Does anyone actually find this sort of crap entertaining? I'm enjoying the Sharks/Blues series because they're playing good, clean hockey. The big hits and occasional fights are great, but if I wanted to watch 60 minutes of fighting, I'd watch UFC.

Well said, I like big hits but this season there are too many hits/fights. Shannahan should be a bit more strict on this.

On a side note any pre-game speculation for New Jersey vs. Florida, Detroit vs. Nashville, or 'Nucks vs. Kings you guys?

It's the dirty crap I can't take. The B's/Caps were rough but not out of control the first two games. They are getting into it more now as emotions run higher. The cheap shots don't have a place in the game though.

Tonight is relaxation night. I'm going to watch a couple of the games, have a beer and relax. And, while I sort of want Florida to win, I mostly don't care about these games. Watching Vancouver lose in 4 wouldn't hurt my feelings... but I suspect they will come out with some fight tonight.

I feel the opposite :D.
I need Detroit to win so we aren't trailing 2 games, and I want assurance the LA is going on to the semis. I can't wait till the game in an hour!

Shanahan should be a bit more strict on this.

Is Shany but a vassal for Bettman, and his quest for a larger audience for his "product"?

Discuss.

As for me, I wish they would go back to actual hockey skills, in the pure sense, and stop targeting skilled players.

Just because they make the journeymen guys look so pedestrian is no reason to go after them.

Step 1: Look up 'vassal' -- done

Shanahan is not serving Bettman necessarily but the NHL as a whole (the players, owners, GMs, NHL mgmt, etc.). Your use of "product" is extremely important here. That is exactly what it is and they need to manage it such that it gets bought up.

Too many suspensions and boring play = fewer "sales"
Not enough suspensions and egregious attacks = fewer happy real fans (on the whole I'm guessing). But - maybe this means more fans in general? The data supports it.

The NHL ratings are as high as they have been in a while. (search for "NHL Ratings") One place claims they are up 50% over last year. And, why is that? I'm guessing the fights play a big part.

People are talking about the Pens/Flyers that don't know crap about hockey. "Did ya see the game? Oh, how about those fights!!?" -- right.

Shanahan, Bettman, the owners, GMs, and players (association) need to carefully design their product and craft their message such that it maximizes revenue across a number of different demographics and that is a tricky thing to do.

But, make no mistake, it's a product run by a monopoly that has one interest in mind - making money.

EDIT: Found this after I posted and found it pretty funny!

Everything you said supports my belief that the Original Six level of hockey is dead.

R.I.P. professional hockey, as I knew it. :(

Oh well, when NFL fans get sick of their situation, they move over to college ball, so go Canada Juniors, both boys and girls.

Oh yeah, the girls just won something, didn't they? :p

I watched the shannyexplainer-

While I understand his points (made no attempt to move out of the way, no opposing player near by, did actually lead with shoulder to head) he was going for a puck that left as soon as he tried to stop the puck from going by him.

I said when it happened and I will repeat-it was not worth a penalty let alone a major.

As for the grand scheme of the playoffs- So long as there are fans who will pay $85 for tickets and $25 to see line brawls and cheap shots, the league can claim any figures it wants because they get lumped into the same "viewership" and "attendance" categories as we do (actual fans who know the game, appreciate its beauty and can scorn those who need to be).

That said I cannot recall any playoff that has been this wild and out of control.

Just saw Torres FLY into Hossa-they better throw Torres out because someone will put him through the glass. Torres has a major history of ending player's playoff years

When is someone going to beat the **** out of Raffi Torres or ban him for life. FME.

The vid isn't up yet but he just laid out a Blackhawk with what should have been a major.

Love to know what all those experts are thinking now, after they chose the Devils in four or five games. The better team has a 2-1 lead in the series. The Panthers arent an offensive powerhouse, but they have a very good defense, and aside from the early goals let in by Theodore, they have a very good goaltending tandem. They are going to be a tough out for any team in the East, even in this series, which is quite evident.

Asham got a slap on the wrist-4 games is nothing-

many have tried to take him out-hes like Sean Avery-the only way to get rid of him is for him to do it to himself....

Raffi Torres is a ****ing scumbag.

He belongs on that short list with guys like Matt Cooke, Steve Ott, Sean Avery, etc.

remember when mcquaid kicked the **** out of him? :D:D

backstrom got suspended for game 4. hahaha.

They showed a vid when Torres took out a Hawk last year in round 1 as well (he was playing for VAN).

I was betting that if the game got out of hand last night that someone would have beaten him senseless.

Suspension update:
Backstrom: 1
Neal: 1
Asham: 4

If it was the regular season Neal would have got three:mad::confused: And Assham who cares:rolleyes:
The cover of this mornings Phila Daily News:D

When I wrote that post I hadn't seen the video. I just watched it. **** raffi torres. Clearly left his feet and drilled Hossa in the head when Hossa couldn't even see him coming. He should be suspended for the rest of the season. However, the joke that is the NHL front office will never do that. So hopefully karma will get him soon enough.

He should be suspended for the rest of the playoffs and for 5-10 games of next season (if there is a season). I can't believe he took out Hossa a year to the day that he took out Seabrook.

I think we can all agree that Shanahan and co. are doing a ***** job. It's even more inconsistent than when Campbell was in charge of discipline. No one knows what to expect next. Also, a dangerous play is a dangerous play: injury should not play a role in the degree punishment.

Some good games tonight...... I hope LA can close out the series.

I actually think the league/Shanny hit those on the head. Backstrom gets the auto from the match, Neal didn't injure, but clearly intended to injure. I think 2 could've been possible, but Game 4 is so huge that it's more than just one game. I really dislike Shanny/Neal's response to the charge though. That's what would bump it to 2 to me. 4 for Asham makes sense from Shanny's explanation.

Torres has been suspended indefinitely, pending an in-person hearing on Friday. That means at least 5 games.

http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2012/04/18/coyotes_torres_suspended_indefinitely/

That only meant 5 regular season games. Asham had an in-person and got 4. I'm sure it will be 5+ based on the event and his past history though.

From the article:
A hearing will be held Friday at the NHL's New York office to determine Torres' fate -- a process required by league rules for disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan to hand out a ban lasting longer than five games.

From the article:

So potentially longer than 5 games, not a given. But in this situation, almost a certainty.

Any predictions for tonight? I'll take Philly, New York, and Vancouver. I just think LA wins in 5, but Pitt doesn't have it in them. Also a bit disappointed the 7:30 games aren't staggered 7/7:30 like most nights.
