being an NHLer comes with a number of risks.....some can be eliminated, some can be minimized, and some are always just going to be there.

I'd love to see some stats showing the # of high sticks before helmets were mandatory vs. the # of high sticks since helmets were made mandatory in 1979 (actually, I think it would be better if the post-mandatory year was when most of the players were wearing actually helmets. When they were made mandatory, NHL players who didn't wear one were allowed to continue to not wear one).

bonus question-last team he played with....

I was going to reference Craig MacTavish somewhere in my post, but I figured it was long enough already.;)

I guessed his last team wrong (I pictured him as a Ranger before he retired, but wikipedia says I'm wrong), so I'll let someone else guess the bonus question.:p

cuestakid.....no comment on my wall of text post?

^^^^

No because I agree 100%. Anyone who has played the game knows there are a dozen places on the body where there is no padding and never will be because it restricts movement-likewise, the league, in its efforts to curb headshots and head injuries, won't make something that could cause more head trauma (players not able to brace themselves because they can't see from the fog of the visor) mandatory just to avoid another type of injury that the visors themselves don't 100% solve.

You are right that Junior players can't wait to get rid of them and current players don't want anything to interfere with their line of sight.

However, I do find it troubling that kids think its ok to bash each other on the head because they have the cage. This is part of the larger issue of educating players on not targeting the head. Kids think that because their heroes do it, its ok for them to do it.

The Flyers DON'T show up in Montreal last night:eek: Where's the D:confused: Home in bed resting:rolleyes: And I'm not impressed with Bryzgalov either:mad:

Check out Lil Otav's new jersey Freak'n cool...:D

Surely can we not talk about the Rangers home opener/new Garden reveal. (which now my seats are awful but that's for another day lol. )

I remember a Sharks game a while ago (96 or 97 I think) where we played Mario, Jags, Francis and company. The final was 10-8- SHARKS!

I also remember, more recently a different sharks game against Detroit. The wings were up 3-0 after like 10 minutes. We switched goalies.

We won 9-4. We put NINE pucks past Domink Hasek.

I feel for coache's in games like this-when it starts raining goals, it can be hard to stop it...

^^^ It happens.

When the Wings fail, it is usually epic.

This past weekend, they played undefeated Washington ... having allowed only 7 goals in 5 games. Final: 7-1 Caps.

Again, just the other day, played Columbus, who had yet to earn their first win of the season. Final: 4-1 Blue Jackets.

WTF?

I'd kind of like to talk about it, actually :D Looking at getting tickets for an Avs-Rangers game in a few months and couldn't believe how expensive tickets at MSG are.

Sorry.....didn't notice this post. We don't have to talk about it.....we all know who won.:D

I'm surprised no one has mentioned this beauty of a post-game interview:

am i the only bruins fan who doesn't hate the habs? the rivalry is fun, and makes the games really exciting, but at the end of the day i think they're a great team.

last year's playoffs for example. the bruins v canadiens series was easily my favourite.

That was a crazy game for sure. I haven't seen a score like that in a long time. I bet both goalies felt horrible for giving up that many in a game.

Anyway.. I hope the Red Wings can break their losing streak against Minnisota tonight.

The Leafs beat the league-leading Penguins tonight 4-3. A solid effort, which saw Kessel score his league-leading 10th goal, and Tim Connolly score his first as a Leaf (in his second game played). Reimer is still on the IR, so Gustavsson started in nets and played his best game so far.

I'm liking what I'm seeing!:D

And to top it off, Mats Sundin was in attendance and got a long standing ovation: http://livenews.thestar.com/Event/Live_Leafs_vs_Penguins_Gameday/17931660
