I think I know someone who does not want the kings to win tomorrow more than the Devils and their fans-

LAPD!

I don't think they will have enough cops to ensure a riot does NOT ensue.

Yeah, really. I told my wife that exact thing after the game. One thing's for sure....the riot will be a lot smaller than if the Lakers/Clippers/Dodgers would win.

Well, I'm calling the Cup for the Kings in 4. Quick was absolutely astonishing tonight. He was in the zone like I've rarely seen. The Devils owned the puck the first period and should have won that game. But they just fell apart. Brodeur looked demoralized and made mistakes I would not have expected him to make. Marty is usually more controlled. He looked very sloppy and tired.

This will all be over Wednesday and the cup will go to LA.

I don't see how you can blame Brodeur for that loss. The first goal that went in shouldn't have counted, and after it did, the Devils lost their composure. They didn't help him out in their own zone, and they didn't help him by getting any scoring chances and scoring any goals. If you can't score a single goal, you can't win the game.

Kovalchuk is playing injured.

KINGS!!!

ill be there on wednesday!

Take me with you!! :D:D:D

I'm sorry, I should have been more clear. I was in no way blaming Brodeur. I was blaming the Devils for losing it. But Marty did lose his composure later in the game. He looked great early on. The Devils defense was off, but the offense looked good earlier and should have scored at least one goal. Quick was in the zone. But Marty blew that third one- he should have been in butterfly, not falling down. He could have made that save otherwise.

I'm just being honest. I frickin' LOVE Brodeur. I have one of his Sher-Wood sticks. You are absolutely right that this was a team loss.

Nobody's perfect.

I saw the goals during the game, and I've watched the replays, and I don't think Brodeur could have done much of anything to stop any of them. As you know, sometimes there are goals that the goalie can't even stop. Those goals happen when the rest of the team aren't playing proper defense.

Anyway, I just saw on twitter that The Habs are going to name Michel Therrien their next head coach in the next couple of days (from @DarrenDrager). I guess he'll go back to having his name pronounced Mee-shell since he'll be in Montreal..... I don't think he was the best choice out there, but I guess he was the best French-Canadian choice.....

I think most of those goals were as you describe, however, the third goal was preventable if Brodeur had maintained proper position. He would probably tell you the same. As a goalie myself, I would have admitted that. You leave the net open, that's your fault.

But you're right- the Devils defense was crap all night.

I'd be surprised if Quick didn't get both the Conn-Smythe and the Vezina;)

That first goal was utter trash - as someone who has been pulling for LA since they beat Vancouver. Once it was 2-0 and NJ didn't score to end the 2nd, game over. Marty has played more than adequately for any team not facing the LA juggernaut to win the Cup.

Since the Vezina voting is prior to the playoffs, still a toss up.

Quick: 4 less wins (35) in 7 more games than Hank (though pt totals from Ws + OTLs same), 0.02 less GAA (1.95), 0.01 less SV% (.929), but 2 more SOs (10-8). Throw in East Coast bias and Hank "being due" for his first and I think Quick gets the shaft. The real Quick national lovefest started in the playoffs after voting. I think anyone could make an argument for either (Rinne has no chance and shouldn't have even been #3, Smith should have) though.

Someone explain to me why the Habs rehired (yes, rehired....he was their coach between 2000-2003) a coach with a career coaching record below .500?

His overall NHL record:

212 wins, 182 losses, 22 ties, 46 overtime losses. So if you combine the losses and OT losses:

W-L: 212-228, which is a .481 record

His record when he coached Montreal his first time around:

77 wins, 77 losses, 22 ties, 14 overtime losses. Combining losses and OT losses:

77 wins, 91 losses, which is a .458 record.

And yes, I realize that the team gets one point when you lose in OT, but in my mind I still consider it a loss.

He's obviously not the best coach available, but is he really the best French speaking coach available?

Another thought that I heard said on the radio this morning:

If Bob Hartley and Michel Therrien are deserving of another chance at being a head coach in the NHL, surely Wayne Gretzky deserves another chance (that is, if he wants to coach again)?

Probably. Not many French speaking coaches and Montreal is a tough sell for people to come into from what I gather.

Sure. Melrose got his return, Gretzky can too if he returns. I doubt he'd want to, though. Sure didn't work well the first time. A management/GM role would be more likely, but also not a given (hit/miss with Team Canada).

