Depends on your metric.

On value per win, absolutely suck.

Wow. Expert analysis. Anytime I want to talk baseball, I'll be sure to find you.

In 1996 the Braves had a $53M payroll and the Yanks' was 61M. I guess that $8M made all the difference. It must have paid for Jim Leyritz. :p

In 1999, the Braves had a $79M payroll and the Yanks' $91...That extra 3M difference must have accounted for the 0 wins the Braves got in that series.

You know as well as I do that a payroll can only do so much - ask a fan of the Phillies or the Red Sox. Injuries, bad decisions, a tough schedule and a billion other factors can impact the wins/losses of a team. They still have to play the games. But to cast a team off, and say they "suck" is just ignorant.

I recall many playoff games in the last decade and a half that didn't even sell out in Atlanta. Can you say the same thing about playoff games in New York? Pretty embarrassing for the "team of the 90's".

Hey hey now, I wasn't busting on the Yankees. I think I've suffered enough this week. :(

I'm sorry....:(

The point was it doesn't matter what the payroll is....if 2/3 of your team is on the DL, there's a chance you aren't going to do very well.

Those that know me know that I'm not a gloater, so I definitely didn't mean it in a bad way. I know when your offense starts coming off of the DL, the Red Sox will play the Yankees annoyingly tough as they always do. The AL East should be extremely entertaining for the rest of the year.

That's because Atlanta is like the worst sports city in the world. What's that got to do with it? ;)

 I'll forgive you, only because gsugolfer was being a bitter asshat and raised your hackles.

There is actually an intelligent discussion to be had about baseball economics and the fairness of the current salary cap (and this is not an anti-Yankee discussion, the Red Sox are gluttonous spenders too) vs. the cheap owners that collect revenue sharing money and never spend anything on their teams - but it does not seem like that's where gsugolfer was heading.

I'm also not a gloater, people that do it deserve to be dropkicked. You can enjoy your team's success without making another person feel bad - about something none of us had any direct influence on. Obviously playful jibing among friends is exempt.

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but I felt really bad for Robinson Cano yesterday in the HR Derby. He looked like his dog died. Poor kid. And if that's something Steinbrenner would have been angry about, it just reinforces my image of him as a giant douche canoe. Cano was obviously trying, probably too hard.

And I'm not usually into blondes, but thank god for Jennie Finch, or that All-Star Softball game would have been useful only as a sleep aid. :D

I was kinda kidding around a bit (but you had absolutely no way of knowing that).

With all seriousness, the Yanks are only doing what anyone else would do (taking advantage of a large market and a salary cap that is too high). Nothing wrong with that.

What did you think of the display at the HR Derby last night? People on ESPN Radio were talking about it all day.

Honestly, I find the HR Derby to be a complete bore. Not sure why, I love the longball (it's true what they say), it's just too long I guess. And while there are a myriad of reasons I'm loyal to Chris Berman, his "back back back back back back GONE!" calls make me bonkers after 5 seconds.

Like I said, felt bad for Cano. Prince is a beast. Otherwise, I wouldn't have watched if I wasn't making dinner with nothing else to watch.

I wouldn't have watched it at home, but I was working out of town, so I took in the Derby and a few beers.

Berman drives me crazy with that too.

I hope Kansas City doesn't even get a whiff of hosting another All Star game and enters a World Series drought worse than the Cubs. It's one thing to boo Cano, but they went as far to harass his family.

I'm sure you also hope that the Yankees never host another All Star game and enter a 103 year World Series drought, right?

Well, she deserved it. ;)

Kidding, of course. The truth is that there are obnoxious, annoying fans everywhere. What was ridiculous about Kansas City is if they truly care so much about their team and players, why don't they show more support during the season? They're 24th out of 30 teams in attendance this year. Just seemed a little hypocritical.

And come on - how many Yankees were in the Home Run derby in 2008? The whole thing is just silly.

True there are always obnoxious fans for every team. But, two nights of a packed stadium harassing Cano and then the idiots who harassed his family has hurt Kansas City fans reputation. IMHO.

So, are you agreeing that NY should never host an All-Star game, should enter a long World Series drought, and their fans' reputation is hurt?

I just find it amusing that Yankee fans, known for being some of the most obnoxious fans in all of sports, are complaining about the treatment Cano got. Cano makes more money a year than most of us will see our entire lives, he can handle a little booing. If the media covered every time an opposing player got booed at Yankee Stadium, that's all they would be covering. And as far as his family goes, it's unfortunate, but I think Mrs. Cliff Lee wishes she just had some fans yelling at her.

Cano seemed to handle it fine the night of the Home Run Derby. Booing or heckling the players is one thing, but attacking their family is something else. That is beyond low class. It is sad that all cities seem to have their share of scumbags that were never taught how to behave.

That was my anger speaking when I said that. The situation with Cano the past two days has made me displeased. And of course whenever there is a story of Yankees fans being jerks, etc it hurts our reputation.

The booing towards Cano wasn't simply a typical friendly, " he is a Yankee so lets boo him" boo. When the Yankees are at Fenway, Jeter gets booed, but we all know it is a friendly boo and they boo for the sake of the rivalry. We know that they still respect Jeter, etc. In 2005, Fenway cheered Mo because of his blown saves in the '04 collapse. Those examples are the typical friendly response to a Yankee.

Kansas City booing wasn't friendly. If they booed when he was announced, fine whatever. But, again it went far beyond that. It was disgusting. There was some malicious intent in those boos. And the harassing of the family was despicable.

Agreed, harassing the family is a bad thing.

Malicious intent in booing. Pray tell, how in the world do you know that? Your post is just typical of a sports fans down playing an event when they do it, but hyping it when some one else does it. Much like the current Republicans and Democrats.

Lucky for you the downvote button has been removed. You'd get about a thousand of them for such a ridiculous post.

Maybe malicious was the wrong word. But, you get my point in that it wasn't a typical friendly booing. They cheered whenever he made an out. When money to charity is involved, that is classless. The constant booing was also unnecessary. Boo him when he is announced and then shut up. Again, it wasn't a typical booing.

And I don't like the fact that Arizona fans booed Prince Fielder last year for not choosing Upton for the Derby team.

Good thing I missed the game last night, I hear it sucked. How many Red Sox players were on the team? Sounds like they played the whole injured staff.:p

I wonder what Selig does next year to get people to watch, as it seems the players didn't care about the game.

Hey MacNut, bite my ass.

Anyway, looking forward to the second half. Thanks to the second wild card, the Red Sox still have a pulse. With Ellsbury, Crawford, Buchholz and others returning, hopefully we can get this thing turned around.

Anyone know offhand when the trading deadline is this year?

Isn't it always July 31st?

So the Yankees have roughly 2 1/2 weeks to work out that deal for Lester. :p