I went to a stick and puck with my hockey playing friend, also, my new skates.

1) He's awesome, but has been playing since he was a kid and coaches kids. It was great with him showing me proper passing, shooting, stance and skating techniques. It helped get my confidence up.
2) New skates are so goddamn painful! They are so stiff and the soles of my feet were reeling, but if you looked at the blades from behind me, they were like this: | | rather than how my old skates were, which went like this: / \ I was able to transfer subtle movements in my feet to the ice and was much better :)

Ha, sorry I'm posting my miles away from NHL hockey experiences, it's just watching NHL has spurred me on to try this sport, and it's so fun!

Sounds like some solid progress, congrats! Did you get your skates baked? I guess that probably wouldn't help the stiffness much, but might help with the soles part shaping to your feet. I never got my skates baked until my last pair of goalie skates got it for free and I'm all about it - even though I still use my ancient ref/player skates that aren't baked all the time.

Sticks and pucks is probably the best place to work on the basics and skills before hopping into games.

New skates hurt no matter what til you break them in- even baked. Just wait til you get better (and you will, believe me), that's when the real fun begins.

The first game I ever won was a shootout. The score was 2-2 after overtime. I skated to the bench and the guys said, "Are you OK for this?" The day before, I had worked on breakaways with my coach. I just said, "Boys, we just won this game, trust me." And we did. The other goalie let one get by him and I let none past in a best of three. My team cleared the bench and mobbed me with hugs. It was the most awesome feeling in the world. In another, I blew 5 goals in the first period. The score was 2-5. My head was just not where it needed to be. On the first period break, the captain says to me, "Lee, those goals were tough, but I am asking you to forget they happened. I believe in you and know what you can do. Act like the score is 0-0." It worked. I blocked all their shots after and we murdered them 9-5.

You'll make a winning goal at some point. Just keep working. It's a never-ending learning experience and it is so much damn fun.

No need to call it a bandwagon, there have been plenty of people who like the kings. Go to the games they are usually pretty full and all you see is the black/silver and sometimes the old purple and yellow jerseys.

Thanks guys! It's great fun and brilliant getting help from my friend out on the ice. He said I'll get more out of open games than the stick and puck soon, just wants me to break my skates in first, the last thing I want is to go on for a shift and not be able to skate as fast as I need/can because my feet hurt...

Trying to stay in a hockey stance is hard, I'd be skating around thinking that I'm in it and he'd come over and tell me to get lower! Doesn't help that I'm 6" and he's 5"5', but I trust him and just let him teach me like I'm a 6" 8-year-old :)

The skates don't like to be baked according to the tech at my hockey shop, but I'm going to skate a few more hours and might get some superfeet footbeds if my soles still hurt, they apparently support arches a bit better.

Yup, true, but as a Detroit fan, I'm fine calling myself a bandwagoner LA fan since their first round victory. Just tone down the Cartman "Go Kings Go!" a bit and we're cool. I'm actually a South Park fan and don't get why LA has that.

Ahhhhhh gotcha....... I have only seen a few episodes of South Park, so I am unfamiliar with the reference.

Nope. Did you see Quick just now on that power play? Unbelievable. Marty is great, but Quick has definitely proven himself more than worthy in this series.

Nope? Okay then :p

I don't see how one has to do with the other. I didn't say anything negative about Quick- he is amazing. He proved himself to be a premiere goalie in the league well before the playoffs even started.

This is Brodeur's 200th playoff game. 1 out of every 8 of those has been a shutout. That's 12.5% of the playoff games he's started. That's unreal. He has won more than half of the playoff games that he's played. Brodeur has always had that special ability to steal a game on his own for his team. I've seen it many, many times over his 20 year career.

I don't think you're giving Brodeur the respect he deserves......

Can't believe the lack of shots but still interesting play so far through 2 periods - total opposite of a Rangers or Caps game from earlier rounds, heh.

First period it felt inevitable that NJ would scrape out a win. Now it's starting to lean in LA's favor. If they just get 1 to go in, calling game over.

Oh not at all, he's awesome. As I said before, I own one of his Sher-Wood sticks and swear by it. Looks like the tide has turned in his favor too. That's it. NJ stays alive.
